You mean to tell me paying top dollar for #1 goaltenders doesnt win you cups?

This absolutely the most bizarre and wild takes regarding Hank and his contract. Bizarre. All in hindsight.

**** man i wish we had a crystal ball for every single move we made. Contract signings to waiver pickups. But hey CAM ****ING TALBOT...he wouldve projected much better and won us a cup for pennies on the dollar. And he also would have signed a team friendly contract...

Girardi, Staal...all of them should have signed team friendly contracts and left money on the table because they love NY so much.

Bizarre

"In the salary cap era Stanley Cup winning goalies earn, on average, 4.77% of the cap. No goalie has earned more than 9.07% of the total salary cap" . Jonathon Quick was the highest at 5.8 mill.

I want nylander...I want us to expand the trade to get him... Georgiev fasth and buch for nylander?
I just dont know if that gets it done. If Buch had built off his hot start then yea. But he has been mediocre imo. And it certainly wouldnt be a now trade. Nylander has been good for them. Thus Fast probably isnt in the discussion.

There are 2 very legit argument to be made Regarding passing on hall.

1 is his injury history and his general age.

2 is the contract he will command.

Being a winner or a loser is silly. It's the same argument ppl used against me when I wanted Marian hossa and Phil Kessel on this team.

Hall is good, but I would — never — vote on him in a MVP race because he doesn’t even remotely make players around him better like Panarin does, if anything he supports his teammates less than most other top guys do with the way he plays.

I have no interest in him against the background of what he would cost. JMHO, others obviously feel differently about him, but not my cup of tea.

There's a rumor out of Toronto that Dubas is getting desperate and is going to pull the trigger on Kapanen and Bracco for Georgiev. No picks. Take it for what its worth but Georgiev being pulled against a team he's performed well against and Bracco being scratched is something to note. Wouldn't surprise me if something is brewing. Have to think that Toronto is starting to panic.
I dont think that is a legit rumor but i can see the panic starting to set in.

*RANT INCOMING* BOOM!
1. Some players who are stars never find team success, there are countless examples . *ahem* eichel, hall ahem*
2. Taylor hall had to carry the most crappy system driven and constructed team out of that season (of those whi made the playoffs), only to get obliterated by a more complete team.
3. You pay your best players, overpay if necessary. Yes, it sometimes doesnt work out and you better have a good age regression model, but that money is better spent than overpaying on complimentary players.
4. Taylor hall had a major surgery/injury last year. Thats why i wouldnt sign him. Its his injury history that makes you worry, as well as his defensive play.
5. Kessel can only be listed as a failure to be a current top line player. The depth crosby and malkin created is insane.
6. The bracco + for georgiev is initially what people were ecstatic about. Yes, we need shooters but either way, we'd be resolving a problem for our goaltending situation.
7. For the argument against carrying three, hank got signed for the right deal at the time. He carried us for a couple more seasons, but the deal was made so thats it ok if he sucks at the end, they hoped theyd win a cup by then. They didnt.
8. The reason that toronto has not traded for georgiev was the upcoming expansion draft. They can only protect one and i have a feeling they thought freddie would be it for a while. However, with pressure to be in a city like toronto, dubas may pull the trigger earlier to try to save their po chances. Tor needs that revenue.
9. Does no one talk about the fact that the leafs are crazy young? They will be good for years.
10. The only rule i would have with contracts is defensive d who use their bodies frequently do not get long term contracts; they usually dont age well.
11. I miss the playoffs :(

Bracco has basically told the Leafs “call me when I’m traded”

I have a feeling he may be included if the Leafs trade for Georgiev, but he won’t be the main piece

I know this is probably a controversial take, but I think this hearkens back to something that's been discussed over the years on here - the belief that it's easier to win with a great team and an above average goalie, than it is to win with an above average team and a great goalie.

A few thoughts.

1. What we do now is from Gorton’s POV surely interconnected with what we do at the draft and all the way up to October 2020.

