Same here. Canceled mined a few weeks back . Carp is a complete idiot. I'd truthfully would MUCH rather Brooks land that gig.

I feel a little bad, as their Jets and Knicks coverage is actually pretty solid, but my main two sports are hockey and soccer. They barely cover MLS at all, and Carp is basically a living embodiment of the "old man yells at cloud" meme.

If Gallant wasn't here, and since it's silly season, I would have loved to see NYR go get Shipachov to center Panarin.

it's a fair swap

this board has inflated Lundkvists value. We currently value him more than we valued Fox.

Now that can't be true, on no planet would we entertain moving Fox for anyone. We're at least discussing fair levels of value in moving Lundkvist. I don't think Krebs is enough, though.

I'll say again, I've heard people say that Lundkvist is right there with Seider as the best defensive prospect in hockey (at least before Power was drafted). Even if that is hyperbole to an extent he's certainly in the Sanderson/Drysdale near-range, as opposed to the range more around like Thomas Harley or Phillip Broberg.

Would you trade Drysdale or Sanderson or Seider for Krebs? No way. Even if Lundkvist is a bit less than them, he's very, very good. He's worth more than Krebs is.

I don't know that I actually even see a non-NHL center that I'd trade Lundkvist for straight up. Who else is there? Lundell or Newhook? (ie assuming that guys who have played in the NHL already in Zegras and Byfield are off the table).

I'm talking about Fox the prospect

but yes, I'd still trade Lundkvist for Krebs. Strength for need

If your expectation for this team is that it has to be better than a team that--if not broken up this summer--would have been 10+million over the cap, then you are going to be sorely disappointed.

Aim high, Willis! Aim high!

That roster was a once-in-a-lifetime superteam that only stayed together because of cap shenanigans. While I agree (and argued for) trading Kreider before they re-signed him, neither Kreider nor Buch would have brought back a player of Point's caliber.

We can't have elite players at every position (ie: the best of the best 1st liners, 2nd liners, 3rd liners, etc). It isn't feasible. The cap forces every team to make choices.

No, I'm not insinuating that Kreider or Buch would have brought back a player of Point's caliber. I'm just saying we aren't as close as it seems.

Dom L puts out with the Athletic a "contender checklist," and if we operate under the assumption that he's mostly right (of course not every contender is uniform, but there are certain talent level checkmarks you have to meet), and that by time we reach those checkpoints with players like Kakko and Lafreniere, that Mika will no longer check the 1C box, then we still have a ways to go.

I can foresee a scenario where we don't have to have any Point or Zibanejad level center... but then we better be friggin' deep at center instead. So then we need maybe 2 more 1B types.

Meh, Carp has his moments and Shayna's analytics are pretty good. $5/month is not going to push me over the edge financially and their NHL coverage, overall, is pretty good so again, meh.

As far as this Eichel crap goes... I can't be on board. Even if we remove the "neck factor" it makes little to no sense.

I think Zibanejad has been a better player over the past two seasons - particularly if you give him the benefit of the doubt with his Covid positive test and falling off a cliff early last season. But, let's say for arguments sake that Eichel is better and will be slightly better than Zibanejad over the course of the next five seasons.

1.) At the 9M+ it'll take to re-sign him, you're not keeping Zibanejad AND Eichel. So it's one or the other.
2.) Buffalo has a cheap ass owner who is unlikely to retain
3.) Let's keep what's going the other way on the low side - Strome, Georgiev, Jones, 2022 1st for arguments sake.

Do we agree on 1-3? Good.

So, if we keep Zibanejad and re-sign him - let's say 7 x 9.5, the cost of that is a cap hit in the same ballpark as Eichel. Let's say Strome performs at roughly the same level this season up until the deadline. Let's assume Jones gets 3rd pairing minutes and finds his legs as a 3rd pair D (which I think is a conservative estimate). Georgiev is practically worthless at this point. However a 1st in next year's draft, considered a very deep draft by most prognosticators, is a valuable commodity. I'm also going to assume that, if the roster stays as is, that a playoff spot is going to be very tough to come by next year and Strome, if he's not traded before October, will be a deadline move. Same for Zibanejad as you can't keep both in 2022 who will likely return a little less than Eichel - 1st, 3rd, A/B Prospect. Sound good? Okay.

So, in essence, we're left with the following:

Zibanejad at 7x9.5M
Strome, let's say moved at deadline for a 2nd and 3rd
Georgiev plays decent and can be traded at deadline for a 3rd or plays poorly and has little or no value
Jones on your 3rd pair
1st in 2022
-------------------------

Zibanejad, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, possible 3rd, and Jones are your retained assets.

Eichel
- Strome
- Georgiev
- Jones
- 1st 2022
+ Zibanejad moved at deadline/Sept. for 1st, 3rd, and a A/B prospect
--------------------------

Eichel, 1st, 3rd, A/B prospect coupled with the loss of 3 NHL players.

I think I go with the first scenario. I realize it's speculative but I also think it's realistic.

Speaking of stickhandling, I think Lafreniere is more likely to be able to make the apt switch the RW than Kreider, eventually.

I know he fashions himself as an outside playmaker, but his shot is tremendous.
Yes, this. Gallant even said in a recent interview he wouldn’t be opposed to trying LaF at RW. Kreids switching around this point in his career is unlikely
