I have similar concerns. No one can dispute his ability on the power play. What happens the rest of the game?

On the bench like spot has been using? Do we need a better defenceman to play with him?

Rielly will no doubt need to be supported with a strong defensive dman partner to balance out the pairing and allow Rielly the freedom to push the offense as he prefers while the team is not completely vulnerable when he does.

Defense is not his strong suit, nor is physicality, but he is a dynamic offensively creative player, with a strong hockey IQ.

My bad I meant Calder.

I question your belief that he is NHL ready. And given the Leafs situation on defence with their glut of offensive and powerplay oriented defencemen (Phaneuf, Liles, Gardiner) I don't see a pressing need to rush Rielly in when there is no rush since the Leafs suck right now and his role can be filled two times over with the players they already have. I think he has more to accomplish in the junior ranks that would bode well for his long term growth as a defender.

Boston has a much better top 6 than the Leafs on defense. Yet everyone agrees that Dougie Hamilton would have likely been on the Bruins this year had there been a season. Rielly should have no trouble making the Leafs' top 6 for 2013-14. Another year in junior does him no good, he's already too good for that level.

I dont see what this has to do with the price of tea in china. Boston has their own unique situation and no one knows for certain if Hamilton is capable of winning a spot on the Bruins.

If one of Phaneuf, Liles, or Gardiner is traded I would be ok with Rielly working his way into a role on the Leafs starting next season but that probably wont happen.

I don't know why you think Rielly can't be on the same pairing as any of those guys, especially Phaneuf. And all those guys mentioned will likely be on the team past 2015, so according to you, Rielly will have to toil in the AHL until one of their contracts run up or one is traded.

That won't happen, the best players will have room made for them, Rielly will be on the team. How many expected Gardiner to make it last year? I'm sure you would have told me there is no room for him as well. And Rielly is a more polished prospect than Gardiner.

If the Leafs have any aspirations of winning and not continuing to be the worst team in the league and help out their goalies then they would be wise to NOT have 3.5 pure offensive defencemen on the team. With 2.5 pure offensive defencemen I already think thats too many and adding another rookie one will not help the Leafs improve their LAST PLACED goals against total. Rielly would be a terrible pairing for Phaneuf (while not being a PURE O-Dman) because that line would bleed goals against every single game. Gunnarsson should be with Phaneuf which would be a shutdown line. Then who does Gardiner play with ....another offensive defenceman...? Really who? Then Liles? Who?

If you want to see Seth Jones drafted (wouldnt be the end of the world) then sure lets load up the leagues worst defence with a pure offensive threat at the expense of a roster spot for a defensive defenceman. Im sure Burke and Nonis get fired too in that event.

Simmer down. Rielly's goal was ona 5 on 3 PP. He also got two second assists, one of them also on a PP. As a PP specialist, yeah, he's impressive. Every time Canada has a 5 on 3 PP, I want him on the ice, so does Spott.

so are u saying, reilly should be only used on powerplay

and not 5 on 5

That unfortunately is wrong. Now I don't know exactly how it runs with the world junior team, but I can tell you there is tons of bullcrap on the Team Canada women's club. One of my best friends played on that team and won a couple of gold medals to boot, and she's told me of the b.s. and politics that goes on.

Such as Haley Wickenheiser outright violating the "no contact sports" clause by playing in a men's league in germany. Players are not permitted to play any contact sports to be considered eligible for the national team. Yet she goes ahead and does it, and is allowed to play still.

Gillian Apps is one of the most atrocious monstrosities ever to lace up a pair of skates. She's slow, can't shoot, and can't even honestly handle a pass. Go ahead and watch some of the previous women's games. She can't handle a pass. Only reason she had one great olympics was being on a line with Wickenheiser and Piper. Yet because her daddy is Syl Apps (I think he's vice-president of the national women's team, or close to it), she's on the team. There are plenty of 18 year olds that could skate circles around her, but she's on the team because the coach has to make the "right picks" to get the job.

Those are just two examples of how the whole "the best players play" is untrue. Like I said, I don't really know the inner workings of the world juniors team, but if it's anything like the national women's team, there is bullcrap, politics, and favoritism.
sorry your friend didn't get the ice time she felt she deserved.

Inner hockey circle? Heh.

again, just stating the obvious that. anyone who has ever watched this tourney is aware of. nobidy but you is even a little surprised that coach has leaned on his vets early.

Keep trying to hilariously pat yourself on the back after being clearly proven wrong, though. a little emvarassing, really.
there you go with your little "heh" again. we know what that means. that means you've backed yourself into a corner and you know you're wrong.

canada's wjc coaches are not "notorious" for anything within your little pretend inner circle. like every other hockey team trying to win, the best players play the most.

I am sure reilly will be on team next year, unless is something horrible happens

you could have reilly play with holzer, I think that would be a good line

Sounds like conspiracy theories to me...

According to some posters, team Canada aren't really interested in winning and want to play players unnecessarily and undeservedly in return for nothing.

Not like any of these kids have anything to offer Hockey Canada in return for disproporionate and undeserved ice time. They aren't millionares yet.

Heh. the best part of you continuing to claim something happened that actually didn't, is that it makes it crystal clear that you didn't even watch the game before desperately rushing to tgis thread to embarassingly claim you were still right, after being proven wrong.
i didn't watch the game. didn't need to. i suspect you didn't watch it either.

all your excuses have been proven dead wrong. now you've created a desperate scenario in claiming there was mass panic against the germans. really, you should try to come up with something better.

actually, what you should do is admit you were wrong and give rielly the credit he deserves. i don't know why you're continuously trying to discredit him.

I did, and you are wrong. Rielly got next to no ice time in the first period, and only managed to start on the 5 on 3 in the 2nd because Hamilton got cut and was off getting repaired. Rielly factored in on the 3-1, 3-2, and 3-3 goals. He was simply given more opportunity.

I have been watching all the games and Rielly has been used on the Powerplay consistently.

He simply converted with his teammates this time and scored a deflection on the 5 on 3

reilly needs more icetime, murphy can go away

so now rielly only got ice time because hamilton got a minor cut? come on, people, that's pathetic.

why not just give rielly the credit he deserves?

The issue is goaltending, not defense. It's the goaltending not helping out the defense, not the other way around.

Defense takes plenty of the blame, too. They give up way too many quality scoring chances against, expecting the goalies to bail them out every time. It may be due to the personnel or the system (or a bit of both), we'll see whenever hockey resumes.

You would think, that after he scored a goal and two assists, that they'd continue to give him more icetime in the third. They didn't seem to though.

People read too much into this tournament. Rielly could look terrible and still turn into a major NHL star.

Ray Ferraro said the exact same thing, go watch the game and then get back to me. Until then you have no argument.

thanks for that tidbit of information.

so, we shouldn't be watching and commenting on rielly's play? seriously, just shut it down and don't bother to watch or have any opinions?

You don't watch the games anyways, and still comment on his play. ;)
