the bolded above is bullshit....the hart candidate should make the players around him better, we shouldnt need to strome for panarin to put up points.....crosby has played with terrible linemates for years at times

This Panarin/Strome chemistry thing must be more off ice at this point, because I just don’t see it on ice. More often than not it’s just waiting for Panarin to make a brilliant play and Strome is along for the ride. Strome has turned into a glider like he’s a high skill player who can get away with it, but he’s not. He doesn’t move his feet, and that is part of the reason he takes a lot of stick infraction penalties. In fact, the Panarin/Strome partnership seems to be more of a detriment to the team now. Rip the Strome bandaid off and use the cap on someone else like Copp. Panarin will get over it and still love to play hockey…and most importantly, as you’ve mentioned, make whoever is on his line a better player.

It's one game but Copp kind of highlights all the things missing from Strome's game. I have always been a Strome supporter but it is pretty clear to me that Copp is the more valuable player.

Fit (re-the clubs strengths and weaknesses) and likely cost (5 million vs 6+ million) also matter.

If our first line center was Barkov or Kopitar, I'd be more inclined to want Strome. But Mika, despite his great defensive play with his stick, is far from a hard nosed player.

Also Savant is right... this is based on what we know about each player right now.

I'd like to see Gallant experiment a bit to see where Copp fits with this group.

Too soon to say. Strome no, but lets see how Copp plays. I hope he plays well and we do sign him for a reasonable contract though.
Rangers would be a major contender if they replace Strome with a legit 2C and re-sign Copp to term for the third line (and add a middling LHD before next deadline)

And Im a Devils fan saying that. You guys do not need Strome at all, Im sure Panarin will live

Which one do you take? Copp is an upgrade over Strome. Resign him
Prob neither. Def not Strome, esp since he wanted to do us a favor at multiple years near 6 per and w/nmc. Eff that big time w/no grease. Borderline net plus good, overrated, and has been sucking the cap air and mins away from more deserving youth. DO NOT WANT, AND IF BREADMAN DOESN'T LIKE IT, TOO BAD.

Copp, like others said, would like to see and not long term otherwise maybe, but reality is THERE IS NO $$$$
FOR ANYBODY
Are we going to not sign 5 guys like McKegg and hope to scrape up scratch for Copp?

I'm not going to vote, but I don't want to keep Strome. He was found money with that trade, but has outstayed his welcome. Just let him go before it turns really ugly, like Staal / Girardi type of ugly.

This was an easy Copp vote for me, but 80 to 2 is overwhelming. Way more overwhelming than what I expected, which was maybe 60/40 split in favor of Copp.

Ryan Strome shouldn’t be resigned under any circumstances. I mean, maybe if he wins the Conn Smythe or something.

Who knows on Copp. He’s the right player type for the middle six I think. Seems to want to be here. How much will he cost?

If Winnipeg are uncomfortable, why will the Rangers be more comfortable? Need to think about this stuff
Winnipeg has Scheifele and PLD centering the top 2 lines, and Lowry centering the 3rd line. They have Wheeler, Connor and Ehlers as wingers in the top 6.

So they either have to play him as a top 6 winger, or a center or winger on the 3rd line. It doesn't make sense paying him 5 mil per year to play on the 3rd line, and I imagine they want to see what Perfetti can do in the top 6 at some point.

We have an opening coming up at 2C. Copp is likely a better option there than Strome.

Staple spoke to Copp’s father Andy.

Andrew knew his days in Winnipeg were numbered from early on this season. The Jets went long on a contract for RFA defenseman Neal Pionk last summer, for four years at $5.875-million per; the next day Copp signed a one-year, $3.64-million deal that walked him right up to unrestricted free agency this coming offseason.

“I know he was a little disappointed by that,” Andy said. “There was a feeling that he wanted a little more from Winnipeg after six years there, so we knew that there’d be something different coming along at some point. We’d heard about the Rangers for a couple months, that they were one of the teams interested. And Jacob’s been in Andrew’s ear for a while now talking about how the Rangers play and what it’s like to be there.”