What is Gorton’s plan for next season?
a. Is he fine with going into next season with a roster that might be a little worse than this season’s roster?
b. Does he want the team to start being able to challenge for a PO spot next season?

Listening especially to what JD have said, it seems like they are a little afraid of 2. If the roster next season is weaker than this season’s roster, we could be out of it really fast (or hang in there longer, small marginals). I can understand the concern for being out of the POs again by Nov 1, 2020. Buffalo still sucks, once you have sucked for a long time it’s not easy to turn it around.

It’s hard to know for sure what their plans are.

2. If they want to be at least as strong next season as we were going into this season, or even a bit stronger — how do they plan for that?

Again, I think there are two, maybe three options.
a. You can opt to — not — sell-off valuable assets this deadline and resign UFAs to be.
b. You can opt to sell-off all valuable assets this deadline, and use some of the assets you gather and especially available cap room to make moves this summer. Kind of like NJD tried to do buying low on Subban, Gusev and Simmonds, Colorado tried to do with Kadri, Burakovsky and co, and so forth.
c. Would more specifically be to trade Kreider now and then try to sign him as a UFA.

3. I am perfectly fine with b. above and I think Gorton is excellent and making stuff happen. It’s the best way to utilize his ability and it should be doable looking at previous moves.

BUT, cap space is a big issue. Gorton could end up icing a very weak team next season unless he can clear cap space to operate before next season.

For me there is two alternatives; either we can get rid of Hank, or we can trade Brady Skjei. I just don’t buy that we can trade Hank. I think that boat sailed many years ago. I don’t think Hank has been consistent and I think the contenders just don’t see the upside in him vs the cost. But he could retire.

I don’t mind trading Skjei and think that is the right thing to do no matter what.

I'm griping about us always paying top dollar when we shouldnt have to. It happens all the time here, Girardi, Staal, Lundqvist, Trouba, etc. None of those guys wanted to leave, none. Total what we overpaid on all of those and it's not chump change and it definitely affected our teams ability to compete.

Go blame the governor for the absurd state income tax

As long as Bracco isn’t the centerpiece. I am not high on him. I think his ceiling a solid 3rd liner who was able to put up very good numbers in the AHL but does not completely translate to the NHL. And there is nothing wrong with having that on your 3rd line if you need his player type to fill out your team. Unfortunately he isn’t what we are looking for on the 3rd and 4th line, or even the whole roster in general, which is a north-south player that goes to the net and isn’t worried about physical contact.

Braco is more of a perimeter playmaker type. So if they want to add him to the deal with the slight chance he booms to be a 2nd liner fine. But he isnt who I trade Georgiev for.

Kapanen is a 3rd line player. Maybe a 2nd line player on a team of less talent and depth. But the Toronto fan base will act as if he is untouchable, he is gold. All their players are.

Before Hall got there ARI scored 2.1 goals/60. 3rd last.

Since Hall got there ARI has scored 2.55 goals/60.

Going backwards?

i never watch Arizona but does he put up points like Strome does? Where he’s a liability half the time?

It's been said before but I think if the Rangers were interested in Bracco as the main piece, the trade would have been done by now

So I wouldn't worry too much about that aspect

My hot take of the day.

Bracco is going to make a fine line mate with Spooner over in Europe a few years from now.

Colossal waste of an asset if he is all we get out of Georgiev.

Bracco - Spooner, Spooner -Bracco. Same turd, different punch bowl.

I'm officially sick of this three goalie thing. It's ridiculous for all players involved. Do something.

don't disagree but you don't make a bad deal to dump georgiev cause people are sick of this three goalie thing lol

Not interested in throwing Hajek into a deal to bring back a player we aren't even really sure we want in Kapanen.

If anything I'm leaning towards telling Toronto no thanks. Not sure they have what I want.

I'd rather package Georgiev with something else outgoing - say, Buch or Kreider - for an increased return on that deal.
