I don’t wanna retool with this core unless one of the core is apart of the retool

Otherwise it’s just shuffling deck chairs

But to entertain this thread, I think we need:

Top Pairing RHD
Top 6 Power Forward
Starting Goaltender
Proper Matchup Center
Agree with top pairing RHD
Agree with top 6 power forward
Disagree with needing a starting goalie, Campbell was phenomenal.
Kampf is a very good match up center, are you referring to 4th line ?

Top 2 RD, 2nd line LW, 4th line C, 4th line RW, back up goalie

Internal changes

Robertson needs to be called up full time, Lily and Sandin as well

Campbell at 4m would be my absolute last option. I'd sign him early at 2-3m.

I don't see how he gets 4m+ after failing to break ,900 since December.

Similar to how he started hot then tanked in the regular season, in his last 10 playoff games he's now 3-7 with a sub .900 save %. after his hot start vs Montreal.

I would try to sign him for a number like 2.8-3.2 and if he says no he drops down my list quickly and i go speak to other goalies first.

I don't understand how people watched that series and thought Campbell was excellent. It's 2022, NHL average goaltending is .915 and above. He had a .892 and was negative in goals saved above expected.

Florida had a vision of a team they are going to build
They went out got that type of players last 2 years

Bennett
Gudas
Reinhart
Verhaege
Marchment

I wanted Bennett so bad last year. But who needs Bennett for a 2nd rounder when you can get Nick Foligno for a 1st

Are you suggesting the following?

Rielly / Addition
Giordano / Liljegren
Sandin / Lyubushkin
Addition

Both Muzzin and Brodie coming off the cap, freeing up 11.6 million?

I ask because I'm not totally against that idea, but I think they'll do it over two years, with Muzzin being phased out this year and Brodie at the conclusion of 2022. I think there will be some nerves in the organization, to allow both Liljegren and Sandin to accept such large, full time roles, in the same year. I'd imagine they'll have Liljegren assume the full time this gig this year, with Sandin getting one more year of significant rotational minutes up and down the lineup, before assuming a full time role in 2023.

Yeah I don't a really clear timeline other than Muzzin should be gone because of health, age and cap reasons and Brodie could follow suit in 2023. My main motivations would be to find Liljegren and Sandin permanent promotions on the Leafs over the next year and a half like you said.

But the other asterisk here is I'm honestly not sure if Sandin is a player I'm interested in building with. He's a great kid but I'm just trying to envision a future Florida, Tampa playoff series and what does a mature Sandin offer? Does he still have foot speed issues? Is he still the primary forecheck target? Is he an elite Adam Fox type defenseman who is using his brain to cover for whatever physical limitations? I have no idea.

The "Addition" you have beside Rielly is interesting. Can that be a Chychrun or some other truly elite anchor?

I'll drive him back to Soo or the Pearson airport to get him the hell out of here
Dude's so mentally fragile and technically flawed

He'll be a very good back up. He's no starter

If you can sign Campbell at that price, all the power to you. The problem becomes that there just isn't a bunch of quality goalies available. Free agency looks fairly awful.

I'll respond the same way I did to another poster. If there is a trade to be had for the likes of a Connor Hellebuyck type goaltender, I'm all ears. I have no problem rebalancing the cap to add a player of that quality, at a decent cap hit ($6.1 million)... But I need a realistic name and a price before I just move on from Campbell. I'm certainly not tied to the idea of him as the starter, I just need a better option, that is both realistic in terms of acquisition and price.

He's a decent upcoming D, maybe Kenny Jonsson type
Problem with Sandin he doesn't really specalize in anything. But him and Lily have taken great strides

They don't have a mentor like Chara or Weber. Muzzin is senior but really doens't have the leadership qualities

I have to say, Verhaeghe and Bennett were on my radar. I think Dubas was in negotiations with Verhaeghe but the extra term or money didn't line up. Bennett would have been an expensive re-sign though. And of course Cory Perry who just keeps burning us while Simmonds and Thornton are in semi retirement.

I think Dubas is on the right track looking for these types of guys. I can definitely see a value in bringing back more prime aged GTA, Ontario players since many of them were raised in the junior culture here and are familiar with the playoff format. They just have to be a little younger and healthier than Simmond and Clifford. Look at Paul, Perry, Verhaeghe, Marchment, Bennett, all these guys Florida teams are building with are local guys.

I'm happy for you to provide me a detailed breakdown of a blowup that looks better and gets this team competing for a Cup faster. I'm sure it would be a great read!

nah, just enjoy the summer and the regular season again.

detailed breakdowns are for @zeke to show how alternate stats reign supreme.

I'm sure your retooling will work splendidly.

2nd round, here we go!!!!!!!!

(or as the diapers exclaim "let's gooooo!!!!!!")

That's a shame. Was looking forward to hearing your plan.

Have a nice summer!

Free Agency isn't the only way to acquire players. Try making a trades
Isles have two goalies, Varlamov and Sorokin
Pay good assets for a great asset. Try to get Askarov from Canes or Wellestad from Wild

Your solution cannot always be conventional and risk averse.

This is what GM's do. Dubas is so bloddy risk averse, he can't make a balsy move

I'm fine with a left side of Rielly, Gio, Brodie, in any combination of minutes. IMO, Muzzin at 5.6 million, ought to be the odd man out. He just doesn't bring that kind of value to the lineup, at less than 2 million cheaper than Rielly.

Similarly, I'm fine with Liljegren and Lyubushkin on the right side, but we need a #1 RHD to pair with Rielly for a number of years.

If they can swing 3 years at that price I am definitely not going to complain. You'll get ZERO pushback from me. Something tells me that it comes in between $2.5-$3-0 for 3 years, but if they can get it done at the price you're suggesting, I'm two thumbs up!

I’m all for moving Muzzin (thought he had a solid series) but when the player holds all the cards via NTC I’m not holding my breath they’ll be moved. Ideally swap his money for someone to play with Rielly.

Boosh has to be brought back, we need more of that profile and not less.

All I can do is lol at the idea of bringing Lyubushkin, Giordano and Blackwell back.
Interesting. I didn't think any of them were negative contributors. I think Lybushkin was tasked for a role beyond his ability at times, but, IMO, he's an ideal #6 D-man. A younger version of what Bogosian gives Tampa Bay on their bottom pairing.

I also thought thr Gio / Liljegren pairing was excellent in the regular reason and I didn't like that Toronto got away from it in the playoffs. I'd like to see them stick with it next year.

I’d like the leafs to have more of a 3rd line that can score and Kampf on the 4th line for more defensive usage. We need to get a 3C so when Tavares doesn’t have it going we can give more ice time to the third line.

Something like this

X - Matthews - Marner
X- Tavares - X
Robertson - X -X
X - Kampf -X

LW can be Bunting as we probably won’t be able to upgrade there. Use nylander yo improve 3C or goalie.

Agree entirely. I'm all for a partner for Rielly. I actually think you can make a trade there and save $1-$1.5 million, while getting better.

Lyubushkin is my ideal type 3rd pairing, RHD to pair with a smaller guy like Sandin.

Marner has to play with Tavares. Last time that happened Tavares scored 47
