Raptors Discussion: REPORT: Raptors trade DeRozan, Poeltl, Protected 1st to Spurs for Leonard, Green

My knowledge of pro basketball is limited but the following thought pops in my head about this bold move: Ujiri believes/knows that there is a young player on the roster who was blocked on the depth chart by DeRozan who is ready to fill DeRozan's role to a reasonable facsimile of DD. Have I not also heard that DeRozan's type of game would have committed the Raptors to continuing a style of game than the new coach is hoping to get away from?

Raptors needed to either blow it up and build through the draft, or make a major move for a legit MVP candidate. Sure there are risks, but it's better than just staying the course.

If it doesn't work out, and he leaves in free agency next year, I'd say blow it up at that point.

I think the Spurs did do well considering the circumstances.

The Raps did well too.

The US media will only acknowledge one side.
 
DeMar is just upset he wasn’t good enough.

If the Raps make the finals, and perhaps pull out the Championship, DeMar will forever be known as they guy who had to leave for Toronto to succeed
 
A city that can’t keep their stars trade a 10 year tenured player who loves it here for a player who sat out on his team last year....
 
I am just baffled at the suggestions that he doesn't want to be here. It's not like we are back in 2004 and the Raps sucked. They just won 59 games and there are guys who we talk about that think of not even reporting? What is the turn off here? One of the top cities in North America to boot.

Nah it's fair to see his side too, Carter forced himself out of Toronto, McGrady and Bosh didn't want to stay either. Derozan was their first franchise player that actually wanted to be here and committed to the team. He could have easily left for the Lakers or another team when he was a free agent.

He reportedly is dead set on going back home to LA. (And play for the Lakers).

I see it as a win-win either way.

If he's playing, the Raptors have a top 3 player in the NBA (if healthy)
If he doesn't want to play, trade him to the Lakers for some of their young guys like Ingram, Hart and some 1st round picks,
Either way the Raptors just moved a terrible contract in DD's and have a lot more flexibility now.


I'm not a Raptor fan but living in the city I want to see them do well, watching their games knowing that they were basically a treadmill team and fine with being that was annoying. I'll root for a rebuilding team that's trying to win a championship as it's end goal, I don't understand how anyone could watch a treadmill team that's fine being a treadmill with no real championship aspirations in mind...it's like what are you even trying to accomplish?

Leonard if he's playing gives the Raptors legitimate hope, if he stays then that's even better and who knows, maybe another star wants to play with him here and signs in free agency.

The Lakers went trade Ingram for Kawhi. Ball and Kuzma are the realistic trade targets imo

Whatever reports are out there of him wanting to play for the Lakers seems outdated at this point. He wanted to go there before LeBron signed with the Lakers, but now his preference (according to Woj) has switched to the Clippers.
 
Derozan had financial incentive to re-sign with the Raptors just like Paul George in OKC this summer, he didn’t turn down more money or anything incredible to stay.

He had his chances, plenty of chances. Hopefully Leonard plays or is flipped for some great young talent. Either way the team is better off long term.

I'm a fan of Ball, (And would love to see Lavar piss off as many Canadians as he can) and Kuzma as well, I just think they're more valuable to the lakers than Ingram if they're getting Kawhi.

He could have easily left for 100's of millions elsewhere as well, PG13 lost out on the supermax by going to OKC. The only thing the Thunder could've offered him that the Lakers couldn't was the 5th year but he didn't even sign for 5 years.

I'm a fan of the move because it gives the Raptors a legitimate direction either way, I just understand why DD has the right to feel upset.
