Return for Matthews in a trade

I wouldn’t be paying him 12 million a year that is for sure. I’m sure we could get something for him in a trade even if he only has a year left.

12 million is below the bare minimum of what he would get, but yeah I don't see what we would be getting that would be worth trading him for.

No one on Tampa outplayed our core players in the 2nd series.

Marner 11 points, Matthews 9, Rielly 8, Tavares and Nylander 7.

Their highest scorers were Kucherov and Cirelli with 6 points, Stamkos and Point had 4 points

When Justin Holl wasn't on the ice we outscored Tampa 19-6.
You realize the majority of these points came in the 7-2 game?

Why not take away that game?

Good for the big 5, they are paid nearly 50 million, I'd expect a bit of production.

Btw where were they in Florida?

Take away that game, then take away the 7-2 game for Tampa.

Bobrovsky is rolling over the Hurricanes right now as we speak, we ran into an epic goaltending performance from a two time Vexzina trophy winner, and Matthews got hurt in game 3 which is the only reason he didn't put up any more points

Btw, I realize they underachieved in that series and I couldn't care less if Marner or Tavares never play here again, same with Nylander but to a lesser extent because he's cheaper and I still think hasn't reached his full potential as a two-way player.

And the other 6 years? Lmfao

Mackinnon - 100pts in 77gp
McDavid - 75pts in 49gp
Drai 77 pts in 49gp
Matthews 44pts in 50gp

oh and Nylander has 40 poins and 17 goals to Matthews 22 goals, should we give Matthews 13-14 or 15???

Cool. How many years before we got Matthews were we not in the playoffs? How many years after Sundin left, were we looking for a #1 centre? How many teams do you think would take Matthews off of our hands?
If Shanahan goes out and acquires Nonis/Burke to run the Leafs draft going forward then I understand your concern.

The Bruin formula is a joke. Outside of Krejci/Bergeron this year, everyone got paid as they should have and then outperformed their contract, no one took less than they should have, they just pretend they did.
So basically the complete opposite of what the Leafs did by paying the core 4 like they won a Stanley Cup but never performing to the contract.

It’s just so amazing how so many can be so critical of the of other 3, and be so forgiving of this guy. It’s 100% based on an emotional want, and 0% based in any logic at all.

They’ve all underperformed relative to their stature in the playoffs. Badly and consistently.

People argue Matthews is is a top 3 talent, and he may be, but if people are actually able to be honest with themselves, the amount of times you point to him at the end of of playoff games and say “that was a performance of one of the best players in world” nearly as often as a top 3 player in the world should.

Not even close.

Not even close to close.

Not anywhere remotely near it. You’re only lying to yourself.

But he gets an eternal pass, from some.

Our pay is completely broken when it comes to PO performance. That's known

And yet Matthews will want a raise after 7 years of failure.

If Shanahan doesn't put his foot down, we will see that the problems started from the top down (Shanahan's weakness to Dubas to Keefe)

They have to make up their mind. Is it broken or is it not? Are they signing or are they going to play games with us after getting favorable treatment off the bat. They were given great deals, are they going to give us some respect and be reasonable? If not, they should just go F off. That's how I feel.

We can dream about prying away that 2nd overall from Anaheim all we want. It's worth a lot itself. Fantilli's freshman season at Michigan just after turning 18 is a pretty rare accomplishment. It's Jack Eichel territory.

I doubt the Ducks do it, but then again who knows?

It would honestly be a great move here opening up 11+ million in cap.

Funny thing about the Mathew’s situation is he hasn’t done anything to deserve a raise in pay but will still get it. I wouldn’t pay him a penny more than what he’s getting.

That was boy wonders contract negotiation with him.
This was Dubas and Shanahans fault 100%. They handed the keys to the car to kids who hadn’t accomplished anything. The leafs should have NEVER given Matthews only a 5 year contract With a NMC in year 5! Just dumb.

Fantilli would be a Matthews replacement. Throw in some added player depth and you’d have a deal.

I agree. You put a rookie GM, in the 30 year old range the ability to negotiate these contracts. Doesn't seem all that savy now does it? Lou would have been far better for the job. All the Lou haters will be jumping on here now, Guarantee we don't sign Tavares if Lou was in charge.

Any trade for Matthews has to be on the level of Lindros to Philadelphia for a future Peter Forsberg calibre player. But knowing this organization they'll pull a Joe Thornton to San Jose level deal.

Agree that Lou would have negotiated better deals. And also agree he wouldn't have signed Tavares, which in hindsight would have been a good decision.

Considering he has only 1 year left, and probably won't sign with the team he's traded to, we would probably only get a couple 1st round picks and some either washed,up or rookie talent. 8t eould hav3 to be a team that thinks it can win the cup next year. If he had 3 years left we could prob get the moon.

Mathews and boston 28th to arizona
For
Keller crouse and 6 th overall and a third round pick

Arizona gets their big star to get them on the way to finding a new home in arizona
A big star local boy could sway some city officials to change their mind

I just don't get why he's getting a raise after a mediocre season and a horrible 2nd round after 6 years of failure. He already got paid, just ask him straight up "what's more important, making maximum dollar or winning?" If he says maximum dollar ship him out of here.
Hes already stated hes not talking contract before July 1st....what does that tell you? JT did the same thing in NY

We don't want to start crapping on the players if they don't want to remain. That's just a bad business plan and the stench would linger for years. People need to understand that the players are at some point free to do whatever they like. If they don't want to be here they fulfill their contractual obligation and choose their destination. If management is uncomfortable with the possibility of that outcome their options are to allow them to walk at the ends of the deals or trade them beforehand and recoup what they can on the asset.
2 options, pick one and live with the consequences.
Yep, time to trade him..
