It will be higher at the TDL.

At this point, absolutely. I have to imagine they would have preferred to get fair value prior to the season for a number reasons:
-Less cap gymnastics to do
-Eliminate risk of injury
-Not put themselves in a position to have to sell off a key piece should they over-perform and be in contention for a playoff spot (this is an optics issue they likely prefer to avoid if possible).

But if it doesn't materialize, you sell him off at the deadline (possibly at 50% retained) for the best package of futures you can get

The Las Vegas newspaper has said several times the full $3MM was not insured

The Athletic has it fully insured.

The surface-level basics of the trade are in there: The Leafs get a draft pick for helping Vegas out. Clarkson is retired due to injury and his contract will live on long-term injured reserve (LTIR) the entire season. The actual money left to be paid out is only $1 million, and insurance will cover $800,000 of it.
So Toronto is out-of-pocket just $200,000 (which doesn’t count against the cap), moves out Sparks’ $750,000 deal and gets a mid-round pick.

Mirtle: Making sense of the bizarre trade that sent David...

What if.. It's only covered by Toronto's insurance because they were the ones who handed out the contract?
Teams get to designate certain players whose contracts are then insured by the League. I don't remember the details, but they're in the CBA. Other players, if their contracts are insured, it would be done through private insurance, and those policies should definitely be transferable to the acquiring team unless they were written in some completely bizarre manner (in which case I doubt the team would purchase the policy to begin with).

I can't say it's impossible, but it's highly unlikely.

The hilarious thing is that yesterday of all days, after seeing a pretty solid performance this past TDL and July 1, I said "okay, they've finally upped their game, time to reward them by signing up as a sponsor." LITERALLY YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.

Actually... maybe it was my fault? :sarcasm:

BRF signs HFBoards to a massive 1 year/$12 contract and now that HF is paid they just coasted. The hunger is no longer there.

Chris Kreider has been a very good soldier for the organization. A remarkably good number 20 pick. But - alas - his justifiable monetary needs and likely inevitable demise will mean he fits in better with a ”win now team” that wants to go for it right now - rather than signing 7x7 with us. We have gone down that road rewarding our good - yet not elite - homegrown talent with some extremely “nice”, big long-term contract money. Nuff said here.

Regarding destinations - I always thought Toronto was a good fit, but also San Jose, Nashville, Tampa and Boston all first come to mind. Winnipeg, Vegas and St Louis too. Some of these teams might not be able to squeeze him in now, but come TDL his value and the amount of suitors (add all PO contenders - especially if we retain $) should rise significantly. In reality we could get a bonanza reward with an auction at 50%.

Buyout Smith and make another shrewd roster move now to get cap compliant without getting too butt hurt. Wait and capitalize on new opportunities as there will be plenty further down the road as the league will feel the real cap crunch when the RFA dust settles and (lots of) money needs to be shed. One cannot win every deal. Looking ahead twds the bigger picture - we are still in pretty good shape.

100% agreed on your take @BBKers.

My only input is I feel Kreider has the fortitude to be a Gary Roberts type, where the health scare has reshaped his outlook on his future and what it takes to be where he wants to be.
He came back from his blood issue a different player. More focused, even though that hasn't translated into his stats so much. He seems stronger and more efficient in his game approach. IMO he has a longer prime into his mid 30's than most here, justifiably, believe. Although I 100% agree, his well earned next contract just isn't in line with what NYR is doing.

Christian Djoos is apparently on the block from the Caps after getting a 1y/$1.25M arbitration award. He has excelled when he's gotten the chance next to Carlson and even managed to put up very good numbers with Brooks Orpik as his partner.

We let Freddy Claesson, who was perhaps our best LD last year, walk depite a $715k QO.

Getting a very good and cheap LD every summer is trivial. While elite LDs are almost as rare as unicorns (much rarer than elite RDs), good/decent ones are dime a dozen. @Ola

How quickly do the Flames trade Bennett?

$7.4m in capspace with another $1m probably coming off when they demote someone. Tkachuk and Rittich as RFA's
