The more I think about Drouin and Mack playing together, the more excited I am. Bedsy tried Denis freaking Malgin on the 1st line at times because of a lack of bodies. Sure Drouin has his warts, but you don’t lose the talent this kid has. I can see Drouin having a feel good comeback story type of year.

They didn't bring Drouin in to not play him with Mackinnon.

Drouin - Mack - Nuke
Lehky - RyJo - Mikko
Wood - Colton - LOC
Cogs - Meyers - Olofsson

That is the lineup as of today. It's missing a 3rd line winger so LOC starts on the 4th line and Olofsson as 13th forward/AHL. Maybe also missing a 4C.

But the Top 6 is locked in.

Drouin - Mack - Nuke
Lehky - RyJo - Mikko
Wood - Colton - Foudy
Cogs - Meyers - LOC

I still think Foudy is more ready than Olofsson. There is already enough engine on the third line it doesn't need LOC. Putting him on the 4th should help keep him fresh and we all know how he looks when over used.

Colton will do other things that will replace the lack of offense. Its not like houdini compher where he provides nothing but once in awhile does something ok.

Compher had significantly better defensive metrics than Colton and is an all situation player. Colton had average defensive metrics on a strong Tampa team and didn't PK for them. And yet we moaned and moaned (and moaned ana moaned and moaned) about JTC at $3.5M AAV.

Considering the $4M AAV, I think we're counting on Colton chipping in offensively, at least 40 points per year. Not unthinkable with the increased amount of ice time we'll be giving him. But if it's only 20-30 points and bringing the gritty, try hard attitude that Bednar likes to the bottom 6 (i.e. the other things), I don't think we'll have enough to justify the investment. We'll see.

I know that we don't draft well and all of that stuff but I do think that Drouin could maybe turn into what Nuchuskin is now. It never worked out with their old clubs and it took 4-5 years until Nuke really understood his true potential in the right environment. The talent is there.

That negative thing is that we won't be able to afford Toews and Girard if Drouin gets like 30G 45A playing with Mack. You never know.

Olofsson, the guy Dallas traded to us for nothing. I think he’s more likely to make the opening night roster than Meyers because he’s not waiver exempt and will be cheaper. If they sign someone else Meyers is pushed down and his pay doesn’t matter as long as it’s under the bury limit. He only has waiver exemption for 10 more games so I think they’ll play the game of keep him down until an injury forces him to stay up. So I absolutely wouldn’t take into account what his contract will be in regards to remaining cap space. I think it will be more like 800k anyway. He’s either going to try and get one way, term or if that doesn’t work high AHL pay in exchange for lower AAV.

Colton has to be 40-45 guy while playing gritty to justify this contract. I think hes more than capable. By the end of year 3 we are all going to either wish we signed him longer or we cant wait to unload him. I think its going to be the former.

What about Colton at LW next to Mackinnon to take draws and do the dirty work like Landy used to do. Move Drouin to 3C with Wood.

Put anyone with Mackinnon. He will elevate that line.

Spread the wealth.

Colton- Mackinnon- Nichushkin
Lehkonen- Johansen- Rantanen
Wood- Drouin- O'Connor
Olofsson- Meyers- Cogliano
