I think we know that, just not Knies
I think the main issue in regards to prospect assessment is that there are reasons to not be thrilled about 3-5 of your top prospects when it comes to trying to fit pieces into the mould in the future. I could be wrong and correct me if I am but here is more or less how I see the Leafs pool.
1. Knies - obviously most attractive, however due to positional need etc very realistic to see why he wouldn’t be moved. Probably a 2nd/3rd line scorer with a bit of grit to the game.
2. Robertson - undersized player who’s probably ready now, good shooter and plays hard. Issue he hasn’t stayed healthy at all throughout his career. Could very easily be above Knies if his injury concerns weren’t consistently repeated and a serious red flag.
3. Niemela - undersized d man. Probably a safe bet to play in the NHL. However, I don’t necessarily love smaller d men that aren’t elite skaters. Probably tops out as a bottom pairing guy. Wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. But not too attractive with our current d contracts and needing to draft and develop a top 4 guy in the near future.
4. Minten - seems to have a ceiling as a 3rd line center who is a 200 ft player. If there is a real unwillingness to not move Knies. This would be my preferred target.
5. Hirovenen - small center, don’t know much about his game. But I don’t know many small centers that stick long in the NHL and I would prefer to avoid without seeing him on NA ice.
Of those 3 personally I wouldn’t really be thrilled about Robertson, Niemela or Hiroven. I think these 5 are the only ones at this moment you can say have a good chance to make the NHL. Personally would prefer Minten and be completely happy with Minten and a 1st as the main pieces of a deal.
I could be completely wrong in regards to what these players are and I accept that. However, from reading reports etc, this seems to be a fair assessment in my mind.
