I'm fine with Jimmy coming back next year. However I am not fine with not getting anything for him. 1st, 2nd, 3rd or even a prospect. Not getting anything is silly, as Jimmy isn't going to help us reach the playoffs this year anyway, and we can suck it up with Bernier and our AHL goalies the rest of the way. Same goes for Nyquist, although I prefer we trade him, and don't bring him back. I have a feeling he will be the 40 pt player he has been the past 2 seasons, and this year is an outlier, because he is playing for his first UFA deal. Even on a good deal, I am not that excited about him being back, as we know what he brings, and it doesn't help us win, so him getting older, doesn't seem like a good recipe to fix that.

I think there can be value in not settling, especially if the only offer we get is a late 3rd. Look, if you let it out that you want a 1st for a certain asset and settle for a late 3rd every time teams aren’t going to take your ask very seriously in future negotiations. If other teams know you’re willing to settle for a significantly less than your expected value it will that much harder to get your value next time. Sometimes you have to dig in and say no, this is the value I need.

Now, this is a balancing act as we are rebuilding and need more picks. It doesn’t need to be the approach 100% of the time but you have to be willing to stick to your guns sometimes.

I could settle for a 2nd + with one of them but the question is who? Nyquist seems like the better bet to actually return a 1st but seems unlikely to accept a short term contract. If you dig in on your ask there is risk you get nothing and he walks. With Howard, it seems more unlikely that a 1st is offered but he is less likely to walk as a UFA; we could probably bring him back on a 1 or 2 year contract at 4 mill/per (or whatever) and flip him a year or two from now.

Should have never made the ask public especially with the notion that teams are prob not going to pay it

On Gustav Nyquist...

For a while there it looked like the Wings may bring him back, but now I am hearing the Capitals have essentially targeted Nyquist....

I would love to get Nyqvist on the Capitals. Plays well every time I watch the Wings. Not sure they could afford him. :(

I would like to get Howard in Toronto. He would be a big upgrade.

Bruins desperately looking for a RWer. I wonder if the Redwings would take Zboril for him to put on their LHD. Former 1st Rounder ready for the NHL.

On HNIC last night they said Holland has approached Nyquist about a list of teams he'll accept a trade too so this could pick up here.

I think the caps could do it. They have their picks right? Does Bowey have much value anymore? I doubt they would want to give up Samsonov or Alexeyev but after that they have some ok pieces that could go with a pick.

I doubt the wings are going to take an older prospect who is realistically what, Bostons 6 or 7th best prospect? Zboril could maybe be a guy added to a second round pick or something along those lines, but I highly doubt that trade happens straight up

Howard is quietly having one of the better seasons goalie-wise. He’s worth a 1st, don’t know if they will be able to get it since there probably aren’t a ton of teams bidding against each other.

Flames should just pay it, they’re a goalie away from being a pretty tough out. I remember their fans laughing at the thought of giving up anything of value for MAF. If you don’t want to pay the price for a good goalie you end up with a Mike Smith.
