End of an era: no more having to wait with baited breath for that Kreider break out season
Posts like this get me a bit annoyed. For some reason many Ranger fans got it in their heads that Kreider was "supposed to be" a 40 goal scorer after breaking onto the scene in the 2012 playoffs and anything less than that in their mind is a disappointment. I mean he was the 19th pick in the draft not the 1st or 2nd. Most guys drafted in his spot do nothing. Kreider at least has been a top 6 player and a big playoff performer which isnt too shabby. He is also one of the top players in front of the net the past few years. He came back from that scary blood clot and looked even better. I mean ome are bitching about his last 20 games of the season but he was clearly injured otherwise he probably scores 35-40 goals. I just feel he is underappreciated. As much as I like Buchnevich its MUCH harder to replace what kreider brings

I think nothing is prepared and a desperation buyout comes in 2 days. Then we get beat up on a cap dump.

Glass half empty kinda guy eh lol

But maybe ... Names or Strome could get little back ....Kreider they won’t move unless it’s a good haul

I highly doubt Gorts has “nothing prepared.” The Rangers have been nothing but buttoned up since he took the reins. But that said... I wouldn’t be shocked if the moves he’s got available to him don’t blow us away.

Except we don’t have room to sign him after this season, and the league knows it.

I thought you could go 3 and still be a RFA but might have miscounted
I couldn't find anything to explicitly say he'll be a UFA in year x, so I'm working off the becoming a UFA at age 27 rule because he won't have 7 NHL seasons before then, he signed a 3 year ELC as a 21 year old, he's 24 now, this contract will take him to 26, which will be his last summer as an RFA because he'll turn 27 the April before that year's free agency

Good work.

And to confirm your work, Capfriendly has his deal ending with him being an arbitration-eligible RFA.

I would take a Names and Smith buyout over a Shattenkirk and Smith buyout. The latter option cripples the Rangers with $10M+ in dead space next year (with Girardi & Spooner).

A Names and Smith buyout gets you a $1.3M & $3.3M hit next year, plus Girardi's $1.1 & Spooner's $300K. Which equals $6M in dead space.

A Shattenkirk and Smith buyout gets you a $6M & $3.3M hit next year, plus Girardi's $1.1 & Spooner's $300K. Which equals $10.7M in dead space.

Girardi is currently at 3.6m, going down to 1.1 next year.

We have ~15 mill expecting to open up next seasson, this assuming one of the forwards get traded before the season. The only RFAs that need resigning are Georgiev and Nieves. Rangers have an expected 11 forwards under contract next season counting Kravtsov and assuming Boo is resigned. We have our entire D core filled, and many ELC contracts in Hartford waiting to fill any gaps that open up. So effectively, we have ~15m im space to resign Georgiev, Nieves, and then 2 more forwards assuming no more Fs are acquired via deadline trades. Nieves will likely be under 1m, and if hes not we can replace him with another depth player. Georgiev will get a bridge contract, comparables for his situation are around 2-3m on a short term deal (Grubauer, Hellebyuck).

So EVEN counting this dead space, we have 11m+ to sign 2 forwards to fill out the roster. Besides, we don't need to buy out both Shattenkirk and Smith, just shattenkirk should be enough to get Lemiuex and ADA.

By the end of this buyout window we will either have a trade, a buyout, or both. You don’t prematurely start this buyout window just to walk away at the end of it having done nothing and pigeon-holing yourself into a bad spot.

Kreider has only 17 more goals than Panarin in his career but he's also played in 138 more games. And even though Kreider has played in 138 more games, Panarin still has 49 more points than him.

Capfriendly is still showing contracts that would be in the AHL and either not count or count less against the cap (i.e. Beleskey, Nieves)

I think a lot of people believe moves are lined up because that's what they want to believe. I'm not seeing the evidence. The market is ground to a halt by RFAs. If the moves were there, he would have pulled the trigger by now.

We had cap space to re-sign Hayes. Teams knew that if they low balled us badly enough, we’d just re-sign him and try again later. That’s not the case with Kreider, now.

I don't really buy that Kreider will necessarily get us what Hayes did. Thing is though that people could look at what Nash brought back too--a late 1st, Lindgren, Spooner (who was kind of a cap dump to make it work) and Beleskey (absolutely a cap dump). By the way I thought Kreider was a better and more valuable player than Nash then and I think he will be when we move him.

But anyway there was more than one team in on Hayes at the deadline and there will in all likelihood be more than one team in on Kreider if he makes it to the deadline. The GM's of these teams are not going to get together to say that we're going to lowball the Rangers to see how cheaply one of us can get Kreider--that's not how it works. They're in competition with each other and a team trading for Kreider at the deadline is almost certainly figuring on the playoffs and going for it all....and Kreider has a pretty good history as a playoff performer--much better than Hayes or Nash anyway. Even so the market is different year to year but IMO the Rangers will probably get the best package back by waiting to deal him later than they will now.
