Maybe Arizona is more open to parting with a center prospect than their fans are. Supposedly the Rangers interviewed Makar at the combine. Perhaps that #7 pick is in play to get him?

I'd do Stepan, Raanta, and #21 for Strome, #7 and #35.

They interviewed Makar and Suzuki. That was the only piece I think the beat writers uncovered about the combine for the Rangers. That came from Zipay.

Love both of those players however if #7, I like Middlestadt better. But, he might be gone at that point.

The teams in the East and their 1c:

PIT: Crosby
WSH: Backstrom
CBJ: Wennberg as a 22 year old in his 2nd season outscored Stepan's career best point total
NYI: Tavares
NJD: Stepan is better than their 1C._ for now
CAR: Stepan is better than Rask
PHI: Giroux

BOS: Bergeron
BUF: Eichel
DET: Stepan is better than Larkin.. for now
FLA: Barkov
MTL: Galchenyuk break out is coming and it seems most non-NYR fans take him over Stepan
OTT: Turris
TBL: Stamkos
TOR: Matthews

There, I broke it down for you myself. There is one team in the entire East that I take Stepan over their 1c.

Factoring in two-play, right now Stepan is better than Wennberg, Galchenyuk and Turris. Stepan has also beat Backstrom in multiple playoff series (scored the winning goal in Game 7 in 2015), as well as outplayed Giroux in the first round in 2014. Rangers went against Crosby/Malkin in consecutive postseasons and eliminated them with Stepan as their 1C. There are players on that list objectively way more physically gifted than Stepan, but what Stepan lacks in raw talent, he makes up for in hockey IQ. There's a reason the Rangers transformed from borderline playoff contender into consistent playoff contender since Stepan arrived. No coincidence. You're entitled to your opinion, though, but I respectfully disagree.

So just so we're all clear...
I doubt Arizona ends up getting stepan. Clear posturing by JG.
As we've all come to realizec, a deal with Arizona would likely mean futures. This knowledge may convince more teams (who can only provide futures) to get in on the bidding and raise Steps trade value.

Food for thought...

What's McDonagh thinking if the Rangers trade his buddy Stepan after they bought out his mentor Dan Girardi? Business is business but losing two of his best friends on the team won't be easy for him.

That's the thing, if there are multiple teams involved, a bidding war could happen.

If the Rangers do go with a full on rebuild, you have to think Hank would accept a trade to a contender to try and win a cup. Money retained, he would still command a hefty return. Dallas? Edmonton?

trade him to Edmonton for a haul so they can compete with Pittsburgh for the cup.

Dallas isn't close to a contender and Edmonton can't afford him even at 50% retained.

If Stepan goes for a futures type deal, I think we should definitely be looking to rebuild. No point in signing FA or keeping Zucc/McDonagh/Nash who have 1 and 2 years left on their deals.

Depends on what futures you get. I think Dvorak gives you 75-80% of Stepan next year. Extra assets help facilitate other moves and open up salary cap flexibility. One way or the other, Nash will be off the books in 2018. God knows, I'm not a rebuild guy but there's a chance he Ranges get enough out of this to stay very competitive.

That's fair. I was talking about draft picks and prospects . If we can get Dvorak+ that's a bit different.

Dallas has Bishop. Edmonton has Talbot. I have a hard time seeing Henrik moving his family to the middle of Canada.

Arizona's trade chips at center aren't Ethan Wereks. A downgrade at the center position, upgrades on D, Hayes, Miler, Zib, Lindberg all moving toward the right direction + Skjei's great rookie year, buying out Girardi, we're at least 25% better than we were last year. This is hardly anything close to a rebuild.

Swap Dvorak for Strome and I'd be so in....

But I wonder what the Rangers could get if they moved Strome. Might be the answer for their #1 RD problem.

And as for Strome, he will never be a world class skater but my God, what mitts!

Filthy mits.

The skating doesn't bother me all that much because hes got that insane reach, but his motor (or lack there of) really worries me.

He was so dominant when he wanted to be in junior.
