I don't have a problem with moving guys. But I do think it's stupid to tell someone they aren't going and then turn around and move them. Why do that? Why make any assurances? At best nothing happens and you never needed to do it. At worst you end up lying to the person and give your organization a public black eye. Not the worst thing in the world. But I wouldn't go and seek out the trouble.
Just kind of hilarious and impressive that the Raptors managed to piss off both the player coming to them and the player leaving at the same time.
Still skeptical
in regards to the DeMar being mad/Masai lying to him. meh get over it.
Bit of a gambit staking your GM job on a guy with character issues who is openly hostile to the idea of joining your team and having traded the only NBA star who ever enthusiastically wanted to be in your program/city.
Reminds me of a desperation Cliff Fletcher move.

Several things, and this is all said in a non-pointed, non-aggressive way.
1. One could see this as the acquisition of a very valuable asset who's value is at its lowest
2. Masai is the President, and in all likelihood, will not have his job riding on this
3. Kawhi was hostile to the Spurs, and it is being implied (by the US media) that he is hostile to joining the Raptors
4. Prior to last season, there was no word, not even an inkling of any character issues with Kawhi
5. Demar is not an NBA Star.
6. This is not hockey

Yeah I don't think Masai's job is on the line either, far from it. I think he may have been "desperate" only in the sense that we keep failing in the playoffs so we really needed to do something as opposed to maintaining the status quo. And this is certainly "doing something".
You mean Kawhi hasn't actually said this and it might not be true? That's great if it's true.![]()
I agree with most of this except the bolded. He is a star. He's just not a top-shelf Mega-Star a la Curry/LeBron/Westbrook..or Kawhi.
He's on that Jimmy Butler/Klay Thompson sort of tier where everyone knows his name and knows he's a good player, but he's not a guy that you build teams around.
It does seem a bit desperate doesn't it. It makes some sense to me in the sense that our situation IS desperate. On the other hand, after breaking his promise to DD his word isn't gonna mean squat in the future which could make it quite difficult to attract players here in the future. I can just imagine him trying to entice Kawhi with whatever promises and Kawhi giving him a cold start and saying whatever dude, put it in writing and I'll have my lawyer look at it.![]()
Lol you guys have to consider the sources.
The American media (salty) who cheer for the story (which is smallest\least sexy with him going to Toronto, even less so than staying in San Antonio) is pushing narrative.
Look through the salt, young padawans.

With the protection on the pick, if the Raptors get the 19th overall, can they choose to give it anyways. If they lose Kawhi at year's end, and decide to get younger, the 2020 1st may end up being more valuable to the team.
Crazy to be trading your franchise player who also loves the city for a guy who wont even be here for long. That is alot to give up for one year of this guy.
I'd say a tier or two down, Nem. Give Klay that usage rate, and he leads the league in scoring. And Jimmy does the same things, but can be the best wing defender on a team.

What is next?
Is Lowry thrilled to be playing with an MVP level player? Or is he hurt that his boy got traded?
Love this trade. Excellent work from Masai. Moved a great guy but a guy that clearly wasn't good enough to get things done in the playoffs.
The Claw... phenomenal nickname for the newest Raptor. MLSE marketing dept has to be licking their collective chops.
