Buch's numbers are always a little wonky because his games played totals have been all over the place.

If we go by an 82 game schedule, Buch numbers are:

16 goals, 40 points
16 goals, 48 points
27 goals, 49 points
14 goals, 44 points

So over four seasons, Buch's 82 game average is roughly 18 goals and 45 points. So he's a level just below 20g/50pts.

The question is whether Buch, as he approaches his 25th birthday this spring, is capable of taking that next, permanent step to the 20/50 plateau, or what his value is to a team that thinks he can hit that level, and/or get a boost if paired with the right line-driver.

Too bad that value wasn't the 8th overall pick of the 2019 draft.

so all but 1 cup team has 3+ 50 point forwards and your conclusion is to agree with the guy that says 50 point forwards are useless?

If were measuring goal scoring LW's he would currently be 18th. Compare him in goal scoring to RW's of the league he would be Tied for 11th through 14.

Buch has one more year after this on his contract at $3.25 mil. He'll be an RFA again but one year away from being UFA. If we hang on to him and unless next year he takes that step I would not go very much over $4 mil and I wouldn't give him more than 4 years. A 45 point 2nd line is a good player but also kind of an average 2nd liner. So if we're hanging on to him and signing him again that's what I'd be looking at.

But I also think the shine has come off of him to a degree in all this waiting for him to take that next step and I don't think it's just the fans I think the Rangers brass are kind of looking at him that way too. 'Good player but he is what he is'. To me if he helps you get a younger player (such as Greenway) who has potential to put up the same kind of offense or somewhere thereabouts and brings other elements and is cheaper then it's an idea to consider. I don't think Minnesota would do that but that's an example.

I don't see Buch ever becoming a legit 1st line player and that makes him very tradeable in my eyes if the right deal comes along. Our untouchable forwards are Panarin, Zibanejad and Kakko and after them come Chytil (who IMO has Zibanejad upside) and Lemieux (who is an identity player). Every other forward I don't really have a big issue with moving.

My gut tells me he's moved for a different type of player --- especially if Kravtsov slides into a second line role sooner rather than later.

The question is the value of said player. It might be hard to get a 20 goal/50 point power forward for Buch, but can you find a 15-20 goal/ 40 point type to add to your lineup?

I could see the Rangers trying to find a Troy Brouwer type, maybe a Bryan Bickell type.

You might have a guy who pops in a few less goals, maybe less points, but brings other things to the lineup. I think that's where the focus might be heading as we look a little further out.

Supposedly the Rangers were close --- talking to them right up until the last minute.

I think Edmonton would still be a great fit for Buch, just not sure there's enough there the Rangers would consider.

Brouwer just cleared waivers

Correction that prior to this season 127 PTS in 227 GP . Not as great but still decent production . Def a player that with his skill set should score more

Just for fun i went back to the 2015 season and averaged goal totals from LW's from then till current 2019/2020 season. #20 who is consistently labeled as "Mr Inconsistent", is about as Consistent as you are going to get. He's 14th on the list of goal scorers through that span, in less games then all but 4 of the players mentioned.

1) Ovechkin 373GP 217 G
2) Marchand 355GP 167 G
3) Benn 368GP 144 G
4) Panarin 369GP 142 G
5) Skinner 364GP 140 G
6) Forsberg 337GP 143 G
7) Lee 374GP 133 G
8) Hoffman 365 GP 131 G
9) Kane 336 GP 126 G
10) Paciorety 345 GP 125 G
11) Gaudreau 363 GP 121 G
12) Van Reimsdyk 319 GP 120 G
13) Rackell 332 GP 117 G
14) Kreider 339 GP 110 G

1st line LW all day long!

And as recently as a year ago people were asking if we should build more in the mold of Winnipeg

Sakic is a much better GM than Cheveldayoff though. MUCH better. Cheveldayoff is a guy who fell ass backwards into a wealth of assets and did nothing with it. Sakic is a guy who also inherited some great assets but has made his team much better.

Going to be interesting to see how this deadline unfolds.

If Colorado was half decent at drafting the last decade, they would have been legitimate contenders the last few years.

I would say Buchnevich would be an excellent fit in Edmonton.

Power Play Unit #2
Gagner Haas Chaisson

There's plenty of room on the roster for a 40 point winger like Buch. That said, he frustrates the crap out of me so I wouldn't be sad if they move on from him.

The approaching traded deadline where hundreds of complex deals are mapped out, and then ~95% of trades materialize to where only players who are pending free agents or have a year left are actually moved for prospect and picks.

Don't put words in my mouth. I didn't say useless.

Buch is a SOLID 2nd line forward. Let's be honest, his job is to put up points. He has not done that at a rate of a first liner in recent years.

What I learned from this thread today:
  • Mostly nobody knows what player values are
  • This is an open forum
  • #1 and #2 lead me to #4
  • Friday cannot come here fast enough
