Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - offseason edition

Is Jack dead or something?

I'll give you Zetterlund. Bastian sucks. Sharangovich reverted back to a mid tier bottom 6 player. Boqvist wouldn't move the needle one way or another and McLeod is a vile piece of shit.
Yeah, we need better depth but the constant pining away for some of those guys is a bit much. Sharangovich had 2 more goals than "broken down and needs to be put to pasture" Ondrej Palat this season, and he's signed for 5 more years at slightly less than what Palat is making. And while I would love to have Zetterlund back now, moving him for Timo made sense (even if he's been underwhelming overall as a Devil).

Unfortunately because we haven't drafted/developed forwards very well in recent years there isn't much coming from within in terms of young, cost controlled scoring depth. Grits is hopefully one of those guys next year, and maybe Lenni ends up being one too, but there's not much after that.

re: Dougie

If they get Quinn, I will be way more open to trading him. You don't recoup 50-60 pts of offense replacing Hamilton with Casey or Nemec.
Quinn or no Quinn right now is the time to move on from Dougie. I truly believe there's a team out there who has no problem giving us a random draft pick for him & I'm fine with that. Going back 6 years this year he played the 2nd most amount of games in a season. Guy is made from glass. Now is the time to sell high on him. One more injured season & we're never offloading that contract. There's also nothing scarier when its a 2 vs 1 and its Dougie defending. Guy is slowwwwww. We can spend that 9 million on a 3rd line center, a top 9 winger & a random bottom pair vet dman who can stay in the lineup until Kovy returns. We would be much better off right there.

Will they go after another veteran RD? Maybe not.

SHOULD you let Jacob Trouba and Radko Gudas stop you from fixing the worst power play in hockey. Definitely not.
They have Zellweger and Lacombe that they will want use on the PP . One other guy I can’t remember his name but is looking like a stud for them . I don’t think Dougie is a fit in AnA

It doesn't help that Fitz has traded away some guy who he has drafted within the last two or three years. Some aren't going to amount to anything (Stillman) but some look like they had potential (Bardkahov). Hopefully Lachance turns into some of the bottom 6 help we need.

Zets fir a pick, being him back

Zellweger and Lacombe were both an absolute disaster on the PP.

Just because a guy exists and has been tried on a PP doesn't make him a PPQB

You are assuming Dougie would even waive to go to Anaheim
I didn't assume anything of the sort

Someone said that dougie would put teams who wouldn't be interested in a guy like him as the 10 teams he can be sent to, naming anaheim.

I pointed out that a team with the worst PP in hockey should absolutely be looking at a top tier PP weapon

If you think you're finding a bottom pairing vet dman, a top 9 winger, AND a 3C for 9 million dollars combined prepare to be in shock on july 1st.

I'm legally high and I want to compare Lafreniere's career to Mercer's.

If Dougie was let go it would not be for 9 mill dollars. It would be for 9 million dollars plus the cap space from Dowling, Tatar. Bastian, Lazar. So more like 15 mill.

I'm right there with you on how i feel about Dougie. Your shot is the last to go. If he can't use his shot to generate offense on the power play we need to use his cap space elsewhere. I am down on him because we had a top 5 power play all year and then in the playoffs when it mattered most he laid an egg. Meanwhile Nemec was an animal and SHOOTS the puck.

My feeling on Dougie is simple. I felt a lot of the talk about dealing him as the season went on was kneejerk and that as long as he was giving us value, trading him would be reactionary. Then he was a no-show in the playoffs. Maybe the time hasn't come for his decline yet, but I'd rather not find out with that $9 million AAV. He was the veteran presence and locker room guy we needed to get to that next step, so hopefully he'll agree to go to Anaheim or Buffalo (lol) to whip their youngsters into fighting shape. And they've got plenty of talent they can give in return.

All the Zetterlund nostalgia has me eyerolling a bit too, he's a fine player, but he's a bit of a square peg - SJ used him on the PK in 2024 but not this year, he's maybe best used on the power play at the point but I don't think he's particularly good there, and otherwise he's just an okay top 9 forward who can maybe be used on both wings.

I loved his bowling ball energy and hated seeing him go the other way in the Timo trade, but I think people need to simmer the expectations down a bit if he were to ever return. His icetime in San Jose had been anywhere between 3-5 additional minutes on average above his usage here. It was sort of the classic case of someone having to score on a bad team, and he was one of those guys. I don't think his usage would be that significant here, he certainly wouldn't get top PP time either.

I think he is a fine middle 6 forward who clearly has a scoring touch and no problem shooting the puck on net. But even as much as I love him, I'm not expecting him to be something he isn't.

I don’t think many here think Zetterlund is some kind of elite player, but he’d definitely help.

Zetterlund looks like a 35-40 point player in the bottom-6, with some physical play, good shot and speed, which would be greatly needed. This team is starving for a player like that. He was a good player for us and I feel like he would be a good add to our lineup.

How much do you think we pay Dowling Tatar Bastian and Lazar

So you're overreacting to a 5 game sample where dougie had just come back?

"Is that someone pining?!"

Combined about 5 actually. Tatar made 1.8. Estimate down to 1 mill for 3 the other 3. I do know the cap ceiling is going way up over the next few years.

And I'm the wrong person to argue cap space with anyway because it's the biggest bunch of BS. Any GM with half a brain now can figure out a way to obtain a player they want. It's not hard. The Devils also could start the year of the cap depending on how long Kovecevic misses time.

I'm sure there will be plenty of team brokers, retained salaries and added on picks by teams to assemble rosters.

You know that you can simply buy retention and yet somehow want to dump an elite player instead of just buying a singular 3C?
