I’m all for patience and agree about Chytil getting more minutes. I think it’s time to move on from Strome though. He was trade bait before Covid yet kept, he played last season again, imo that’s enough. I think it’s time to move on.

I tend to agree. I would prefer a "mid-20s Brandon Dubinsky" type to play the 3rd line with Goodrow and Kreider, but there's nobody like that available. Danault is the closest thing as a defensive specialist. I'm fine with that option as well. Keeping Strome was my "if you don't want to trade or sign anyone" solution. We have three excellent centers. If the right move isn't available now, we don't need to rush anything. That was my gripe with the Buch move.

Question to me is, which contract is more likely to be a complete roster bomb 3 years from now. Eichel's risk is primarily medical; if he has serious career limiting health problems, there is a (good?) chance he could be LTIR bound and be manageable. Looking at the historical metric (WAR/xG) trend, injury history, and potential aging progression, Zibanejad IMO has a much higher likelihood of being a cap disaster.

I'd love to believe the NYR will be able to Tampa their way out of everything 3 years from now, but I'm skeptical for a variety of reasons.

Danault has stone hands and no finish. Elite shutdown C and gooad at faceoffs, which we need, but the lack of offense is a huge turnoff. This is a guy who should get no more than 4.5 aav but will probable get 6+. No thanks.

Keep it simple Buchs 5.8 is for Danault

To me, both of those players are key to our future cap management. I can see the Rangers moving Trouba to Florida in two years (either with a bit of retention or in return for the last year of Montour's contract) when Schneider is ready to step in to a full time role. That would leave Fox, Nils, and Schneider as the RD's. Moving Trouba and Kreider in 2 or 3 years is the key to cap management for this group.

I'd be amenable to that if the center issue solved itself without needing to use trade capital. Either way, it's a thread the needle situation.

I don't know much about Danault, but his stats leave much to be desired. Is it because he plays good defense? I still don't understand why everyone hates Strome who has elite chemistry with Panarin.

I don't hate him. I think our top 3 centers all have similar strengths and weaknesses and it wouldn't be a bad idea to get a different look in there (someone who is good at faceoffs, excellent defensively, takes the body, etc). And if we're going to move one of the three, Strome makes the most sense. Chytil is cheap with higher upside. Strome and Zib are both about to get paid and are about the same age, and Zib is the better player of the two by a pretty decisive margin.
