How are the Ducks going to gain assets for Vatanen?

As far as I'm aware, it looks more like Anaheim is going to send a piece to Vegas to make sure they select Vatanen and not Manson...

Trading Vatanen to Vegas first means that Vegas gets two players out of it. Could work either way, though.

I'm glad to see ARI taking initiative here to compete.

NHL can't afford a Sam Hinkie, PHI type of situation.

For those not familar with the situation, league ownership in the NBA got involved because of Sam Hinkie tanking in Philly and ruining a big market. It messed up their revenue sharing and cost the rich teams greatly. There were a series of meetings held to get Hinkie out of power.

I thought Chayka was going down the same road from last off-season but ARI just had a shake-up.

Intentionally tanking is frowned upon by owners because it affects HRR right away with low season ticket sales.

If they protect Bjugstad over Marchesseault/Smith then they're just dumb and someone should get fired.

Why he's a good player was just hurt . They can only lose 1 player and Demers is my guess

Smith makes too much. March is the cheapest option but will he continue this production ?

At least we're guaranteed some roster changes with the actual expansion draft. I wonder if we can poach a defenseman by getting LV to select a player and then trade to us.

A funny rumor is that CBJ apparently plans on protecting Jack Johnson over Ryan Murray, if this is true then Kekelinen should be fired on the spot.

I don't even think Murray is that great but losing him for JACK JOHNSON?!

Hey, watch it. That's World Cup of Hockey American Defenseman Jack Johnson you're talking about. The same WCOH team coached by Torts. That's likely the reason. Murray's usage has been 3rd pairing while Johnson has Torts's confidence.

It seems Vegas could get some pretty solid D.. Wonder if w could make a trade with them post expansion..

Take all of the exposed players with a grain of salt. We can ridicule other GMs once Vegas makes their official selections, but if George McPhee made a handshake agreement with a team, he'll honor it.

(*Disclaimer: I'd be lying if part of me wishes GMGM would be ruthless and double-crossed teams)

One note that did come out earlier, Nashville has been unable to reach a deal with Las Vegas. If McPhee is going to be heartless when dealing with one team, it should be the one that gave him Martin Erat.

If anyone hasn't heard it, here's the interesting bits from the Chayka conference call about Smith:

- Talks about how freeing up cap space and how it's an asset for them.
- Speaks to how that cap space can be used to build a team that supports their youth and doesn't make the kids play over their heads.
- Move wasn't made in isolation. Was made to set up other moves.
- Repeated that Smith's contract hindered his ability to build a team around the youth.
- Hopeful to find center icemen and right shots.
- Had some "advanced discussions" before trade freeze.
- Thinks expansion will free up some goaltenders to be had

Full audio.

So obviously they want to bring in some veterans to shield the youth and talked about using their "assets" to get those players. Any veterans we know who are right-handed shots and play the pivot? Doesn't hurt that Stepan makes $6m, $5m, and $5m on the last 3 years of his deal. Kinda looks good to a budget team.

After the Smith deal they have $30M in cap space. Yikes.

I like that Gorton is holding firm on his price for Stepan. It may be that a deal doesn't happen until after July 1st (if it happens at all), when presumably Stepan's signing bonus would be paid and, obviously, any picks would be 2018 or later.

I'm a little surprised we haven't heard anything about Nash, but it's still early yet. The teams that will want him probably don't have an expansion slot open. I expect we'll start hearing his name after the ED is over.

Stepan's NMC kicks in july 1.

I would take the lack of talk as a sign something happens the way Gorton is tight lipped.

I was never sold on all these big moves happening now. It'll go down after ED as teams will know where they are at.

The more important number is the $13m under the cap floor. 7 players to sign to get to 23.

It's weird for chayka to do a soundbyte that on the nose. It basically says, hey Gorton, we really want stepan.

Maybe the deal is done, just waiting to see who gets claimed so you can fine tune the deal to needs?

I know this probably isn't the most popular thought, but I'd take duclair back. His value is low, could be a good value pick up. But I don't do a Stepan deal there without dvorak or strome coming back (with duclair plus a pick). If Raanta is included I want domi. Maybe it's terrible value for one side or the other, I'm not a gm obviously.

Who finishes hire in the standings next season, vegas or the isles .. looks like vegas is gunna be able to put out great bottom six with some young guys getting too 6 minutes and maybe sign some snipers with a goalie like MAF and a solid back up they'll be an issue. Not playoffs but I bet they're more completitive then 80% of the teams in the NBA
