Rielly’s response to Greig was…

IMHO there’s a lot of people on the main boards that have never played hockey. If you never played the game you don't understand why you shouldn’t score an empty netter like that. Hockey’s unwritten rules are things that we grew up with but lots on the main boards haven’t.

Reilly tried to get him in the shoulder I think but he missed. I was glad that someone on the leafs let him know that the leafs won’t except that but unfortunately it’s going to cost us our best D for a bit. Greig definitely knew what he was doing and the reaction he was going to get.

What annoys me is that Marchments direct hit too McCabes was definitely every bit as dirty but only gets a $5000 fine. The standards for supplementary discipline are all over the place and it’s just ridiculous that one’s acceptable and one’s not.

Good times. No sticks, just John Wayne style. Message delivered.

Those idiots say Rielly should've challenged Greig to a fight. You think Greig is man enough to go? He would've ran like the whelped bitch he is.

There are no standards. Parros has a big wheel in his office. That's how punishment is doled out.

If Reilly had dropped his stick, punched him in the face and wrestled him to the ice, doubt we’re talking about suspension.
Times have changed yes but fighting is still part of the game. Not like the old days where you had to fight every game or fight to stay in the league, but as long as there is contact (and sometimes questionable contact) and those who disrespect the unwritten rules, there is fighting. Used wisely and in the right situation.

There would still be a massive flame war on the main board, sadly enough.

Reaves taking a shot at Parros won’t make Rielly’s case any easier

True but it's not like George will be going easy on him either way.

Is it weird that part of me wants this suspension to be egregiously bad. Like 20 games or something?

I dunno I’d just rather Reaves starts showing his toughness on the ice. He’s really turning into that “if only I was there bro” kinda guy

Yeah. Honestly if he could've taken care of Grieg, the suspension wouldn't be an issue.

I guess if you actually followed the thread and what I was responding to....

Some posters on here were suggesting that Grieg deserved and were hoping to be hurt badly for his slapper into the empty net...that he was asking for it and that he deserved perhaps a career ending injury. That was what I was replying to.

Ive said more than once that I like that Reilly responded. I dont like that he probably got himself suspended and I also think he over reacted. Some seem to be pretty triggered that some of us have this opinion. I could understand wanting to hurt someone who hurt you or your teammate especially if its a cheap shot, but for an empty netter slapper? What a waste of a suspension and probably a problem for the leafs without their number 1 dman. At least use it for sticking up for your team etc and not something so dumb......for the record...I think Reilly should be the captain and always have.
Cool story but none of that was in your post that I quoted.

More like you overstated your hand and now have to step back.

Marchand was a missed opportunity earlier as well as many other examples this year tbh.

Yep. Reaves is a waste of cap space. Might be a good locker room guy or whatever, but he's all show no go.

Parros is going to give Rielly the max no matter what so taking shots at a man with the most fragile ego on the planet isn't going to make a difference either way. At the end of the day, Parros was a plug who got his clock cleaned by Orr - a Leaf - and as a result, he's seemingly made it his life's goal to make examples of any Leaf who may cross his disciplinarian path. So piss on him.

It’s sad that there is no appeal process really and that there is no guide to how suspensions are handed out because I can think of 10+ worse plays against the Leafs in the last few years that went uncalled/unsuspended

Wasn't Spezza's suspension reduced by appeal? I imagine the team will go the same route with this one.

Morgan will come out of this quite alright. No harm done to Grieg is the main thing. NHL thinking twice about making this more of a spectacle than the press already has - this event was quite polarizing among fans and followers, best to let it start to fade to black.

And yeah, Colton Orr rules, lol.

Nobody gives a s**t what Kane thinks, he's just an unsavoury mental midget. Simply the press cherry-picking comments to stir the pot.

I don’t think the severity of the hit matters except in the context of impact on our team.

If others follow his lead to play a grittier game, a team first game (no need to invoke smart vs dumb plays here it’s presumed) then the desired effect will have been achieved.

Examining the hit to a granular level serves us nothing. It’s the playoffs or nothing and without some sort of shift, the same result, insanity and all that.

Editing from my phone.

I have two theories:

Theory 1: NHL likes to pick the incident that attracts the most attention to set a precedent. So this would've been a fine or a 1-game suspension if leafs' haters didn't make a fuss out of it in social media.

Theory 2: George Parros has no clues what he's doing (this is the factual part, not the theory part), so he bases his decision on what he reads on social media (and that is, his choice of social media).
