To leafs : O Reily
To St Louis : shit, junk, misfitted players, vets that reached their peak, KHL bound player, overpaid 3rd liner + 1st.

Not giving up much? I guess I would say not getting much in return either.

In this cap/parity era, no team ever has more than about a 15% chance at the cup. Adding a player like ROR improves the Leafs chances at best by something like 1% and going from 11% to 12% or whatever just isn't worth it IMO. When your core players are all just entering their primes, going all in makes no sense at all. Stay the course, be one of the top teams for at least the next 5-7 years or so. Going all in because of "since 93" isn't logical, it would be making a desperate move based on emotion.

Matthews will be up for an extension.

THAT is why you go all in because you need a run, not because of 93.

I get that you're trying to be funny, but the Leafs should pass. This is supposed to be a very strong draft so that 1st is quite valuable.

Matthews being up for an extension isn't relevant here.

I couldn't disagree more, It's why I expect Dubas to go all in, Truly all in because his franchise center needs an extension.

His coach needs an extension.

HE needs an extension

So yeah I do expect a big move

So, if the Leafs go all in and lose, thus reducing the chance for future Leafs team to win, isn't there a good chance that Matthews decides to leave because his chances of winning in Toronto have become less? Whereas a more rational approach to the deadline that keeps the future in mind likely leaves the chance of a fururer Leafs win at about the same level.

I agree.

I think it's odd to say that a big deadline move by the Maple Leafs has nothing to do with an extension for Matthews because they are quite obviously linked together.

If the Maple Leafs lose in the first round of the playoffs this spring I think it seriously would hurt their chances of extending Auston Matthews. Even if they won a round and then fizzled out in the second round, it could be very damning for their chances.

And it's extremely important for the Maple Leafs to extend Auston Matthews, but if the team disappoints again in the post season, who could blame him if chose to not sign an extension and instead go to market and try to find a situation where he believes he has a better chance to win?

The Leafs *have* to have a successful spring or it could change the course of the franchise. The pressure is on.

More rumors on who the Leafs would be interested in. O'Reilly really continues to headline the target list.

If O'Reilly is a consideration, why not Tarasenko?? I don't think this team needs a center so desperately, just a top six forward. Either one of Tarasenko or O'Reilly would be huge for them.

What if Calgary or Florida don't gain footing? Would Huberdeau, Kadri, Reinhart, Verhaeghe, etc. become trade bait targets??

ROR is worth more, so Doug Armstrong will hold his mud

You do realize that Ryan O'Reilly being absolutely horrid this year is something we all know? Do people expect him to magically start playing good again and that he's mailing it in because he's on an average-to-bad team? Because the Blues are honestly in the position that they are in, in major part due to him being terrible. A lot of people had the Blues building off of last season and actually being good, so you can't even say that he's not trying because he's on a bad team or whatever the excuse is right now.

ROR is absolutely NOT worth more than Knies lol.

That's the first time I've heard Hold his mud
I was once filming a public meeting during a state legislature session for work (legally) and the committee chair stopped the meeting and demanded I stop filming and I simply ignored the man because I knew the law. He could simply not believe I was not obeying him and he stopped the meeting to go get the capitol police (who explained the law to this clown). I never even considered stopping filming. One of the legislators walked over to me and congratulated me on holding my mud, that's where I heard it.

His underlying numbers are pretty good, the Blues are a mess, and he'll get a 1st+.
