That's your opinion. There's ample reason to put Kreider ahead of some of those names. He's in pretty rare company as a play driver, and his impact on the Rangers is dramatic, evidenced by any time he's missed for injury.

But if you and the Rangers don't agree, then why would you extend him. I remember when Stralman was thought to be our fourth best defensemen. Sometimes a players worth isn't as obvious as counting stats.

That's also your opinion if you want to go that route

His impact on the Rangers has been dramatic because our Top-6 talent was pretty awful the past few years lol, but that is going to change with Panarin and our plethora of wing talent as they mature

There's no real way to justify giving him a 7x7 contract when we have Panarin, Kakko, Kravtsov, and Buchnevich

That would be great. I'd love for Conor Timmins to come back in any deal with the Avalanche (assuming he's healthy).

Something like Timmins, Shane Bowers and a first for an extended Kreider?

Avs fans are reluctant at doing their 1st and Bowers. I highly doubt we get their 1st + 2 good prospects, nevermind 1

To me, that's a weird way to evaluate. He's so much better than his teammates and that somehow means that losing him will be easily offset by the 18 and 19 year olds we've added as well as the obvious natural progression of a player who's best hockey has come stapled to Kreider's line?

Isn't the opposite true, as far as justification, that if Kreider has so far been on a different planet than his teammates, the addition of talent around him would only serve to increase his counting stats and buffer him if his play were to fall off?

If 7X7 is the price, it's a debate. IDK if that's the price. First of all. Second, to pretend that letting him go doesn't present a risk seems indefensible. If the reasoning is that the kids will be good, then you have to consider how certain you can be of prospects before they've even played a game in the NHL. You have to consider what kind of impact they'll be ready to make immediately and under what conditions (ie with what kind of on-ice support) they'd most likely grow to their potential within.

IDK if re-signing Kreider is the best move. I'm only raising the issue from the other side. There is a risk. The danger of the risk depends on how you view Kreider and how confident you are in the rest of the roster and it's trajectory in the next handful of years.

Pending his bonus was paid out, Clarkson is only owed a million bucks this season, Sparks owed 750k. Leafs bought a pick for 250 grand, and maybe less if there is insurance on the contract.
There is no insurance on the contract. I am not sure if the bonus has been paid out. I had heard he was a $3MM ticket if he was moved.

Still, the Leafs bought a pick nd dumped a contract they no longer wanted for money. Nice thinking.

i thought Horton was the one with the contract that wasn't insured

clarkson trade is definitely an odd deal...he'll be on LTIR so it has no real impact on the leafs since they will be at the cap anyway but not sure how a 4th round pick makes sense over potential space at the deadline...

they currently have 10.55 mil on LTIR between clarkson and horton...capfriendly currently shows them as over the cap, but remove the LTIR $$ and that gives them $9.8 mil in space which isn't enough to sign Marner. so interestin to see how that plays out

I mean, I guess it makes sense, but doesn't it absolutely screw them if they want to make any other moves this season?

yeah LTIR lets you go over the cap, so you only 'save' the amount over the cap so you can't bank cap space for the deadline. any deal made during the season would require equal salary going out...

disagree though with the tweet. first putting those 2 on LTIR doesn't clear space for marner cause they have been on LTIR for years. and its not a loophole. it really bothers me when people call anything that they don't like or doesn't favor their team as a loophole. A loophole is when you take advantage of the wording of the cba to pull off a move that is technically legal but wasn't intended. following the cba how it is intended isn't a loophole. it might be a bad rule that needs to be revisited in the next cba but the fact that you don't like it doesn't make it a loophole...little pet peeve of mine...end of rant lol
