Looking at the 2016 draft and the az speculation. Were they hoping that dubios or puljujarvi dropped? Tkachuk could have been the target. If someone valued the Nylander name or jumped on sergachev maybe they drop to 7.

I would guess it had to do with Stamkos hitting FA.

Is there an advantage of any kind to keeping Girardi for the expansion draft and not buying him out ASAP for that protection slot and the cap space?

Rangers felt the need to buy Girardi out before the expansion draft. Are they actually planning on making a move for a Dman or are they protecting someone else? If they bought out Girardi to protect Holden I will lose it.

If they don't make a trade by the deadline i could see them inking Smith and protecting him. Just get it over with and keep him from driving the price up after a slew of rhd are taken.

Lol why ? Girardi out leaves Money for Smith

You may lose it when they deal Nash to sign Shattenkirk lol

Wonder if teams are just content losing a guy instead of trying to orchestrate a deal and then still lose a guy regardless.

I think that's part of it but Vegas is also going to pick a lesser player and then draft day have like 5 deals of picks for futures , aka nothing .

Thinking out loud - and I absolutely do NOT want to trade Skjei - but, based on the situations for the ED, what are thoughts on this if the + is significant enough?

Brodin +
for
Skjei

You have a rookie defenseman who with third pairing minutes almost quietly and nonchalantly puts up 39 points. Skjei is a defense first defenseman with a lot of untapped offensive potential. He has size and some physical edge and is a wonderful skater.

I'd argue Skjei is our most valuable commodity today. He could be a big star and better perhaps than McDonagh. What would the Wild have to give up for him? A hell of a lot more than Brodin. The Rangers have a gem in Skjei. To me if there is an untouchable on the Rangers--he is it.

I have this sick to my stomach feeling if the Rangers move Stepan for defense, they're gonna try to replace him with Thornton... hope that's not the case.

Yep, Skjei expansion exempt, RFA still for 2 to 3 more years, and as good as he played this year? the price would be huge to move him.

Yes, Skjei is our most valuable asset, and probably will be viewed as the best player on the team if he continues to develop by the end of the next season.

They could surprise me w a balzy trade but I think they just sign Smith and Shattenkirk.

Their forwards are solid. No real studs but it's deep

Forwards aren't "elite" but the sum of the group could be considered that. 4th in goal scoring last year I think it was.. 22 goals against the Sens which is more than PIttsburgh scored.

Shattenkirk over Girardi is a mega upgrade and Smith/SKjei was an excellent pairing.

Our defense will already better with the sheer ammount of youth fighting for those third pair minutes.
If we sign Shatty I imagine Staal drops to 3s. In that case you've got 3 decent pairs. Nothing particularly Excellent but a significant improvement

It feels like general managers aren't being as creative with their roster issues as before and there's much more emphasis on asset management.
