also, Kawhi wants $$ and if he sits out 2 yrs in a row, no team is gonna give him anything about a vet min. So it would be financially, not in his best interest, to hold out 2 yrs in a row

It's about playing in LA. If he wanted money, he was eligible to sign a super-max deal just the other day.

yes. it slides.

if he doesn't play for 30 days, he loses his free agency next year.

if he doesn't report to the raps within the next week, the raps can sanction him in other ways (or have the deal voided).

Nice to know. Why are all the idiots in the American media stating that he won't play for the Raptors then?

He has no choice but to play at least a little with the Raptors.

Could he fake an injury though?

One thing that is bothersome in all of this DD talk is that for once the Raps actually have not been left at the alter by a player. They left the player at the alter.

As much as DD feels disrespected, understand one thing. We drafted you, we developed you, we paid you. In the end its a business, and your an asset. When an asset depreciates in any business it is replaced. You have been replaced. But at the same time your getting paid what we were willing to pay you. So shut up. Take it as a man and shut up.

For years the Raps have had players like Stoudamire, McGrady, Carter and Bosh cripple the self esteem of the organization as a whole and their fan base. Demanded trades out of Toronto and made us suffer for years. For once, we run our business like it should be run. We make decisions not the employees!!!! And DD thinks he's owed something? We gave you something DD, a contract that will set u up for life. Do you job in San Antonio and shut up.

The Raptors didn't care. They know any threat of failing to report is probably empty, since they can fine Leonard for each practice and game he misses -- up to his full $20.1 million salary.

If Toronto gets the sense by Thanksgiving that Leonard is leaving regardless, they can try to flip him to the Lakers or Clippers. Toronto won't make itself whole in such a deal, but they could recoup enough of what they traded as to make today's move almost risk-free.

If Leonard walks for nothing, the full rebuild is on. Toronto is clearly fine shedding the final two guaranteed years of DeRozan's contract, at $27.7 million a pop, and bailing out before they face the dilemma of signing DeRozan to another mega-deal into his 30s.

Leonard at his apex is good enough to transition the Raptors as Kyle Lowry ages -- good enough that you can justify avoiding a rebuild. DeRozan isn't.

If you're still criticizing Masai/Raps for this trade, read that quote a million times.

First String: Lowry-Leonard-Anunoby-Ibaka-JV
Second String: FVV-Green-Powell-Miles-Siakam
Third String: Wright-Richardson-???-???-???

The Raptors will need a new backup center and a couple of really cheap bench guys. They could end up using Powell as trade bait to get that center, so Miles shifts to the backup #3, Siakam to the backup #4, and then having someone new replace Poeltl as the new backup #5. Then just get a cheap #2/#3 to pair with Richardson and a couple of cheap #4/#5 guys like Noguiera was last year.

They signed D League MVP Brown to another one year deal on the cheap.

ya he only wants to go to LA or NY to expand his brand. nothing to do with money tho

Expand your brand in a country fool instead of only one state!!! Don't worry he will realize it when he is actually here that the most money he can make is being the potential face of the NBA for an entire country. And be able to expand his brand here more fruitfully.

If Kawhi fails to report:

Lowe: What the Kawhi trade means for Raptors, Spurs and NBA

His camp made it very clear over the past week, to the Raptors and other teams, that Leonard wanted no part of Toronto, sources say.

The Raptors didn't care. They know any threat of failing to report is probably empty, since they can fine Leonard for each practice and game he misses -- up to his full $20.1 million salary.

Well, we know one player seems fine playing in Toronto

Well, we know at least that he has solid taste in terms of Power Rangers :sarcasm:

You know, I was just thinking "Man, I really need to hear what Lou Williams, hired gun extraordinare" thinks about the subject of loyalty.

Kawhi + Drake to the Lakers for Ball + Kuzma.

You heard it here first folks

Eeeeewwwwwwwwww. Don't want to be within 100km of the toxic insanity of the Ball family. Even as a joke trade.

Stephen A Smith... What did he say about this trade? I'm at work. Thanks.

He said predictably Stephen A Smithy things.

Shout out to Zach Lowe, who called it a week ago, and is the only NBA media member who respects the franchise.

Lowe actually overshot. His proposal was DeRozan, OG, and multiple picks.

