Those are some pretty insane (ly unreasonable) expectations for a return in a Stepan trade.

But trading him for 2 prospects and a pick (the later of their 2) is reasonable?

I don't know why the RoR trade was used as a comparable (and even he brought back 2 NHL players, as flawed as they may be) when the situations weren't remotely close to the same.

I've said this at least 3 times and I swear this is the last time I'll say it: If Stepan is moved you are going to be very surprised by what he returns.

Just put it this way: if Brassard can return Mika Zibanejad and a 2nd, why wouldn't Stepan bring back more in a trade when he's better and younger than Brassard?

Stepan for Faulk was laughed out of the building on the trade board. It's a trade that makes no sense for Carolina, them trading Hanifin is far more likely given Slavin breakout and Bean not too far away.

And I just don't see us getting ALL of that from ARI. If we get Dvorak, it would be the 23rd instead of the 7th OA and no way we'd be getting Wood as well.

But apparently Zona has soured on Wood from what bobbopp says, I thought he was pretty well regarded and was considered to be one of the better players in the AHL last season.

Exactly. Hence why I think if the Rangers go with unproven pieces like Strome and the 7th pick, the Yotes will have to give up a bigger package. They're not going to hedge their bets on one or the other.

I really doubt that every good player left available is going to have a deal cut for them.

LV wants to be somewhat competitive next season not a 25 win team.

between the players available and ufas that can be signed, they could put together a respectable team...but is that really a smart move? stockpiling a ton of draft picks and finishing last for a few years might be the fastest way to build a winning franchise

Praying they don't take Raanta. Can't belive some people want him taken. He is our trade bait and you want to lose him?? Grabner holds no value and you are kidding yourself if you think he scores 20+ goals again next season. What did he have 5 goals the last 42 games or something?

But ZomG BREAKAWAYS!

Grabner is definitely the player I hope we lose the most of the potential 4. But I'd rather lose Raanta over Lindberg and Fast.

Our offensive depth is the one thing we have going for us. Losing one would be a big vlow.

Raanta only value is to increase the return we would get from Zona in the Stepan trade.

And, Jordan Staal got Sutter, Dumoulin and the 8th pick from Carolina, WHEN Shero had TWO trade partners - Carolina and NY. Gorton supposedly has many teams listening. He has the leverage.

In a nonhockey market like LV and a pro football team coming in a couple of years that might not be the best idea.

I'm also not saying they should cut refusing cutting any deals just not with every team.

If McPhee decided to play hardball with a couple of teams (I.e. Minnesota, Anaheim, Islanders) I could easily see a Stepan to VGK trade.

If Vegas does get a few #1's, such as the Isle pick, could you see McPhee parting with the 6th pick in a package for Stepan?

Staal was perceived as better and way younger than Stepan at the time of that trade.

I was happy with his play even after the scoring dried up. Should be on the 4th line. Raanta is easier to replace than Grabner's speed.

I could see LV having 4 first round picks this year.

Plus still end up with a good player from those teams.

If I'm LV I say pick the player you value the most and we won't pick him.

I'd be surprised to see the Knights trade their first ever draft pick, but stranger things have happened.

I'm confident that Gorton is going to get really strong value from Stepan. There's no reason to trade him otherwise. Fans of other teams are somehow sold that he's getting pushed out by the team because he's damaged goods, when in reality he's just the most valuable piece we can realistically trade.

Younger for sure but better? Doubt it, the thought was that he was being buried behind Crosby and Malkin and there was more offense in him. More potential sure, but definitely not better.

Not to mention that trading him came with a super long 10 year contract extension with a cap hit similar to what Stepan carries now, except it ate up even more of the cap back when he signed it.

Two years younger = WAY younger. And, again, Shero has two trade partners. That limits the value he gets. Gorton doesn't have that issue.

Just stop.

I mean I'm not going to lie just because I'm a Rangers fan. Staal had a huge hand in helping the Penguins win the Cup in '09, was better defensively than Stepan is now, scored at a pretty similiar rate and that was despite playing behind the two best centers in the world.

And he was 4 years younger.
