The hit on Hughes looked way worse in real time, so I can see why they called it a major and I agree with knocking it down to a minor.
The cross-check is completely unnecessary and reckless, Av fans can say all they want about how aggressively Meier came at him, it doesn't change the fact that he doesn't touch him and gets a stick across his jaw for it. Absolutely a major, intentional cross-checks to the face should always be a major.
Refs don't usually get it so right, but they nailed this one.
There a definitely more than a couple in this thread saying it wasn't boarding and Meier was acting hurt. Some are saying it was dumb, but some are definitely saying it shouldn't have been called at all or even worse praising Colton for this play.Avs fans have been almost universally saying the Meier high stick was a dumb thing to do.
Avs fans aren’t even disputing the Hughes penalty other than pointing out it happened because Hughes let his guard down on a play that typically involves jostling.

If the league wants to modernize they will eventually have to restrict the constant unnecessary hits to the back and non-devastating cross checks they allow.I think the boarding is dumb/dangerous, but the league generally gives those 2 or 5 depending on the weather. I have a bigger problem with the crosscheck. Ref is right there and Colton comes with momentum, just really reckless and dumb. Butt-end looks exposed and its not a very controlled crosscheck, those can go poorly- maybe just don’t allow crosschecks to the head in general.
Give him 5+ games. He hit another dude in the head with his stick. Can’t believe I know this will be controversial, but the league shouldn’t allow that at all. League needs more Hughes, and fewer unskilled goons, but unfortunately dinosaurs in high positions..
Never once said anything about getting anything out of the game, it was a minor penalty and I agree with that call. So I don't know why you're giving me a passive aggressive response when we seem to agree on what was called here. It’s also been said the hit on Hughes in the corner needs to be removed from the game when the only reason it was dangerous is because he let his body go limp as though he expected there to be no contact at all. Jostling between the two players is what happens in this scenario 99% of the time. If a more experienced player than Hughes is involved, it’s more likely a nothing play that happens all the time.
Are they going to get the jostling out of the game?
I think the hit happens no matter what thug is sitting on the bench. These hits happen all the time. If he hadn't cross checked Meier it's just another in a long line of borderline hits that get penalized. Colton didn't go into that hit hoping to hit Hughes in the back it just turned out that way. If the play ends and he says something vaguely apologetic to Hughes and skates to the box it's not noteworthy.
I'm a 90's kid so call me nostalgic.Yeah.
If it was the 90s.

I see this brought up all the time, and even as a NYR fan I can't help but roll my eyes at this. Like, you can't call another player dirty, speak about a bad hit, or just even just voice your opinion on play because you had a dirty player on your team, in an era the league accepted it without penalty punishment?I'm a 90's kid so call me nostalgic.
Devils fans got to watch years of Stevens obliterating guys, not so fun when it's against your own guys now is it?
Am I crazy or is that a clean hit. Dman have become so soft. Dude is gliding to the puck.
Engage the play and protect the puck and yourself
Except the type of hits he delivered then (like other players of that era) would be penalties now.I'm a 90's kid so call me nostalgic.

Teams have also targeted Bratt as well.Hughes- In slow motion it's not clear that Hughes "turned at the last second" like the broadcast was trying to say... so absolutely not at full speed. What I can tell from the replay is that Colton was staring at Hughes' numbers for seconds before throwing that hit. He knew he had the kid in a vulnerable position and took advantage.
Meier crosscheck- The definition of a wires crossing moment.
I would imagine a fine is coming not a suspension.. but real brain dead crap from Colton.
This is also the second player born in NJ that was given a match penalty. First Clifton on Hischier and now Colton on Hughes/Meier which is kind of funny.
The most frustrating thing to me is that other teams are taking liberties with our star players. Hischier, Jack and Luke, and Meier have been targeted and it's because the Devils are soft and play a fast-skilled game with zero toughness and that's going to have to change.
I actually didn't mind Hamilton taking a stupid penalty drilling Miles wood because Wood plastered Siegenthaler and this team hardly if ever steps up and retaliates. It's annoying.
2 minute minor is ok as you could call interference too. hughes made a rookie mistake, he needs to be ready for a puck battle. he cant be skating like hes still in the pregame warmup.Am I crazy or is that a clean hit. Dman have become so soft. Dude is gliding to the puck.

No but what is Bettman going to do about it? Guys are getting penalized heavily for targeting our players... but hockey is a game that polices itself and the Devils are doing ZERO about it.Teams have also targeted Bratt as well.
Is this the NHL Bettman wants?
If the Devils do ANYTHING about it, guess who gets penalized? No but what is Bettman going to do about it? Guys are getting penalized heavily for targeting our players... but hockey is a game that polices itself and the Devils are doing ZERO about it.
You honestly don’t see Hughes turn at the last second? I’m fine with it being a 2min but they were shoulder the whole way until the very last second. You can see from the behind view replay quite well. Maybe Hughes is squaring up to reverse the puck but he absolutely turns and then for whatever reason doesn’t brace for contact. He will learn that in time though.Hughes- In slow motion it's not clear that Hughes "turned at the last second" like the broadcast was trying to say... so absolutely not at full speed.