I actually overestimated by less than that the other day when I was talking to Woodman and suggested DeRozan, Poeltl, Powell, and a 1st for Kawhi, Green, and a presumably-retiring Ginobili as salary ballast. I clearly underestimated how much the Spurs would value DeMar in thinking that the propsect of a return-to-form Powell would be needed to sweeten the pot.

This whole "Masai stabbed him in the back" narrative is super dumb. Last I heard it was reported that Masai said "we probably won't trade you." to DeMar. If he chose to interpret that sentence without the "probably" and all the very clear implications that word contains, that's on him. Not some mythical Canadian Sports Franchise Boogeyman that's out to steal your soul along with your sense of trust.

Also, in spite of my boundless love for all things Chris Carter, what in the blue hell is he doing talking basketball?

You remember that guy Butch who used to coach us?

Yeah, him:

Cris is his younger brother, so the household knows a little about round ball.

I would go:

Starting: Lowry | Green | Leonard | Siakam | JV
Bench Mob: Wright | VanVleet | Powell | OG | Ibaka
Specialist: Miles
The 12th man spot can be filled on a rotating basis by Richardson, Brown, or some other signing that they feel is appropriate to the situation (and not keeping one of those two stapled to the bench and never playing all year long)

The roster may be 15 players, but you can only dress 12, so the concept of a 3rd string is basically pointless.

Honestly, give half a chance I would see if someone might take Ibaka for the opportunity to see if Powell rebounds into a capable player again, re-sign Bebe to be the bench 5, and sign (*gasp!*) Vince to close his career out where it began as another gunner for the second unit. I'd do that just for the opportunity to field a total bombs-away smallball bench unit of Wright/Vanvleet/Vince/Miles/OG from time to time.

Does that mean I'm going to Popeye Jones to get hockey takes? Or Wayne Gretzky for baseball or golf? They have family members (or in-laws) who play those sports, so they're obviously intimately in the know in that regard, yeah?

Let's ask Darnell Nurse what he thinks about all this. His sister is a pro basketball player. Maybe he can fix the Argos while we're at it since he's got CFL and NFL in his blood.

I respect the hell out of Cris Carter (yes, I misspelled it. Good catch. It's not like that's totally irrelevant, nor is it all that surprising given that he's pretty much one of maybe 4 guys I can think of who spell an inordinately common name in a particularly uncommon fashion) He should've been in the HOF a lot sooner than he ultimately was. But he's a football lifer. His life experience and first-hand knowledge comes from football. I'll listen to him talk football all day long. But being the sibling/family member of someone with other sports experience doesn't really qualify him as an expert in that field.

norm is useless tho.

2017-18 Norm was useless

2015-16 Norm was really intriguing and 2016-17 Norm was still pretty good. Find a team that thinks they can fix his shooting stroke and get him to re-focus on D and sell him to the moon as a potential linchpin of a strong playoff roster that needs a 3-and-D type youngster. And all it will cost them is the low low price of sticking Ibaka's rapidly deteriorating corpse into the freezer before the smell starts to bother people.

There's been one NBA champion from the last ~20 years without an MVP winner on their team.

Raptors needed to either blow it up and build through the draft, or make a major move for a legit MVP candidate. Sure there are risks, but it's better than just staying the course.

If it doesn't work out, and he leaves in free agency next year, I'd say blow it up at that point.

Dont know what to think. We should be happy but we pretty much know hes gone next yr. If he doesnt re sign we lose the deal. Only 2 good things
Didnt give up Siakam, Ano, Wright or Freddy. Created huge cap space. So in theory they go for it this yr...golden state or Lakers win it all. We lose Leo and rebuild around the young guys we kept and have huge $ available. But mistreatment of Demar is really truly stupid. Lover T.O. did everything for franchise..told he wasn't being traded and we lie to him. For future guys this does us a dis favor. If Leo misses most of yr or we suck Masai is fired. You make a a move like this and look like a genius or you fail and you're done

The Raptors got the best player in their entire history today, and the fans have an issue with it. There's just nothing more Toronto than that.

If we get anything near 2017 playoff Kawhi, we'll finally make the finals.

Remember when we got Donaldson?

"But, Lawrie is a good Canadian kid! What were they thinking?! I'll never watch the Jays again!"
