Masai would be gambling whether his job would survive a rebuild, or if a couple of years of bad basketball in the name of restocking the cupboards would require him to fall on his sword to sate the fans' need to "blame" someone for mounting losses.

How much of a concern is that though - would he have any trouble finding another job if it came down to that?

I think we're forgetting something in all of this: Goddamn, the Raptors have lineup flexibility for days now.

Lowry / Green / Kawhi / Siakam / JV
VanVleet / Wright / Powell / OG / Ibaka
Miles slots in whenever we need shooting.

They legitimately have like 5 or 6 guys that can guard multiple positions. There's basically no longer a lineup in the league that another team can send out on the court that the Raptors can't optimally match up against.

Originally I kind of wanted the Raptors to find a place for Vince to finish his career as a Raptor in a bench shooter type role. But now I'm not really sure where there's a place for him. We've gone from having too many 4/5s to too many backcourt/wing guys.

there is no gamble here.

dumping Demar was a good thing, no matter what happens.

I agree with this. I kind of meant an optics gamble. If the Raptors don't seriously challenge for a title and Kawhi walks, the casual fans that make up the bulk of the fanbase will riot even though this was a good/the right move. This is how Masai's job would be threatened.

Yes, Raptors are better now, but if Kawhi leaves next year (as all indications point to), this is a bad trade.
Plus I liked DeRozan :(

To me whether people see this as negative or positive really comes down to 2 things:
  1. Do you believe DD ever takes that next step and becomes a consistent strong playoff performer being the number 1 guy on the Raps?
  2. Is it more important to you that Raps continue to be a strong regular season team that can win a round or 2 in the playoffs or legitamately go deep and have a chance to atleast battle for a championship (besides the GS super team thats annoying as ***k) even if its a smaller window
To me personally I'm stoked and believe its good regardless of whether Kawhi signs or not.

  1. I don't believe Raps were ever going to go deep or get to the finals the way things are today.
  2. I don't believe DD is that #1 guy who can push the Raps into the finals even with Lebron gone from the East.
  3. I see Boston and 76ers getting better each year, while Raps will continue to decline or stay status quo since their depending on DD to be that #1 guy.
  4. Bringing in Kawhi is a risk yes, but even having a player of his calibre for 1 year will be a BIG deal in my opinion for the young guys to learn from and see how to embrace pressure and step up in the Playoffs (former Finals MVP)
  5. Guys like Kawhi, there is hardly EVER an opportunity to even get a sniff of guys like that, let alone for the price we got him for (We kept Vanvleet, Siakim, OG - sick)
  6. Green is highly effective player who is going to make the Raps better defensively
  7. If Kawhi signs, we're going to be competing to get to the finals every year while he's here and who knows maybe even win if GS super team breaks up at some point.
  8. If Kawhi doesn't sign, we just freed up a whole lot of cap space and still have several strong young pieces and do a bit of a mini-rebuild - Like I said, currently I don't see how as Boston and 76ers get better that we would be able to compete.
DD will thrive in San Antonia with Popps and their system, good for him, but he would never be able to lead the Raps here - my opinion anyway

Be excited guys, this is a big deal, Kawhi assuming Physical is good, is going to be an absolute STUD here.

It's most certainly a gamble. They're gambling that trading DD for one year of Kawhi > trading DD for young controllable assets to facilitate a rebuild past next season.

I don't disagree that dumping DD was something that needed to happen eventually, but there is definitely an element of risk with doing a deal like this. If they don't find playoff success this season and Kawhi/Green walk next summer, they will have nothing to show for one of their most valuable assets.

The rest of DeRozan's contract, plus the potential of an extension which seemed more likely than a Leonard extension
Why do we want to keep him if we are rebuilding in a couple years anyway?

Cause that's what would happen if we don't make this trade. DeRozan as the #1 guy will never win a championship..it just won't happen. That isn't a slight to him..he's a good dude and a fine complimentary piece but that's all.

He only has one extra year and we are better off dropping the salary and trying to get a bigger fish in the market who maybe can be the #1.

I think people are forgetting we are also getting Danny Green in this deal and he's an excellent player.

Kawhi won't walk for nothing. The Raps can offer him $50m more than any other team. Worst case scenario, we will trade Kawhi's very valuable Bird rights for something.

I think people have a real hard time seeing that DeRozan's value isn't as good as they thought it was.

This is true. I loved DeMar's loyalty and passion, but as a player, he was deeply flawed and everyone knew it. People look at his regular season PPG and think he's a superstar. Unfortunately, his defence and offensive execution are exposed in the playoffs.

I mean, look at all the proposed trades for DeMar over the last month or 2. They were straight trash. DeMar for the 12th pick? DeMar and a young player for the 7th pick and cap dumps? Not great.

Sucks to see the DeRozan era end, and I wish they didnt lie to him, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

I'm still shocked we didn't have to include Siakam or OG in the move.

I think the hockey-only people here are severely underrating Kawhi. When healthy, he's top 5 in the league. We were spinning our wheels with DD and this core here, Masai said there would be some big changes and here they are. It would be crazier sticking with this core and thinking they can do anything they haven't done before, like coming through in the playoffs.
