Confirmed with Link: Red Wings sign F Daniel Sprong (1 yr, 2M)

He has played better defensively in the past handful of games. He's actually been doing a better job of covering for a pinching defenseman than the other forwards. Just being back there prevents an odd man break, even if he doesn't steal the puck. Not sure if those stats reflect that.

Just got this in the mail today! Shoutout to Autographs for a Cause.

Id promote Sprong to first line, see what he can do with Larkin and what Reimond capable without Larkin

he would have to play a lot more defense so that might be tough.

All of our lines are playing pretty well together. I'm not sure if I would want to change anything up right now.

We really can't afford him at 4M a year.

Yes we can. Cap is going up. Detroit can afford him by a few minor moves.

One of Ras or Veleno goes if their raises are higher than 3 mil
One of Petry, Maatta or Holl goes
Perron goes
Yzerman finds a rube dumb enough to trade for Copp
Kostin goes

This isn't the Ken Holland Red Wings where any player signed to the team gets 5 years + with a NMC. There will be roster churn.

Sprong really only works because he's dirt cheap and operates even with 4th line ice time so you don't feel bad having a guy making $4M/yr on the 4th line (like we already are with Fabbri).. If someone wants to pay him like a 2nd liner, call up a kid and move on. Sprong is one of the guys that gets churned.

And really we need to stop being ageist and add some kids to the cogs. It's almost embarrassing that we don't have any rookies up given where we are organizationally. What good are veterans in key positions if there aren't kids around learning from them? Is the plan not to build a core that can compete for a long time? Getting kids integrated into the NHL lineup is a pretty important step to that.

Despite his hair line, Sprong is only 26. Plus he's played well defensively, and if he continues to improve he could see time on higher lines.

You don't make a team better by promoting kids that are worse than the aging vets. Right now there's NOBODY in the prospect system better than Sprong. Burger is softer and even worse defensively, while providing similar offense.

The team probably drops Perron and re-signs Sprong. Perron is so slow now.

Choices moving forward should be:

Fabbri or Sprong
Kane or Perron
Holl or Petry

Only keep one from each pairing...

Petry has an NMC, so he won't be moved. Maybe he could retire and move into management? I don't think Holl will be traded either. Maatta seems to be the obvious D-man out. Need to make space for Ed.

I'll take Kane over Perron any day, and the same with Fabbri over Sprong.

We're going to be up against the cap next year, and we're going to be forced to bring in players on ELCs.

Buyout is the only option for Petry, savings are not much, but at least it free ups a roster spot

I'm sure we won't be able to keep all 3, but I would try to extend Sprong, Ghost, and Kane. (Assuming we don't move one or two of them at the TDL)

All 3 of them are good fits with this team and give you a real shot in the arm on offense.

I didn't want to beat the dead horse, but it's Ghost that's keeping Ed down right now. I'd move on from him just for that. Mid season too...

I was going to say something similar ... if you want to emphasize Seider and Ed's development, I think we need to goodbye to Ghost.
