The wordsmith stands corrected. This ^, exactly.This. It's not about the better player but the better asset. Larkin is the better asset.
The word is 'contingency'.Rangers felt the need to buy Girardi out before the expansion draft. Are they actually planning on making a move for a Dman or are they protecting someone else? If they bought out Girardi to protect Holden I will lose it.
no, but he's a RHD.. can he play the right side?

Concur, but it makes even more sense if SJ, which has nothing else to lose 'cause they don't have enough horses and have to hope to get lucky, their best interests are served by getting the band back together.Nash to SJS makes sense if Marleau and Thornton sign elsewhere. I'd like Lebanc and Bergman, we can retain to increase the return too.
It's a handful of players. Nash is one yr. Likely gives them the following season for half-ish of current pay.Nash and Thornton are buds but that's a short term fix so doubt they go that route
IDK if it would be Pionk, but whoever's in that spot and you've got 2 really good pairs and a potentially good third pair.
Its possible that they just wanted to get it out of the way ASAP.
I expect the Rangers to do nothing by the 3PM deadline tomorrow. I think they're entirely content allowing Raanta to be selected and keeping all of their forwards.
That is not good enough. They could surprise me w a balzy trade but I think theyTheir forwards are solid. No real studs but it's deepjust sign Smith and Shattenkirk.
Screw the Stepan successor scenario, it is not a priority. We're not moving Skjei under any circumstances unless someone offers us a gigantic over payment. Gorton is trying to move Stepan for an almost top pairing defenseman. That I think to Gorton is replacing a hard problem of finding a suitable top RHD with a difficult minus 1 problem of finding a successor to Stepan's role. We have Zib, Hayes, Miller, Lindberg to try and figure out who can take over which spot in a very telling year for all of them if we have to trade away Step without getting a 1/2C in the off season.
Right now though, it doesn't look like there are trading partners. I'd be happy to pluck an under 26 2nd pairing calibre defenseman from someone without trading Stepan or signing an under 30 2nd pairing defenseman someone in FA for 4-5 years.
Staal will be the next buy out in a minimum of 2 years.
Unfortunately it'll be 3, they have to get over that 3.6 cap hit year 3 for DG then it goes down to 1.1. Not impossible however to swallow both.
No clue how Brodin is a trade board darling, and Stepan is trash. Makes zero sense.

He won't. We don't have the cap room to be buying out all these players and wasting our cap. Dannys 2nd-3rd years are a 3M hit.
If anything he will somehow get traded.
If Vegas takes Lindberg or Grabner in the ED, we trade them Staal, Gropp and Raanta for our player back. It's a trade that makes sense for Vegas, they get two players for the price of one, one of the best goalies on the market and a fine prospect with some upside.
Of course Gorton would have to beg Staal to waive his no trade, but the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one, or whatever the saying is.
err yeah, so 3 years then.
maybe they can trade him before that.![]()
Brodin is a really good defensive dman. Has a lot of potential to add offense to his game and plays blth sides. He'd play well with McDonagh, but I don't want to trade Stepan for him.
