The thing about the Carter deal is that you had the whispers about both Carter and Richsrds off the ice. Those deals were not done with the whole league knowing that either player was available.

Stepan has no restrictions on his market.

Yes, this. And where are the coyotes getting their right hand center? Their market is so limited. They have trouble getting ufa. The number of right hand top 2 centers is sparse. Step's contract is so much more reasonable than Carter's. Cap is higher than the amount owed.

The return on these guys is part skill and part circumstances.

I think the craziest thing if a trade went down similar to your or my proposals it would be the first time the Rangers had 3 picks in the first 35 selections in God knows how long.

Can you imagine if we don't give up our first and add 2 more? It would be the first time ever the Rangers have 3(!) picks in the first round

Here's something else...the Rangers interviewed Nick Suzuki at the combine. He might be a reach at 7, so would they then trade down, add another 2nd and then take Suzuki?

Adding picks should be the name of the game this offseason in general. They have an opportunity to add a couple of nice pieces for no more assets than cash in Shattenkirk and Smith.

Honestly, I'd be pretty upset if that was the package for Stepan

I hope that's not the deal. Gorton would disappoint me greatly.

I'm pretty squarely in the camp that Stepan isn't quite as valuable as most of this board thinks he is. There's risk in that package, but a considerable reward if things work out. A top line center, top-six winger, and potentially a top defensemen at #7. Guess it really depends on the plan for the next couple of years for Gorton.

I'd love Dvorak, but I just don't see the incentive for the Coyotes to trade a NHL ready center for Stepan. Particularly when that player could produce at a similar rate next year.

We'll pull a Boston and take Rasmussen, Poehling, and some dude ranked in the third round over Glass, Brannstrom, and Suzuki

My god. Can you imagine that? If we somehow end up with 7, 21 and 23 I want Liljegren, Brannstrom and Yamamoto

Larry was wrong about the cap.

Look I get it Brooksie, you've reversed engineered fan sentiment into your articles the last couple of years, and it's a prime reason why (outside of good writing sir) why you're the last beat writer in a world of bloggers when it comes to the NYR.

But you should now by now, that the brotherhood that exists among pro athletes always entails getting more money and bigger contracts.

It's a big reason why guys will step up for a Mike Conley Jr and his huge deal, even if the player isn't worth that much. Same theorem applies to the PA agreeing to the escalator.

They measure this from season ticket sales early in the year. That's when you'll know if the cap will go up or not.

This is fair, but I suppose it depends on how they really feel about Strome.

That said, I can't see Duclair coming back to NY. There were enough rumblings that the front office wasn't all too broken up about moving him for Yandle for me to believe that there was some validity behind it. His value has only gone down since then.

Especially if they swap 1sts.

I don't see the Rangers taking back Duclair, since he's done nothing to quell the whispers that went with him out of town. And, a player of Stepan accomplishments has traditionally garnered three assets on the trade markets. Unlike other examples, there are no extennuating circumstances regarding Stepan. He should bring back the 7th pick, and probably Strome and Hickey. I'm not asking for Keller or Chychrun. But, the Rangers have no reason to add the 21st pick to the deal. I could see maybe adding a 5th the other way.

I think after all of the busted players that they've had to deal with, they'd probably rather keep the guy who has shown he can do something at the NHL level. I think Strome has a bit more upside, but is more of a risk.

I don't remember reading anything about Duclair, but who knows? It's a buy low opportunity to add more speed on the wings. Speed that scored 20 goals a season ago.

I think those other players who were dealt had something going for them that Stepan doesn't, and that's the allure of potential. ROR had potential to be more than he'd shown. Staal was thought to be a 60 point shutdown C just waiting for the opportunity. I don't think any team is expecting more from Stepan than what he's shown he can do.

I'm pretty meh regarding Hickey, but that's just me.

There's also the element of cap to consider. How much value does the organization see in gaining that flexibility? Far from a cap dump, but it could be useful to them.

And Stepan may have a different allure - veteran presence on a young and growing hockey team. That also has value, since a player like that doesn't usually become available to a team like Arizona.
