The true mark of enlightenment is how we treat the worst among us.
I've had loved one who have attempted suicide multiple times, after years of drug abuse and alcoholism, because they couldn't live with being forced to molest their own sibling at knife point. To be honest, I couldn't care less about "enlightenment". If someone hurt my children, I would be willing to live with whatever guilt comes from what I would do to the person who did it.

I'll never forget the footage of Robert Rule forgiving Gary Ridgeway for killing his daughter. I have all the respect in the world for a man like that but, honestly, I don't know if I could do the same.

The problem with having death be a likely option for cases like these with living victims, is that offenders will often escalate to murder to avoid having a living victim as witness.

While that's not untrue, people murder others while committing illegal acts just so they don't face imprisonment or "have their lives ruined."

Gross, selfish people will murder others if it's in their own best interest.

He deserves to be put in a situation where he feels just as scared for his safety as he made this child feel. Let him experience the same damages he’s caused others

I regret cheering for him to succeed.

Nah, that's not on society.

Society is ready to come at this guy with pitchforks.

The problem is a limp-wristed legal system that isn't nearly as punitive as it should be in cases like this.

We already have half the world's prison population and are one of the only western cultures with capital punishments. Strictness of consequences isn't the issue, the consequences are there. He's literally being allowed to plea to a crime he didn't commit (he didn't rape a 13-16 year old. She was 12). The issue is the law is applied very inconsistently in this country. If you have the means to defend yourself and can cobble together a sympathetic jury or judge, there's almost nothing you can't be acquitted for or get a reduced sentence for.

.....which is essentially, exactly what I said.

Limp-wristed or backwards justice systems, in the US as well as Canada, are doing their best to provide one head-scratching verdict after another. Boucher's is just one of many.

Why it continues to happen, I'll never know.

The one situation where I support the death penalty for a crime where the victim didn't die.
I can also live with pedophiles not being allowed to be free ever again, but it should also be definite and not getting out after some time served.

It's worth noting that based on the specifics of his deal, he could literally coach kids hockey if he wanted to some day (assuming there's a willing employer).

I understand the outrage here but I think you need to take a step back.

If Lou knew he needs to be shown the door I don't care how great he was a GM for the Devils, or how good he still is. If he willingly drafted, signed and played a player that raped a 12 year old child, there should be no place for him in the NHL.
There have been far too many instances where players have had criminal backgrounds and he's continually looked the other way

In Boucher's draft year he suddenly switched billet families and then a few months later switched from the OHL to NCAA even though he already had a spot lined up - and you think the Lou and Conte didn't ask about that?

Lou is a totalitarian and micromanager who doesn't let anything get by him. He knows every single thing about every single person in his organization. And this is just one in a long streak from 2010-2014 where stuff like this was happening.

2010 - Drafted Jon Merrill who had been suspended for "character issues" before the draft. He was later suspended again at college for the same "character issues," which later turned out to be stalking/harassing a female classmate. And now he's being implicated in obtaining sexual images of a minor while he played for the Devils.

2011 - Drafted Reid Boucher. Again, this happened before his draft year and there were suspicious changes to where Boucher was living and playing, which are pretty standard things to look into in his draft year. And there appear to be multiple victims.

2012 - Drafted Ben Johnson. A year after he was drafted he was accused of raping two women, one of whom was 16 at the time. The Devils signed him to an ELC while his case was pending and only terminated his contract after he was convicted. Considering he admitted to the acts (his defense was they consented), Lou was totally fine knowing his player who was 19 at the time had sex with a minor and, was willing to give him an NHL career until it became a PR nightmare.

2013 - Drafted Myles Bell. Bell was a 17 year old drunk driver who killed his girlfriend in a fatal accident while going +100 miles an hour. He got off with two years probation and community service because he was a minor. He went undrafted that his first two years of eligibility, plead to a lesser charge, and the Devils took him later as an overager. When he was drafted they all talked about "second chances" and all that stuff but didn't really say anything about why he earned a second chance. This is not a sex crime and there's no evidence of any criminal behavior from him since, but put in the context of the other guys he took a pattern emerges.

Pretty clear history of Lou ignoring criminal behavior, and these are just the ones that have been made public. In the case of Merrill and Boucher there are multiple incidents which appear to have happened after the player was drafted and signed by NJ, which makes Lou an enabler. He's either lying about not knowing or doing a pretty shitty job as GM (or both).

Oof. That is not a good look for Lamorello.

There’s no way for anybody to even try and defend this. Absolutely disgusting. Not going to go into detail as it was still wrong but you can sortve see where people tried to defend the player from the recent draft as he was just an idiot who made a dumb decision. Boucher is straight up f***ed in the head for this.

Great post - but Boucher did not switch from OHL to NCAA, that would be impossible. I'm guessing you meant he went from being a UNTDP player (likely NCAA bound) to OHL player even tho he had a spot lined up.

Regardless, no way Lou didn't know what happened.

Just to also show how bad Jim Benning was.

Also this might make a case on the Sarnia Sting considering they got roasted for hockey culture.

Reid Boucher has joined Brendan Leipsic, Jake Virtanen, Slava Voynov, and Mitchell Miller.

Well Reid, I'm Chris Hansen from NBC Dateline and we're doing a story on hockey players who try to meet underage girls for sex
