he was absolutely electric. even if it was one of those acquire a star player on the downside of their career trades it was still awesome to have him. bure was one of my favorite players in the NHL around that time, along with fleury lol. bure scored 12 goals in his first 12 games with us in the season we traded for him. followed that with one last season of 19 goals in 39 games. overall he scored 31 goals in 51 games with us. 50 goal pace per 82 games.

I remember being so disappointed in 19 goals in 39 games. He was usually better than that but Jesus, that's a good output.

I remember being at his final game when he took the knee on knee and watching him trying to crawl over the bench, I said to my friend "His career is over" and unfortunately I was right. One of my favorite players, wish we got to see him for a few more seasons in NY.

Edge, what do you think happened during Sather's first years before the lockout?

When he came in the talk was bringing in a culture of developing our own, but also having the resources to go get some high-end players. Instead, he spent like a drunken sailor, and we were just a mess until Hank and Jagr.

The edict from Dolan was to make the playoffs.

Sather was being a dutiful employee and doing the owners bidding

Failed miserably at it.

Funny you mention Bure and Fleury. I had an “Ice Kings” poster with both of them, Cujo, Kariya, Sundin, Broduer, Blake and Jagr. Still have it at my parents’ place actually lol.

I remember thinking it was a huge mistake giving up on Filip Novak, who at the time, was just about our only decent prospect.

Is Panarin a better player than Bure if he's the player he was last year? I feel like he's way more well rounded but obviously not as good of a goal scorer.
Bure was something else. Today’s closest comparison would be McDavid — but Bure’s acceleration was even better than McDavid’s. Bure also had a bit of a mean streak and could be a bit dirty if irked (look up the “mother of all elbows” clip). The most entertaining players I’ve seen during my lifetime have probably been Bure, McDavid, OV. Sid is generational and effective but doesn’t really captivate me the way those three do. Every time Bure got the puck the crowd would hold its breath.

Bure was electric as a Ranger. But his knees were ticking bombs and everyone knew there wasn't much time left.

Novak seemed like a good kid, and one of our only viable prospects...but him plus a 1st plus a garbage defenseman for a season and a half of Bure (despite the injury shortened final season) is a deal you make every chance you get.

I think it was a couple of weeks before the trade that Ulanov speared someone in the gut/jewels right after a whistle, and I was done with him. There's "chippy, pesky, hard-nosed play," and there's "dirty play that doesn't belong in the NHL." We had a pretty garbage defense, but I would have rather had Purinton, Karpa, McKenna, et al on the ice than Ulanov. I was PUMPED that we could onload him in any deal at all.

Yeah the Rangers stunk back than but Bure was a joy to watch in a Ranger unie. Here's a highlight package of Bure as a Ranger. While watching, alot of Nedved, Lindros, Fleury, Rucinsky, Poti are involved in alot of Bure's goals. One thing about Bure while watching these video is even with all the injuries, Bure's speed was still breathtaking to watch and what soft hands. Man oh man...was he good.

Looking at that roster...was the '02 season the one where Jeff Toms had a hat trick? =P

Oh, man...Roman Lyashenko. There were a bunch of rumors that he was murdered and it was staged to look like a suicide. Crazy.

And I have to say it was a treat to watch Blackburn develop at such a young age. He may have not been a "star in the making," but he looked like a "career NHLer in the making."

The thing about Bure is that he was so much more than just speed and the quick hands. He had pretty much a rocket of a shot. He also took no flak. I always relate this, but prior to all of his injuries, Shane Churla was a pretty good player and a fearsome body checker. He and the rest of the Stars were pretty much running him all game long. And the Stars were a pretty dirty team at that time. Bure gave some back to Hatcher. But when it came to Churla, he lined him up and absolutely delivered an elbow that would have made Bryan Marchment proud. That was the beginning of the end for Churla.

"Electric" and I thought exactly about his first 10 (you had 12) games. We're on the same wavelength.

Rucinsky - Lindros - Bure. What a line. Couldn't believe they let Rucinsky go!

The day the Rangers traded for Bure, they played Vancouver. My brother and I were up in the eyebrow with Sather, Maloney and Messier (he had a wrist injury) doing the "GM for a day" thing. Sather asked me what I thought about the Bure trade. I wasn't in love with it. I said it was okay, but wished we could get Malhotra back, whom we traded in a separate deal.

Bure in his prime was pure electricity.

Any time he was on the ice you could literally feel the tension rising. His speed and hands were that good.
Aside from Gretzky, the only players (through today) that I felt like that about were him and Lindros. Literally you felt like something could happen at any second.

Yah...Bure had a howitzer of a shot and could snipe corners with the best players in history. With 779 points(437-342) in 702 games and in his 12 seasons only playing more than 65 games 8 times, you have to think had Bure been even somewhat healthy and played 14-15 somewhat full seasons, he'd have scored over 700+ goals and 1500+ points when all was said and done.

Just a damn shame that he was so injury prone. Quite possibly the most exciting player I have ever seen. The only ones I've seen with my own eyeballs that even approach Bure are McDavid and MacKinnon.

I wished they traded Malhotra for Bure in 1998 instead!

As I said in a different post, for my money aside from Gretzky Bure and a healthy Lindros were the two most exciting players that I ever saw. Would say more so than McDavid and MacKinnon.

Funny but Gretzky was never all that exciting to me to actually watch. I'm not taking anything away from his enormous skill level but he never got me to jump out of my seat alot. Personally, I thought Messier was more exciting to watch than the Great One. Lindros? yeah I'd buy him as he was more exciting to me to watch than Gretzky.

McDavid and MacKinnon tho with their speed, deft hands, great shots and deking ability get me up out of my couch seat more than anyone tho and remind me the most of how Bure used to play.

Aside from Gretzky, the only players (through today) that I felt like that about were him and Gretzky. Literally you felt like something could happen at any second.

And even Gretzky (and maybe Lemieux) made it feel like it was happening in slow motion at times. With them, you could often see it coming, but you knew your guys were helpless to prevent them from scoring.

With Bure, you often felt like it would happen before you even realized you were in trouble. That you'd blink and miss him burying one in the net. It was like watching a viper strike. You were dead before you knew you were even under attack.

Maybe the closest I can compare him to right now is McDavid because of his speed and hands.
