And league is full of bad dedensive and sheltered guys, who have BAD ANALYTICS.

What is wrong of you guys that you just can't accept something good being good, and have to debate to death, how it must be something bad even if it looks good.
What is wrong with people providing context? I dunno.

The coaches seem to hate him for whatever reason. He's been healthy scratched every season. He might have played well in preseason, but that bar incident doesn't reflect well. Kinda reminds me of Semin a bit..... less talent and not quite as much of a headcase, but there's definitely something off about him in terms of personality.

If he scores a few goals, good for him, but I'm no counting on him being part of Stevie's long term plan. I thought he was the Fabbri insurance plan, but looks like Burger is now.
I think its locker room issues as well as having the rap of being a selfish player.

Results are only what will matter. 6 games, 6 goals, 1 per game. Most consistent guy with all his devastating weaknesses
He gave that goal away on Hughes' 2nd goal by essentially running interference on Seider and then not covering Hughes.

This is what my last post was talking about. He's hustling to show coach he's hustling, but he doesn't know how so he's just in the way.

It was one game lol give it time.

Every year all teams are defensively out of sync. It is why scoring is always highest in the first couple of weeks of the season. I am not that worried about d-pairings yet. I really like Holl around the net. Seems to always be in the right spot when the opponent is coming out from behind the net.

Honestly, from what I've seen do far, Spong looks legit. Good shot, good speed, relatively defensively responsible. And I didn't notice any selfishness people are talking about here.

Those criticizing him, please, imagine us playing Zadina instead.

But Zadina was a defensive dynamo, among the best of all time, if you recall. He was so good defensively hardly anyone could even see how good he was, defensively.

Also, while Sprong has actually put the puck in the net twice, we could have EXPECTED Zadina to put in twice as many, even though he would have gotten zero. In the new analytic NHL, expecting goals is more valuable than actual goals.

I know it has only been two games but fu*k it: let's get this guy an extension.

He has been visibly working pretty hard, goes to the rough areas, could probably get an extension with him for like 2-3 years for relatively cheap still (3 mil? AAV). Provides depth scoring and can move up and down the lineup. He can take Kostin's spot and we can possibly trade kostin at the draft. By then, we will have soderblom up (potentially), with kasper/danielson trying to outplay veleno (highly likely).

He'll want more than 3 mil if he keeps up and pots 25 by the end of the year. I like Kostin and hope we can keep him. Fischer is the guy that's been about as useless as can be. He can go.

And Veleno has looked more valuable on the ice than Andrew Copp. We could swap those two in the lineup and I'd bet the team would have more positive results. If there were a way to trade Copp I'd strongly consider making that happen, especially with Compher (albeit in a small sample size) looking like twice the player Copp is.

Thats only reason why I say we should lock him up right now. He probably deserves much more if he can round out the defensive side.

He's on a 1 year deal. He can't sign anything until January 1.
Too early anyways, he always looks good at the start of the season. His effort level and focus is a lot better than in the past though.

I'm not too worried about locking him up, he's not the type of player that can go anywhere and be successful. If some team overpays him this offseason, they'll probably regret it.

You can absolutely see why coaches don't trust him. As soon as he stops scoring he will be stapled to the bench.

Like what?

He won't stop scoring. One of most consistent guys to give some secondary scoring.

Only one game at minus side, is +6.

Has never scored a multi-point game. talk about consistency.

I mean he has a lot of pressure to perform this year. Statistically he had a really good season last year and it sounds like the Wings were the only team that came knocking. I would be leery to lock him into a longer deal, because I think we are getting the best Sprong you can get. I'm not sure that would continue if he was signed long term. For every Danny Cleary that finally puts it together there are 9 guys that fall back to their average. He is either going to continue doing really well and price himself off the Wings or fall back into old habits. He's they type of player you don't sign long term if you want to manage your cap properly. If he wants to continue on 1 year deals fine. Maybe I'd be ok with 2 years but with Kasper, Soder, Burger and Danielson probably looking to make the team next season, I am hesitant extend a middle 6 guy quickly.

He has been better than I expected so far based on his previous reputation.

Not sure if that will hold up over the remainder of this 82 game season, but based on what I’ve seen so far I would be comfortable bumping him up the lineup and giving him more minutes.

I was probably too harsh on him base on what I have heard from others.
