I am obviously happy for the Amerks and our organization, but I am particularly happy for Subban. He just seems like a really good dude and I am glad he is having success in the playoffs.
He's a great part of this. Prior to coming to Buffalo, he'd bounced around the NHL and not had a lot of game action. Chicago had apparently told him he was going to get games, then went and got Fleury which pushed him down to their farm team and ultimately made him an option when the Sabres hit their goalie issues.
As teammates go, he's tight with guys on both the big club and in Rochester. He's got some everyman to him - love how he handles the press huddles and interviews, the glimpses we see of him with his teammates. And it hasn't been perfect, but I for one can appreciate watching him work through all of this. I wish him nothing but the best, no matter what comes.
Not sure of the loop holes but I think there’s a possibility he can play a certain number of games in the A as a “tryout”. Shane Wright saw 8 games in the NHL, then 8 in the AHL this season before being sent back to juniors. Think we will see a similar treatment of Savoie next year to get him adjusted to pro hockey unless he is too good to send down in his NHL games.
Savoie misses the AHL deadline of turning 20 by December 31st of next season by a day. If there was no COVID, he would have satisfied the years played caveat and be eligible. Since he did play Junior A by going to the USHL during COVID, the Sabres could try to challenge to see if they could get his eligibility handled that way. As for the "tryout", if his team goes out in the playoffs (they are down 3-1 in the WHL Finals), he can be assigned to Rochester for the remainder of their playoffs. For next year, if the Sabres don't push the USHL season challenge, it's only on a conditioning assignment to send him to the AHL. Most teams don't want to do that.
