Honestly, I don't care if Penner never scores another goal for the Kings. His contributions in bringing us the Cup last year will forever be appreciated. Only the bean counters like you will remind us of exactly what you wrote in your post above. Besides, thought you subscribed to the notion that players can contribute to the cause without scoring goals?
yeah..my vision is blurred with that shiny Cup Penner helped us get. so be it.
I'll always say that we have now won that trade for him being a useful cog in bringing us a cup. 100% agree. I've said I'd trade Kopitar for peanuts if it guaranteed us another cup this year. There's no need to try and belittle me, we are on the same side.
But I can also look past that shiny cup gleam to at least acknowledge the fact that based on what Penner has done for us as a King is not what we expected from him, outside of one decent playoff run. On a purely hockey trade sense, Penner was a bust.
And of course there is more to a game than scoring goals. That said, when you trade for a guy who has scored 20+ goals a season repeatedly, and just had a 30+ goal year before that, then to expect more than 15 goals in 145 games isn't out of the ordinary, is it?
Not to mention for every Penner, we've had numerous Mark Parrish's and Anson Carter's. Penner's saving grace on this board is that he won a cup and played decently doing so. Not great, not stellar, decently.
Now if Regehr goes on to be a key cog in us winning the cup again this year, by all means I'll throw my support behind this trade. Winning the cup comes first, all other things are secondary. But at this point it has done nothing but amount to one good game.
Which all goes back to my initial point, which has been sidetracked by our discussion, and that is that it is rather silly to call out people for their opinion after one game.
