Yes, but they can’t trade him before he signs a new deal or the other negotiates one.

he’s already under contract for next season so yes they can trade him.

You have to deal him if he's stuck on waiting until he has control
Absolutely. If he isn’t signing an extension by mid June then they MUST trade him before July 1.

Exactly.

The bruins are a contender every season because management insists they take team friendly deals. If not they get shipped out. End of story.

it’s time for the leafs to stop coddling players.

Have you seen Pasta's new deal?

Looks like he talked to the Core Four of the Leafs and isn't following that outdated Bruins formula.

No thanks to ROR.

Getting sick and tired of these retirement "Club Med" and "All you need is your flip flops to come and play with us!" deals.

If you lose Matthews and Marner you'll want ROR even at 7mx2, we have JT may as well do something.

He isn't coming back. I just see him on the decline already.

We already have Tavares to worry about when it comes to that.

I agree, I just imagine we'll be getting other teams 1sts for the 3 and maybe some throw in's for cap. We'll probably retain on Matthews and Marner as well to get the better return. Someone like ROR may be a 2 year option lining up with JT just to make it interesting.

I have to admit, it was pretty genius of Matthews to get the no movement clause by June 30. Gives him all the negotiating power.

The only way you’re getting a top 5 pick in this draft (excluding #1) and a top nhl ready prospect or rookie is if a matthews contract is signed or atleast agreed upon by matthews. No extension in place and your getting more quantity then quality

Could ink it prior. There is nothing stopping them from working it out in advance.
I guess sign it and post date it.. but cant file it until the first..

That is his posturing.. if he is pulling the not negotiating until the first.. then f*** it. Get the three of them in the room.. lay it out there and tell them to get back to you within 24hrs

If they say no or dont respond explore trades.. run the business

This is why his agent works differently than most and why it's hard to truly predict what Matthews wants.

I can see his agent coming with a ridiculously high offer if Matthews wants out.

If that's the case, you have to trade him.

The Bruin formula is a joke. Outside of Krejci/Bergeron this year, everyone got paid as they should have and then outperformed their contract, no one took less than they should have, they just pretend they did.

If he wasn't willing to re-sign here and Anaheim wanted to take a step forward with having Mintyukov, Zegras, Terry and McTavish etc...and would re-sign with the Ducks...

Would we be able to just do Matthews for 2nd overall, Fantilli?
That would make no sense for the Leafs. Even in an off year Matty scored at a 95pt clip At this point Fantilli and Carlson are much more likely to top out at Laine, Eichel, Reinhart at best and never get a sniff of an MVP award, never mind the possible Patrick or Puljujarvi outcomes. If the Ducks could resign him their retool advances by years and Matthews will put butts in the stands. But Fantilli would be the main high value piece I think and as others have mentioned, there needs to be money coming back.

I think California would be attractive to Matthews and the key is finding a place he is likely to re-sign at. The Ducks brain trust might not have interest simply based on the depth of the rest of their organization If they see their system as weak then immediate gratification makes no sense although the quick success of the Knights and Kraken would suggest that building with high draft picks year after year is not a requirement.

Key word being “outperformed”. That’s means it’s a team friendly contract. Im not a fan of the B’s but their business model has been one of the best in the NHL for some time now.

A team-friendly contract is not when you outperform your contract, it is when you sign for less than you are worth.

If it is what you think, there are hundreds of team-friendly contracts in the league.

He has a no trade come July 1st. He doesn’t have to provide them with any trade list.
I would be asking his agent for 10- or 12 places that might interest him as soon as I got his number. It tells him the club is serious but also gives him input over a landing spot if he is in fact, all about the Benjamins. Particularly if they have the stones to say "here is our hard number". I wonder if that's how the last deal was cut.
