Raptors Discussion: REPORT: Raptors trade DeRozan, Poeltl, Protected 1st to Spurs for Leonard, Green

Don't really understand the criticism for the trade. I liked DD but this is a great gamble to take. I really like Danny Green too.

Pretty great summer for the City of Toronto.

I'm sad that Derozan is gone, but not mad. I'm sad because he was everything you want in a player: loved Toronto, great in the community, worked hard every summer.

But I'm not mad because this deal is 100% excellent for the Raptors. The only downside is if Kawhi walks, which means that you start the rebuild 1 or 2 years earlier than you would have otherwise. (And didn't lose any of OG/Siakam/Fred/Wright).

But fans are emotional and conflating Demar the person with Demar the player.

Big fan of the deal. Demar was a good player here, but not someone you could win a championship when you rely on him as one of your star players. Kawhi immediately becomes far and away the best player in the conference, and joins a team with a very good chance of making the finals this year. People need to understand that our window was closing soon anyways given our contract situations. It's much better to go all in and get a top 3-5 player as a contender in a league where superstars make all the difference than it is to stay put with a proven playoff failure because of sentimental reasons. Demar will be missed but this is a win for the franchise.

I will probably put McGrady in last even though he was extremely talented but retiring at 33 his only team success being an afterthought on San Antonio he's last.

Durant
Duncan
Hakeem
Curry
Leonard
Harden
Westbrook
Carter
McGrady

Westbrook/Harden is difficult. I can put Curry ahead of Hakeem if he wins another couple titles. Hard to decide between players that have always had the ball in their hands as compared to others like Hakeem/Duncan. Leonard is a terrific player he still has a lot more to prove.

I'm no NBA expert and lists are always tough. This isn't bad though I don't agree with the order of your top 4 - I think that Hakeem tops this list easily and Duncan is the clear #2. Then Curry/Durant round our the top 4 (not sure who goes first) and after that it gets tougher. I think I have T-Mac ahead of Carter as retiring at 33 doesn't matter if we're ranking players in their primes.

Perfect summary, agree with every word. Really feel bad for DD but you gotta do what you gotta do. Next season was going to be boring as hell, wait for the playoffs to start and not feeling too optimistic about what we can do there even with Lebron in the West, just too much past failure weighing on our shoulders. Now however, if Kawhi shows up and is motivated ... it's the most anticipated season in Raptors history by miles and if everything falls into place just right, I feel like we could go to the finals and maybe even put up a good fight when we get there. I just can't wait! :hyper:

Raptors won without question. Even if Kawhi doesn't resign, a rebuild can easily be executed with Derozan gone.
Why is a rebuild even necessary? They have a good enough team to win their division and with Lebron now out west, the Raptors would likely win the East with their current roster.

I like the trade personally for the Raptors, contingent of course on Leonard playing and playing to his full potential.

He is a much better player than DD and with Green, gives the Raptors a great defensive squad. They didn't give up OG either, which is nice.

If Leonard's head is in it then the Raps have a shot to go to the finals this year. After that, we'll see.

The only thing I would probably change is keeping Casey...

Demar seems like a good person and it was cool that he liked Toronto and the Raps alot and wanted to stay but damn if I'm not HAPPY that he's finally gone!! No longer will I have to yell at the TV everytime he does something stupid or makes me go WTF and I won't have to deal with watching his annual disappearing act in the post season anymore, so regardless of whether Kawhi stays or goes getting rid of Demar and his crazy contract is a net positive for me already. :)

I'm glad Masai has finally acknowledged that the status quo was not acceptable anymore and he got rid of two of the three biggest problems on the Raps in Casey, Demar and Lowry. With Lowry, if he still plays well I wouldn't be against keeping him, but Demar and Casey definitely needed to go after so many disasters with them at the helm.

Since when is Lowry a problem?

Never. He's the Raptors GOAT.

why is this funny?

Because the American media was bending over backwards to convince themselves that he would absolutely hate having to go to Toronto, will definitely under no circumstance re-sign with the franchise (thus making the trade foolish), and may not even report.

When in reality, he'll report, be the second best player in the conference, and has actually has a good chance of re-signing. Its already been said that he may not want to go to the Lakers because Lebron is now there, and the Clippers are a dog crap organization.

Its funny because people who know very little were\are so sure....and then Woj flies in and smacks them in the face, reminding them its 2018 and 2002 (when NBA players didn't want to play in Toronto) was more than a decade and a half ago.

why is that?
is it simply because they don't get as much exposure or what?
Different style of players I guess. It's also the only Canadian team, higher taxes, cold winters etc. Then they always get the short end of the stick with officials which are more biased in the NBA than other sports. Guys like Lebron always get calls.

Well, I don't know about GOAT but Lowry is fantastic. I've always loved the guy and have always said that he and not DD is our best player.

I thought Khawi would be the best player in the East. If he's #2, who's #1?

Woj is awesome. As far as I can tell (and I don't follow the NBA that closely so take it FWIW) if you just read what he writes and ignore the rest of the media you'll have a very good handle on things. I don't follow the media at all really but whenever I read something he writes I can just tell the guy knows what he's talking about and I wish I could say that about someone who covers hockey.

Giannis will be #1 this year if he's healthy (in terms of overall value renderred). However, the beauty is, Kawhi can shut-down Giannis...but Giannis can't shutdown Kawhi. :naughty:

And Kyle's the GOAT. Statistically, winning (i.e. success of franchise), win shares/48. Its not even close. Wild how little credit he gets.

Giannis will be a Raptor when he hits free agency, calling it now.

Good point though on Kawhi, although I don't think there's a player in the league he couldn't shut down(maybe some of the big men)

Definitely one of the best defensive players of all time
