Rumor: Rocky Thompson hired as Asst. Coach

Toughness on the ice is one thing. Your assistant coach trying to fight a star player is a different thing altogether. Not to mention this guy got fired by the Sharks because he refused to get vaccinated.
From what I’ve read he didn’t refuse. He can’t get it for medical reasons. Pretty significant difference.

And is Kane really a team mate? If it was any other player I’d agree. But it was Evander Kane so he likely should have gotten an award of some kind. I mean what was he supposed to do Kane wasn’t wearing a track suit that day.

I think you deserve the bottom-ranked PP coming up this year.

I remember reading an ESPN article last summer on “the top rising coaching candidates” for NHL jobs.

Rocky Thompson was listed in the “Up and Comer” category with Carbery, Knoblauch, Leach, Troy Mann.

Supposedly Thompson “gave a speech about offense in hockey that was ‘incredibly motivating & impressive’” according to someone ESPN interviewed who was at the same coaching clinic.

Another poll respondent said he was a rising, hot name who would probably be an NHL head coach “sooner rather than later.”

He had successful head coaching stints in Windsor (won the 2017 memorial cup) & Chi Wolves (2019 Calder Cup final).

I posted a thing awhile ago it was a segment with Aaron Ward talking about Marty St. Louis & how despite his coaching inexperience especially at the high level. He’s essentially made up for it with being able to resonate better with players than the older coaches. He’s played in the NHL with some of the veterans & he was coaching his kids who have been coming up through the ranks. So he’s familiar with both with both generations & he’s not too far removed from it himself.

This was around draft time so it was in the context of prospects interviewing but he said MSL was a big hit amongst prospects that interviewed with Montreal. He quickly won over the Montreal locker room when he got there. He said he’s doing so because he’s being genuine. He’s not trying to play games or put on some act. He said that’s why MSL has been such a hit so far & it’s the future of the game.
pretty careless thing to say to the media. A bit insulting to a lot of his fellow coaches, across all the sports leagues, as well as legendary coaches throughout all of sports history. And pretty silly too, something that sounds vaguely true as long as you don't put much thought into it (which I don't think St Louis really did) because once you start to think about it it breaks down in a hurry and gets pretty grey. Don't really feel like getting into a long winded debate about it though. I do feel like saying, and this isn't specifically related to what St Louis said, that a father-figure type is better for a sports team than a buddy, and a teacher the students hold a bit of fear for and will raise his voice at in front of the class if they're playing around on their phone will get better results

A quote on Rocky Thompson’s PP breakouts from his assistant coach (Nardella) on the AHL Wolves:

“He’s strong with power play philosophies. Lots of different breakouts. Some of the teams we played, not many teams vary with their power play breakouts. But we did. He was very creative with that.”

The Sharks had the 9th worst xGF/60 and the 10th worst GF/60 on the PP last season. And that's with Karlsson, Burns, Meier, Hertl, Couture as your top 5. Now, this visionary gets to work with the dead last PP in the NHL, sans Giroux.
Problem is Thompson wasn't coaching last season. He coached for one season in San Jose, 2020-21.

On June 7, 2017, Thompson was hired as head coach of the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League.[5] He spent three seasons in the position before joining the San Jose Sharks as an associate coach on September 22, 2020.[6] He did not return for the 2021–22 season, as he would not be vaccinated against COVID-19 as required by the NHL for people in close contact with the players.[7][8]

My bad. So, they were the 5th worst scoring PP in 2020-21. I feel better.

Marty St. Louis didn’t say any of that. It was Aaron Ward saying it about Marty St. Louis.

Believe Charlie was the one saying that there was a feeling certain members of that old guard - believe Clarke was mentioned, wanted the players to be more "uncomfortable".

Feeling the need to make your employees “uncomfortable” definitely, definitely won’t have a negative impact on the players. Workplaces, that run in this manner, create through their own incompetence, shit employee performance and productivity. This is a mindset that breeds failure. ALWAYS. It’s so counterproductive and stupid, that it’s wild these f***s who think this is good actually have jobs themselves.

****Yasssss I know there were a lot of commas in that sentence.****

Lol

I remember when Thompson first came up in Calgary. He played up a screws-loose look & persona. It got him a handful of NHL games. A clever marketing move.

You read about him as a coach — certainly an intelligent & thoughtful coach who studies the game.

Yeah, the one time he got to run an NHL PP it was lousy on a disjointed SJ team. Big deal.

I’ve read enough already to know he thinks & analyzes the game well, is organized, & isn’t a stagnant “dino” thinker, but rather a respected young rising coach.

Who are you and what the hell are you going on about?

I had a couple people at my work who suddenly had “medical conditions” that prevented them from getting the vaccine when it was mandated. Both were hardcore Trump supporters. Consider me skeptical of Thompson’s reasons.

A good in-depth article on Thompson & his philosophies:

Ill admit, he comes off as pretty enthusiastic in this, and perhaps it transmits well to younger players that buy in. I’m actually not really all that concerned with the incident with Evander Kane. Kane’s a piece of shit. Unprofessional, for sure. Mostly likely forgivable. His results thus far with the PP however, leaves much to be desired.

Yeah, You know Evander tries to challenge coaches & intimidate players. Make himself the de facto chief. Knock them down on rungs.

I say good for Thompson in that incident. You want to cause some unnecessary BS confrontation, & challenge the coaches for probably the 50th time, to divide the locker room, then go ahead tough guy. Fight your coach.
