This. It's not about the better player but the better asset. Larkin is the better asset.
The wordsmith stands corrected. This ^, exactly.
thank you LC

Rangers felt the need to buy Girardi out before the expansion draft. Are they actually planning on making a move for a Dman or are they protecting someone else? If they bought out Girardi to protect Holden I will lose it.
The word is 'contingency'.
That said, I don't get it --- not that in this case I disagree or don't support the move; I just don't understand it.
We waited all this time so we could at last trade G.
At full pop, IMO, a 2nd and two 3rds would get the job done.
Later, Danny boy.

But we have kept Staal, who has the NMC and we cannot move w/o waivered consent.
Don't understand that.

Nash to SJS makes sense if Marleau and Thornton sign elsewhere. I'd like Lebanc and Bergman, we can retain to increase the return too.
Concur, but it makes even more sense if SJ, which has nothing else to lose 'cause they don't have enough horses and have to hope to get lucky, their best interests are served by getting the band back together.
JThor + Marleau not enough.
Adding Nash would make it closer, and you are only looking at the upcoming season, MAYBE, MAYBE also the following one as to commitment.

Nash and Thornton are buds but that's a short term fix so doubt they go that route
It's a handful of players. Nash is one yr. Likely gives them the following season for half-ish of current pay.
It's not like b'c of these 3 guys, a handful of can't miss prospects who are fully ready and knocking at the door would get stiffed.

IDK if it would be Pionk, but whoever's in that spot and you've got 2 really good pairs and a potentially good third pair.

providing AV keeps Staal on the 3rd pair in minimal minutes and maybe some PK time, the defense could be vastly improved more so than anyone ever thought possible this season.

Its possible that they just wanted to get it out of the way ASAP.

I expect the Rangers to do nothing by the 3PM deadline tomorrow. I think they're entirely content allowing Raanta to be selected and keeping all of their forwards.

Definitely. I'm sure they arrived at the G decision independently, and then there was no reason to not just get it done.

Maybe a team with protection issues gets desperate. Worst case you just protect Holden.

They could surprise me w a balzy trade but I think they
just sign Smith and Shattenkirk.
Their forwards are solid. No real studs but it's deep
That is not good enough.
Regardless of how competitive we are.
We are certainly a good team.
But we are NOT
THAT LEVEL of good.
We need to build
improve total quantity and quality of assets.

We're not moving Skjei under any circumstances unless someone offers us a gigantic over payment. Gorton is trying to move Stepan for an almost top pairing defenseman. That I think to Gorton is replacing a hard problem of finding a suitable top RHD with a difficult minus 1 problem of finding a successor to Stepan's role. We have Zib, Hayes, Miller, Lindberg to try and figure out who can take over which spot in a very telling year for all of them if we have to trade away Step without getting a 1/2C in the off season.

Right now though, it doesn't look like there are trading partners. I'd be happy to pluck an under 26 2nd pairing calibre defenseman from someone without trading Stepan or signing an under 30 2nd pairing defenseman someone in FA for 4-5 years.
Screw the Stepan successor scenario, it is not a priority.
Gorton, avoid the trap Slats fell into, overplaying Talbot.

More commentary in next post, but main point is to just make a good deal; the level of interest will prompt competition to make it worthwhile.
Don't ef it up trying for a perfect single deal that kills 7 birds with 2 stones.

He won't. We don't have the cap room to be buying out all these players and wasting our cap. Dannys 2nd-3rd years are a 3M hit.

If anything he will somehow get traded.

If Vegas takes Lindberg or Grabner in the ED, we trade them Staal, Gropp and Raanta for our player back. It's a trade that makes sense for Vegas, they get two players for the price of one, one of the best goalies on the market and a fine prospect with some upside.

Of course Gorton would have to beg Staal to waive his no trade, but the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one, or whatever the saying is.

I don't think teams are allowed to trade for a player they lose in the expansion draft for a full year

There was some indication, I believe that AZ was a close deal last yr, and is in the running now. Hopefully it is a matter of pieces.

I have prop'ed
21OA + Raanta for Flames 1st [=16OA]
and then
flip 16OA + Stepan for 7OA + Chychrun

I would welcome comment on what could be dine to finalize this deal. Stepan is not worth 3OA as some have insisted, and later in the top 10 has different values to different teams. And Chychrun is held in high, high regard.

But I believe a win win is possible here.

For starters, since there is a temporary bit of leeway w/cap for a few days, let's deal Raanta + 21 directly to AZ. If 'yotes are thinking about Smith to Flames, this let's AZ corner the market and gives them option to keep Raanta if they want to take less for Smith.

Let's add Panther 4th we have this year as a sweetener.
And then also Sergey Zborovskiy, our well regarded RD prospect
they can add a 3rd for next year or similar.

Would that be enough?

Brodin is a really good defensive dman. Has a lot of potential to add offense to his game and plays blth sides. He'd play well with McDonagh, but I don't want to trade Stepan for him.

If we re-sign Smith, there is no point in having Brodin. They are the same.

Think I have solved the expansion draft problem
