You’re allowed to battle for a puck no? It was a 50/50 puck battle. Hughes will learn that you can’t be that soft there, if he engaged physically with Colton there then it’s a nothing play. It's boarding.. "shoulder to shoulder" doesn't matter.

most guys nowadays only meet bodies that close to the boards; especially in the regular seasonYou’re allowed to battle for a puck no? It was a 50/50 puck battle. Hughes will learn that you can’t be that soft there, if he engaged physically with Colton there then it’s a nothing play.
That is a wrong message to send. This is not a hockey play, period. This is going to be phrasing out of this type of hits. Hope that DOPS sends a message that this is not acceptable. Beside the puck has passed Hughes and did not even touch the puck and there is no need to make a hit.Welcome to the NHL, kiddo.
The high hit after the initial was the right call. Just dumb play.
The Hughes hit was a penalty but that looks from Hughes a similar thing we’ve seen with Slaf in Montreal and some other young players coming in unprepared for the level of physicality in the NHL. So often that exact type of approach by Colton and Hughes in a puck race to a corner leads to both players skating/bumping into each other. Pretty easy to see that Colton thought was coming there. Not sure what Hughes was doing but it did end up being boarding.
Good on the refs calling it a major initially so they can review it
If I was having fun at a live NHL game and still posting on HF during it, I'd probably have to do some deep reflection.I'm sitting 7 rows up from where it took place and it didn't look bad.
According to the rulebook, yes. That's not how the rulebook has been applied in the NHL though, never has been. Unlike in Europe and international hockey, NHL basically allows boarding as it described in the rulebook. The way refs actually call boarding is basically using it as a substitute for "checking from behind".It's boarding.. "shoulder to shoulder" doesn't matter.

Man that's just not how people in the world operate these days. For better or worse, probably worse tbh, it's not abnormal behavior at all to be on your phone while at an event or something. If I was having fun at a live NHL game and still posting on HF during it, I'd probably have to do some deep reflection.
Yea? It was a loose puck battle. Players engage physically going for those all the time, is this your first day watching hockey? You mean the puck that went sliding by them?
Meier was coming in with his stick up high as well, Colton put his up to protect himself. If Colton actually cross checked Meier in the face trust me he wouldn't be standing up still. The first one is a penalty. I think he got a little unlucky with how Hughes was turning, and it actually could have been much worse since Luke almost has his leg taken out. It's unfortunate, but I still don't have a problem with that being a penalty. It wasn't a battle where the stronger player won.
The second one is just dumb. I'm assuming this is where the 5 came from?
I think the hit happens no matter what thug is sitting on the bench. These hits happen all the time. If he hadn't cross checked Meier it's just another in a long line of borderline hits that get penalized. Colton didn't go into that hit hoping to hit Hughes in the back it just turned out that way. If the play ends and he says something vaguely apologetic to Hughes and skates to the box it's not noteworthy.jersey needs some muscle so these types of plays dont happen
Oh, I'm sorry. He gave him a warning shot. What are you even saying? He could have hurt him more but didn't really want to? He still did what he did.Meier was coming in with his stick up high as well, Colton put his up to protect himself.
