The best part is Rielly has the speed and agility to do it well. There won't be very many defenders who will beat him out wide.

Whether he has the strength to pin a streaking winger to the boards as he goes wide is the question at the pro level. It's significantly easier against boys rather than men.

I'm hoping with a #5 pick we get more than a JM Liles.

Team Canada WJC coaches are notorious for reflexively leaning on their vets, and shortchanging their rooks.

Happens every year, and isn't surprising in the least.

And, of course, the notion of icetime influencing a player's ability to impact the game is the opposite of outlandish - it's better described as stating the obvious.
notorious for reflexively leaning on their vets? what are you talking about? notorious amongst whom? you talk as though you're part of some inner hockey circle. you're really reaching here.

the best players play the most. that's it. at the wjc, the best players are often the oldest players. that makes sense.

to suggest there was mass panic against germany, and that canadian wjc coaches are notorious for anything is absolutely crazy.

just admit you were wrong and try to give the kid some credit.

Then in game 2, after his team went down 2-0 and 3-1, coach shook things up and gave Rielly more icetime, and Rielly immediately impressed.

Simmer down. Rielly's goal was ona 5 on 3 PP. He also got two second assists, one of them also on a PP. As a PP specialist, yeah, he's impressive. Every time Canada has a 5 on 3 PP, I want him on the ice, so does Spott.

Doesn't quite explain why Rielly was on the #2 PP unit.

Uh oh, someone tell the IIHF that secondary assists don't count.

Rielly made his opportunities count, that's all you can ask for. No matter how you try to spin it, Rielly had a good game.

Rielly looked good. More like is usual self. As for pinning men against boards, his upper body strength was rated pretty high at the draft combine, so it should grow with him. As a 19 year old next season he could handle it.

Good to hear. Like I said, I haven't seen much of him.

Rielly looked good out there today. He played a big role in kickstarting Canada after their atrocious start.

I think what Team Canada needs most of all is stability on the backend, someone to gain possession of the puck, quickly and efficiently break the opposing team's cycle and make a good first pass to the forwards and move the play the other way (since Canada's forward group is truly talented).

So in that sense: Rielly is the player Canada deserves, but not the one it needs right now. ;)

I'm going to say it...

Subban looks shaky. That alters Canada's attack, until Reilly takes over at the backend.Right now I am way more worried about the goaltending and for better or worse some of the other goalies are in a grove.

Agreed. I am not confident that Subban can keep us alive against the Americans or Russians. I feel more comfortable in Patterson.

That unfortunately is wrong. Now I don't know exactly how it runs with the world junior team, but I can tell you there is tons of bullcrap on the Team Canada women's club. One of my best friends played on that team and won a couple of gold medals to boot, and she's told me of the b.s. and politics that goes on.

Such as Haley Wickenheiser outright violating the "no contact sports" clause by playing in a men's league in germany. Players are not permitted to play any contact sports to be considered eligible for the national team. Yet she goes ahead and does it, and is allowed to play still.

Gillian Apps is one of the most atrocious monstrosities ever to lace up a pair of skates. She's slow, can't shoot, and can't even honestly handle a pass. Go ahead and watch some of the previous women's games. She can't handle a pass. Only reason she had one great olympics was being on a line with Wickenheiser and Piper. Yet because her daddy is Syl Apps (I think he's vice-president of the national women's team, or close to it), she's on the team. There are plenty of 18 year olds that could skate circles around her, but she's on the team because the coach has to make the "right picks" to get the job.

Those are just two examples of how the whole "the best players play" is untrue. Like I said, I don't really know the inner workings of the world juniors team, but if it's anything like the national women's team, there is bullcrap, politics, and favoritism.

I have similar concerns. No one can dispute his ability on the power play. What happens the rest of the game?

On the bench like spot has been using? Do we need a better defenceman to play with him?

Reinhart and Rielly are the only 2012 drafted defenders on the team, both 18.

Shouldn't be surprising that the 2011 draftees are counted on more.

Next year Rielly and Reinhart probably get the benefit of the doubt and immediate ice-time.

I don't think Reilly will be made available to Team Canada next year.

It will be up to guys like Pouliot, Dumba and Finn next year. Reilly and Reinhart will be in the NHL, IMO.

Yeah, if there is an NHL season next year, I don't see how the Leafs can afford to let Rielly go.

He's just too good of a player to struggle to transition into the NHL. He might get less ice time in his first year in the NHL but he's not going to go back to the WJC.

It would be ashame if the Leafs don't allow him back to junior next year (on a new WHL TEAM)

He needs a chance to be a bigger part of a talented team like Team Canada and be counted upon to lead at both ends of the ice rather than just a Powerplay.

I wish some people would watch his play at both end of the ice, instead worrying about old cliches on defensive abilities of most offensive defensemen. Maybe we should ask the media to start touting him as a two way defender to put some minds at ease, and save them from having to form their own opinions.

Inner hockey circle? Heh.

again, just stating the obvious that. anyone who has ever watched this tourney is aware of. nobidy but you is even a little surprised that coach has leaned on his vets early.

Keep trying to hilariously pat yourself on the back after being clearly proven wrong, though. a little emvarassing, really.

No the real shame would be to hold back an NHL ready player who can help your team and challenge for the Calder trophy just so he can have a bigger role on the WJC team.

edit: Calder trophy*

I agree, nithing unusually different abiut his play this game....just more opportunity to show his stuff.

I'll ignore your silly attempt to dismiss the three points, and just poin out that even getting full pp time was a bigger opportunity than coach gave him in game one.

absolutely wrong. rielly got more ice time because he was better.

all these excuses that people threw out there have been proven dead wrong. nothing in his environment has changed.

this directly proves that its all up to rielly. it proves that he deserves full credit for his great game today. it proves your excuses were simply wrong. its absurd that you're trying to take credit away from him.

you were told that these were foolish excuses, and his great play today proves it.

Heh. the best part of you continuing to claim something happened that actually didn't, is that it makes it crystal clear that you didn't even watch the game before desperately rushing to tgis thread to embarassingly claim you were still right, after being proven wrong.

Huh?
