Ross Colton gets 2 + 5 (7 minute PP) and a game for boarding and cross check

hughes is gonna break something if he doesn't figure out how to handle the forecheck better. would have to imagine he'll get to watch video of that and the coach will have several tips for him. i think it's a pretty light boarding call honsetly, mostly just hughes getting surprised by colton hitting him harder than he expected. that's gonna keep happening so buckle up buddy.

the crosscheck to the face is really the only thing worth talking about in here, dirtbag move all around to lumber someone in the face like that.

The only thing missing is the interference to go with the boarding, so he got away with 2 minutes.

And again, I'm not going to stop saying that George Parros was the WORST choice to put in charge of the DoPS.

It's absolute ridiculous to have a goon in that position.

A goon who would minimize what punishments should be meted out 'cause he uses his own discretion based on experience from a bygone era where Goonery was commonplace.

This would have been shoulder to shoulder if Hughes hadn't turned. Look how much he turns and puts himself off balance in just a few feet.

Look at the last frame. Where would Hughes shoulder be in relation to Colton's shoulder if he hadn't turned?

This complaint about Parros has been made several times on the Avs boards. The Avs had their share of questionable plays against them ignored and certain Avs players have also had excessive suspensions.

You’re preaching to the choir on this. Everyone knows Parros isn’t suited for this and that there are glaring gaffes and inconsistencies with his judgment. It’s not new.

Well okay then.

But that doesn't mean it should stop being brought up.

I mean Shannahan wasn't exactly perfect when he was in that role but I can't see he was any worse than this clown.

What the NHL needs to do (which they won't) is hire some NON-NHL Person to do this job.

That way, he has zero bias-through-experience to use to either increase/decrease the level of punishments meted out.

But that would be way too logical for Bettman and the NHLPA would definitely not sign off on that. BAH. :thumbd:

Honestly, the root of the problem is that the union focuses more on the every player than its stars. And as a result the suspensions are extremely light given some of the brutality involved. It’s ironic...paradoxical (?) maybe to suspend players 40 games for gambling while not doing more to protect its players while the league is in bed with gambling sites. The union has a hand in that though. You can tell who has the loudest voice within the union.

The problem is that Huges isn’t eligible to be hit.

He’s expecting to battle, not expecting to get drilled into the boards.

You see shoulder to shoulder contact like that multiple times a game when chasing down a puck on the forecheck though. That's perfectly legal.

The reason he got drilled instead of just being knocked off balance or something, is because he turned his back and didn't brace for the hit, because he didn't think he would be touched.

Exactly.

Parros was the player I hated the most and was surprised that he was hired. Based on the experience, goons tend to minimize everything because he thinks that hits is what the NHL needs. It isn't what the NHL needs. They need superstars to thrive and because it's too many teams in the league, Most teams get only 1 or 2 superstars on one of the position for the whole roster and they cannot afford to lose at least one of them.

If you have had 21 teams, you can afford to lose one of them and still not miss a beat because you have another stars that can take up his spot. Nowadays, you really cannot afford to lose because you do not have any other star and the team suffers. You cannot really trade for one unless it's for one superstar for another superstar and he's injured.

Protect your assets with heavy punishment and you'll see unnecessary hits out of the game quickly.

Has anyone mentioned that 2 + 5 for 7 minute powerplay is almost a lost art these days, used to see it called more frequently

If you look closely you’ll see okposo in the corner of the screen breathing towards Colton. That surely boosted colton

Suspend okposo!!!

Ross wipes his ass with 5k.

Once again George Parros sympathizes with the Scum bags.

But that's not surprising considering Parros's career.

Things were much more fair when Shanny was in his position.

Putting a Career GOON in charge of Player Safety is amazing in its stupidity.
What? Usually I agree but these were nothing plays.

Hughes got hit hard.

Meier was looking for trouble and skated into Colton's hands as he was protecting himself. He then to proceeded to sell it harder than Couture sells a Dive.

Who says you can't find comedy in the Main Board?

The hit on Hughes looked way worse in real time, so I can see why they called it a major and I agree with knocking it down to a minor.
The cross-check is completely unnecessary and reckless, Av fans can say all they want about how aggressively Meier came at him, it doesn't change the fact that he doesn't touch him and gets a stick across his jaw for it. Absolutely a major, intentional cross-checks to the face should always be a major.
Refs don't usually get it so right, but they nailed this one.

Not all Avs fans think that. The crosscheck is easily the most idiotic event of this whole ordeal. Easily a 5 minute and I'd say he's lucky he got the misconduct because if he didn't, he'd likely have gotten a 1 game suspension. I think the refs got this one right on the money.

You're the one keeping this thread going man. I've had 5 pages of laughs.
My last post (the one you initially responded to) was about 5 hours ago.

There were 7 posts between that one and the one you responded to (including YOURS).

"kept this thread going"? I don't think so.

Besides, you're the one who responded with a ridiculous Take regarding Colton/Meier. ("skated into Colton's hands"...What a f'n joke)

C'mon man... :laugh::laugh::laugh:

This isn’t boarding, as Hughes isn’t eligible to be checked here. So it’s interference, and it’s violent and unnecessary enough it should be of the 5 minute major variety.

How is anyone defending this? Are you out of your minds?
