Re-tooling For One More Run With This Core

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. The admin team will continue to work on existing issues, templates and upgrade all necessary available addons to minimize impact of this new version. Click Here for Updates
This current team is honestly softer than the Phil, Bozak, JVR and Dion Homophobic Sluroof edition of some years past. Which I thought was impossible, but they somehow made it happen.

After setting a franchise record for points in the regular season, before making their same routine exit in round one, I find myself interested in seeing one more run with this core, provided some coaching and roster changes are made in an attempt to get the mix right. I'd love to hear everyone's plan in depth. Here is mine...

Trade Them
Alexander Kerfoot (3.5 million)
Jake Muzzin (5.6 million)
Justin Holl (2.0 million)
Petr Mrazek (3.8 million)

Let Them Walk / Retire
Ilya Mikheyev (1.6 million)
Ondrej Kase (1.25 million)
Jason Spezza (750k)

Re-sign Them
Mark Giordano (1× 1.0 million)
Jack Campbell (3x 4.0 million)
Ilya Lyubushkin (2× 2.0 million)
Timothy Liljegren (3x 3.0 million)
Rasmus Sandin (2x 1.5 million)
Colin Blackwell (1x 900k)
Pierre Engvall (2x 1.75 million)

New Money
Phil Kessel's cap retention (1.2 million)
Salary cap increase (1.0 million)

Roster Forwards
C #1: Auston Matthews (11.6 million)
C #2: John Tavares (11.0 million)
C #3: David Kampf (1.5 million)
C #4: Addition
RW #1: Mitch Marner (10.9 million)
RW #2: William Nylander (7.0 million)
RW #3: Addition
RW #4: Colin Blackwell (900k)
LW #1: Addition
LW #2: Michael Bunting (900k)
LW #3: Pierre Engvall (1.75 million)
LW #4: Addition
13th Forward: Wayne Simmonds (900k)
14th Forward: Kyle Clifford (763k)

Roster Defense
LD #1: Morgan Rielly (7.5 million)
LD #2: Mark Giordano (1.0 million)
LD #3: TJ Brodie (5.0 million)
RD #1: Addition
RD #2: Timothy Liljegren (3.0 million)
RD #3 Ilya Lyubushkin (2.0 million)
7th Dman: Rasmus Sandin (1.5 million)

Roster Goalies
Jack Campbell (4.0 million)
Addition

Total estimated Cap Hit: 71.2 million
Total remaining Salary Cap: 11.3 million

- IMO, this team needs to add a physical, top 6, power forward to play alongside Matthews and Marner, allowing Bunting to slide down to the 2nd line, where he would be a natural fit. I would expect this forward to cost in the $3.0-4.0 million range.

- IMO, this team requires a long term, steady, shutdown partner for Morgan Rielly. A natural RHD that will allow Brodie to play further down the lineup.

- There are numerous players in the system, on ELCs, that should get an opportunity to cheaply fill out some of the bottom 6 roster spots. The 5 names that come to mind include Nick Robertson, Nick Abruzzese, Joey Anderson, Pontus Holmberg and Alex Steeves. I expect at least 2 of those players will make the opening day roster in 2022.

- I think that Toronto will likely stick with Jack Campbell in goal, unless someone unexpected comes available. That said, it's imperative that Mrazek is replaced, with a cheap, solid backup, who has played meaningful games in the NHL. I'm expecting Campbell to cost a little bit of money, therefore, I'd hope that the backup comes in under $2.0 million.

- If the correct addition is made to the defense core, I really like the group on paper. Not only do I think the mix is right, I love the 7 man depth of that group, allowing some of the guys in the system to keep cooking and Sandin to rotate in regularly, keeping everyone fresh. I'd hope the addition they make costs between $3.0-$4.0 million and is a natural RHD.
Good OP - you've obviously put a lot of thought / effort into it.

The problem : The EXACT same thread was done last year after the playoff loss so when does the "one more run (year)" actually mean "one more run (year)"?

Just had to ...

Honestly, I think you move two of JT, Marner or Nylander. We are too much on the "high skill" spectrum (hence regular season warriors, playoff poopers). Sacrifice some (not all) of the "high skill" game for more "grind it til you find/heart game".

I am not saying get Colton Orrs, but more skilled-rugged players - I think we could use 2 -3 Nazem Kadris/Matthew Tkachuk-esque players (without the suspensions of course) and we would be alot better. JT would probably fit this style a lot better, but his cap hit is horrible.

You can't move JT so that leaves Marner and Nylander.

We don't want Matthew Tkachuk - he has been HORRID in the playoffs.

I don't disagree with you, but the problem I see, everytime someone makes this argument, is two fold...

1. There are a handful of those types of players in the entire league and teams are extremely unlikely to move them because they know how valuable they are to their own success.

2. Teams aren't very high on trading their most highly coveted pieces, for guys that another team is moving because they couldn't get it done.

The likelihood that Toronto actually gets an upgrade on one of the guys they would be moving, is very, very small. Of course, you entertain all offers and reach out in an attempt to better your roster, but we certainly shouldn't assume that just because we want to trade a good player, that the rare type of player we covet, will be available.

I'm open to the idea of a pivot towards a different core and strategy, but I need to hear realistic (and detailed if possible) moves that would actually improve the existing core and periphery roster, while adhering to cap compliance.

I'd love a team with the roster composition that some have suggested, but I need more details of the trades and signings that get us there.

I miss Kadri too

Remember the Avs a few years ago where they traded away ROR, Duchense and others and retool. If we are going to make changes, it is really boom or bust. Like either go big or just make minor changes.
I think unless something dramatic happens, there will be minor changes and the only big change will be Trotz coming in to replace Keefe. Would be such irony if Keefe wins Coach of the Year and gets fired. Worked wonders for another team in Toronto before.

Can't believe OP, said Tkachuk

Anyone who says Tkachuk would be good on this team has never watched a game of hockey that doesn't involve the Leafs. That's a clear case of thinking that gritty players = good in playoffs.

just hire a speechwriter and have one of the vets deliver it

Install Teams and Zoom, get a team from Dailla Lama Academy and get them to calm the team down
Or call up Jacko during intermission if they need a tough mofo speech

We are too loyal to fault

Spezza and Simmonds takesaway growth opportunities for Robertsson, Steeves and Anderson.
They need opportunities to play and build their game

NHL experience is NHL experience. You can play 10 years in the minor and it won't help

I would really take a look at what JT can get in return. Seattle might want him to sell jersey and have something for their fans to cheer.
The more I think about it, the more I don’t see why he has NTC and no free agent would sign… if the Leafs win a Cup, it is all worth it.
JT is not a bad player, heck he was good and sometimes great but trading him and signing Kadri to replace him will probably still give 5mil cap space for Leafs to upgrade the 3rd line.
Masai traded DD and Dubas kept saying he wants to learn from Masai.

I was thinking a Tkachuk style player too, or a Wheeler when he was good, Nick Paul anyone 🤣
The name doesn't matter to me, but whoever it is has to be willing to take the puck in between the dots on the rush and do something with it. This entire team is a perimeter team... doesn't work come playoff time.
I would not keep Engvall, I think there are better options out there for what we are going to have to pay him.
I don't mind keeping Kerfoot, I get everyones take on him, but I like his flexibility
As for the D, maybe Muzzin is LTIR'd? This might have been his last gas. I would keep Brodie, despite some misplays, overall he is good. Gio is a must keep imo... agree with the poster that the AAV is prob close to 3mil, any less is a win. I would like Holl to disappear.
