Question: we are the only team to give Leonard the most money after next year? 5 yrs versus 4yrs from other teams?

Can we do a sign and trade in the off-season and get something back?

Thanks

I'm just a casual Raptors fan but 'best player in team history'? Isn't Carter still considered the best?
Kawhi is quite a bit better than Vince. He's worth the price of admission just to watch his elite 2-way play. It's a good day to be a Raps fan.

He was referring to DeRozan being the best Raptor in team history. Nothing to do with Kwahi.

Lowry
Green
Kawhi
Ibaka
JV

Pretty balanced starting 5 in terms of Off/Def. This and the Tavares signing never want to rush through a summer but...

Sucks to see how harsh the business aspect of this game is, and I feel bad (as much as I can for someone making 30m a year in a tax-free state) for DeRozan and how it all played out after he was truly the first-star Raptor to really embrace this city. But, this team wasn't going to take the next step going the same direction. Kawhi is the perfect gamble, he either takes us to that next level (and hopefully resigns) or he leaves setting up the teardown and rebuild with Lowry and Ibaka gone in 2020. It is a good all-in play and the type of harsh moves you have to make. I wish DeRozan success in San Antonio, while he may not be the best player the Raptors have had (Vince and Bosh were better at their peaks), he leaves the greatest Raptor of all time for how he embraced the city and how he and Kyle led us to the most success we've had. As pissed off as he is at Masai, I can't wait for the first home game when he comes back, so we can show him how much we appreciated him as a player and person.

Rank these players in their primes:

Harden
Carter
T-Mac
Durant
Curry
Leonard
Duncan
Hakeem
Westbrook

Just curious what people think.

Don't really understand the criticism for the trade. I liked DD but this is a great gamble to take. I really like Danny Green too.

Pretty great summer for the City of Toronto.

Serge is pretty awful, he probably won't be any better this year. The Serge of the Thunder is long gone. Kawhi is a terrific addition but if he pretty much quit on one of the best franchises in the NBA you have to wonder what his attitude is like moving forward.

I think the criticism comes from the fact DeRozan really embraced being a Raptor, which has not been common among Americans in regards to the NBA and to a lesser extent the MLB, it hasn't been an issue with the Leafs (only disgruntled American I can remember is Schneider), while Kawhi comes off as wanting nothing to do with us. I also think some fans are having trouble accepting that this core couldn't do it, and that we needed a bold gamble. If Kawhi works, we may have a legit contender, if he fails and wants out, we clear cap space earlier and can start thinking about life after Kyle and Ibaka.

I will probably put McGrady in last even though he was extremely talented but retiring at 33 his only team success being an afterthought on San Antonio he's last.

Durant
Duncan
Hakeem
Curry
Leonard
Harden
Westbrook
Carter
McGrady

Westbrook/Harden is difficult. I can put Curry ahead of Hakeem if he wins another couple titles. Hard to decide between players that have always had the ball in their hands as compared to others like Hakeem/Duncan. Leonard is a terrific player he still has a lot more to prove.

It's a tough trade because a lot of fans are attached to Demar, the person and what he represented.....unfortunately, from the basketball side of things:

1) Your not winning anything with Demar as your best player
2) Your not getting a player better than Demar in the context of our marketplace with any immediacy- not that those players are readily available to begin with, nor do we really have the capspace to accommodate said player.
3) If you want to get a player that can become better than Demar, your going to have to draft and develop that player internally...which probably means, moving on from Demar.

Now, if your a player fan (and these do exist in star-driven leagues...like basketball and soccer), you might be disappointed. But the reality is, winning with Demar, is realistically, impractical.

I've never been the biggest fan of Demar's game. He's made strides, but he's still relatively inefficient in any motion offense (and I can buy the argument he's shouldering too much burden to begin with as the #1 option, and someone who is relied upon too heavily to break down defenses)...and because his defense has always been underwhelming since the day he was drafted.

I like this move because it provides 2 avenues moving forward:

1) Kahwi....and the hope he resigns
2) The opportunity to retool/rebuild, which I concede is a necessity if you want to at least try to build something that can win in today's modern NBA.

Some other promising notes:

- We only lost 1 of Poeltl (between OG, Pascal, and Yak)...and I'd probably rank Yak #3 on that list. OG is promising, but I think Pascal is the guy I personally wouldn't have been comfortable moving for a rental.

- Kahwi is a superstar level player to me, I'd put him comfortably in the top 3-5 and easily, the best perimeter defender/best Lebron stopper (if that matters) in today's NBA.

Just have to hope to squeeze the last bit of Serge out as we hope Siakam can take another step and transition into that role.

I understand there are a lot of angles to the trade its by no means a given that Kawhi will pan out as many optimists like myself see it. Its the first day of the trade, things should be clearer by training camp whos to say Masai doesnt make another move between now and then.

Raps also got $5M. late Wednesday that the Spurs sent $5 million in cash to the Raptors as part of the deal, which is meant to cover the tax hit linked to Leonard's trade kicker.

Guess that’s ok as well.

Circling back around to the trade for a minute, the more I think about it, the less I'm even concerned if Kawhi leaves. People have been saying for a couple years now that the Raptors were not built for post-season success. They've even fingered DeMar as the chief culprit behind this. So if this team doesn't work out and Kawhi bolts, they head into the 2019 off-season:

  • with $30m coming off the books in Kawhi and Green
  • In a position to probably still be able to spin Lowry into something worthwhile
  • Potentially able to get some value for JV as long as he keeps showing some of his growth from last year
  • With Ibaka as the only really bad contract on the books, and even then it's only for next year where his awfulness could even be an asset if the team tries to tank
  • With the only significant young loss off the roster to try this trade being Poeltl, who as much as I liked him, had some of his flaws exposed in the playoffs and was easily the most replaceable/least damaging loss that we could've had out of the young guys (OG, Siakam, Wright are all better parts to keep)
  • Best case regarding the draft pick: the Raps finish atop the east and sacrifice a 1st in the trade that is probably 25+. Worse case: Leonard goes full Alonzo Mourning, demands to be re-routed in trade, the sell-off starts early and the tanking 2018-19 Raptors have their now-valuable pick protected and instead lose a pair of seconds (presumably for the 2019 and 2020 drafts). So no matter how the team's future shakes down, the picks sacrificed amount to extreme lottery tickets to even get a half-decent rotation player. It's not like this costs the team anything significant in terms of draft capital either way.
So realistically the optimal scenario here is that the Raptors are the best team in teh east and Kawhi gets a good experience that entices him to stay like George did in OKC.

Worst case is that a team that has perennially not been able to get over the hump for the last 5 years is in about as good of a spot as it could be to rebuild itself in short order and go right back to competing within a few years.
The thing is we shouldn't care about cap money, no one wants to come here who is a dd+ type player it is WHT it is. Yes rebuild but now we have to depend on that draft pick to be anotrher dd and be loyal to us but after this trade and who we are I think it's like the other stars we have a had. Worse case is we are mid tier team, leanard leaves and we rebuild but become who we have been since mighty mouse and he leaves.
