He has been better than I expected so far based on his previous reputation.

Not sure if that will hold up over the remainder of this 82 game season, but based on what I’ve seen so far I would be comfortable bumping him up the lineup and giving him more minutes.

I was probably too harsh on him base on what I have heard from others.

You see that he is already getting more minutes, than he got at Seattle?

12:12 on average at 5-on-5, which is 2 minutes more he got at Seattle/Washington days.

There's only 1 minute difference to Raymond and DeBrincat, imo, his role is just fine.

Yeah, I think that’s justified.

I would like to see a 2nd line of XXX-Compher-Sprong

And a 3rd line of Perron-Veleno-Rasmussen

XXX should be Berggren or Fabbri, IMO. Wouldn’t even mind Kostin getting a chance there.

4th line can be Kostin-Copp-Fischer

You can absolutely see why coaches don't trust him. As soon as he stops scoring he will be stapled to the bench.

I agree, but that can be said of any scoring winger that isn't a plus defensively.

And to be fair, he looks better this season than last. His effort level has been consistently high, and there are only two goals goals against where he's been directly at fault. Game 1 vs NJ when he interfered with Seider, and Winnipeg when he was caught way too high up.

Sprong is fine for the role. We're a better team for having him over just about any of the scrubs we've had the last 7 years as our 3rd line RW.

Like what?

He won't stop scoring. One of most consistent guys to give some secondary scoring.

Only one game at minus side, is +6.

Has never scored a multi-point game. talk about consistency.

He is constantly below the puck and has zero interest actually supporting his teammates when they have the puck. I am genuinely shocked how quick he is to jump out of the defensive zone whether we actually secure the puck or not. I honestly feel like he has no idea what he should be doing without the puck most shifts. He also shows very little interest engaging along the boards (apart from passive attempts to contribute while turning up ice) or backchecking to the middle of the ice to contest play in transition. I also don't like how he drifts super wide to the weak side wing in the offensive zone and begs his teammates to pass the puck to him through six sticks. I never liked playing with guys with this profile but maybe it is just me.

The good news is that he has been very good once he has the puck in the offensive zone and in transition. We absolutely need need more depth scoring and absolutely need him to produce offensively to have any chance of staying in the playoff race.

Are you describing Sergei Berezin?

For all the things he does wrong, the results are still pretty decent.

We track 18 statistics and throw them in a formula to come up with an overall player score!
To be honest, we only have data for 7 of those 18.
Then, we take those 18 (7) statistics and categorize them into 3 main groups!
Well, again we only have 7 statistics. So, just ignore one of those 3 main groups completely.
So we've got two groups. One with a score of 98 and one with a score of 29. Average those out and his overall player score is, you guessed it, 98!

....What am I looking at here?

That's funny.

I think it is how they have different weigths for those groups. Imo, defensive stats aren't very important for a winger. Forward(wingers) value comes and should come on any analytics mostly from scoring, then something from transitioning and least from defence.

But he is good. Exactly what was expected. Bottom6 scoring, thank you.

I think he’s been great. His defensive deficiencies are apparent but honestly I expected much worse based on his reputation. And it’s hard for me not to like a guy who always seems hungry to score. I wasn’t expecting him to have this much hustle.

What's interesting is Sprong's TOI has had 5+ minute swings from game to game. His usage seems all over the place.

He scored a goal against Columbus but even then he only played 11 and a half minutes. I'm not quite sure what to make of it because I thought he's pretty defensively responsible

I’m with you. I haven’t seen any major defensive lapses yet. He’s a bit slow on the back check at times but he doesn’t seem completely off as a winger.

I've been a huge fan of his game. His shots are absolute rockets and he shoots from everywhere on the ice. With the amount of posts/bars he's hit, he should have 4 or 5 more goals this year. One of the few guys I've noticed (in a positive light) every game this season.

If he keeps his current level of play up, what's an extension look like for him? Walman'ish?

Duclair. Once you build a reputation in the league, it's hard to shed. I doubt there will be a bidding war for Sprong. There's actually a decent number of UFA forwards this offseason.

If there's a bidding war, I'd rather go after someone like Chandler Stepheson than Sprong. At least he'll add some much needed speed. It'll be interesting to see where the top end guys wind up next year.