Strome reminds me of a lesser version of Mike Ribeiro.

He is just skilled enough to where you can put him with star players and he will be able to keep pace and keep them happy. If you are a GM and you don't have any other options you can slot him into your top 6 knowing he will likely put up good enough numbers that you have plausible deniability when your owner or your fanbase starts to ask why you have such a bad player in your top 6. However, if you are a team actually competing for a championship you really don't want Strome within 50 mile radius of your practice facility or arena.

One guy is better offensively, the other defensively. Pick your poison i guess, if i had it my way we would have picked and developed a decent center in the last few drafts or traded for a young center that might be able to slide in there now on an entry level deal. Its what ive been most disappointed about every draft day since the letter. Paying either of these guys 5 or 6 mill on a long term deal isnt ideal.

let Strome walk imo. is Copp a 5-6mm guy i don't know. we sure did give up more than ryan spooner for him. does that matter, i don't know. we got assets for a C. interesting how this wil play out.

I would re-sign Copp, he’s much more versatile, better defensively, and on faceoffs. And smarter. Doesn’t take the dumb penalties Strome does.

Strome is a better playmaker/passer and he’s already established here, and the fact that Panarin loves playing with him is important as well. We moved Panarin best friend on the team in Buch, and he’s played more careless this season. Might be a factor might not be but if Strome is moved Panarin becomes even more upset. Tough decision but I’m sure he can hopefully understand

4.5 x 6 I’ve seen discussed a lot for Copp and I think that’s fair, I would do it.

Strome I have no idea on what he gets. I could see a 3 year deal similar to Reinhart’s maybe? 5.5-6 million for 3 years would be minimum and even then I’m not comfortable with that and going forward with him as our 2C. But at the same time if we acquire Copp I don’t want him as our 2C solution either. More as our elite 3C similar to the Jordan Staal/Yanni Gourde types that can carry the 3rd line and move around to any line when we have injuries or want to shake things up. Also to take defensive pressure off Zib and go up against top lines instead

Either way our 2C spot is still a concern

This is where winning those lotteries worked against us. If we didn't get 1st overall in 2020, we could have drafted Lundell or Holloway. If we don't win the lottery in 2019, maybe we get Zegras.

Trading for a young center with that kind of upside is much easier said than done.

Can we let Copp play a full game at center first.

Dear lord. Way too early for this.
Yes, and it "might be". So, instead of adding your 2 cents, why didn't you just say NOTHING? Even now, I am guilty. How would you like it if someone critiqued your thread because you were "curious" and thought you had something to add here? Jeez.

Right, but that doesn’t mean that they automatically should just add Copp because of it. There is a lot of different ways that this can go. Copp’s range of outcomes is anywhere from 2C to winger with concussion risk. Need to put a pin in this conversation for now. There isn’t enough Copp as a Ranger sample size.
There might not be enough CAP for COPP. lol.

It's far too early to say with Copp. There is a lot to like in his game and he should bring some things we are missing in the forward corps, but let's see how he meshes over the rest of the season.

I know some people think it's easy to play with a talent like Panarin and put up points. That's not always the case. We thought we could slot just about anyone next to Jagr, but then we saw some players worked and some players didn't. You still need to find the right players that can feed off of each other.

That being said, my opinion has been for a while that this team is not winning anything with Strome at 2C. We should be moving on regardless of Copp's status.

I have no faith in this team making the right selection in the draft when it comes to centers. In 2010 we needed centers, drafted McIlrath instead of Tarasenko.

2017, Lias Andersson with Necas, Suzuki on the board

2021 we could have selected a center, grabbed Othmann (which may very well end up working out.)

Who’s to say we would have selected Zegras or Lundell? This organization had plenty of draft capital (or, actual players such as Buchnevich, etc) to move up had they thought there was a game breaking talent available.

To be honest, I can see Kakko developing into a shutdown center in 2-3 years if he can improve his skating and settle into the NHL game. The defensive instincts are there.

On this thread - Ryan Strome isn’t someone you can win a cup with in my mind. Takes lazy penalties, slams his stick against the boards, glides, etc.
