Toronto will have about 8m in cap to resign RFAs and UFAs, I think Gio will replace Holl at around the same number as Holl, maybe a bit more, and we resign Lilly, Sandin to round out our defense.

Kerfoot gets traded for picks to clear cap room, Toronto resigns one of Mikey or Engvall, and then fill the rest of the roster with ELC players or cheap contracts in UFA. Either way, our team gets worse due to cap troubles.

Please please please, DO NOT sign Subban for even minimum. He is a cancer and not worth even minimum salary.

Why keep this core when the results are always the same every year? I would keep Matthews, but someone has to go.

Nylander enough said
Tavares hardly showed Up
Marner who needed to body check Paul but was too scares to do so (it is not about knocking Paul on his ass, but disrupting his path to the net and prevent that goal)

I know a relative of Gio's and he told me a few years ago that he would never sign here to play in the "Circus" as he called it. I think if he does decide to stay it won't be for pennies. He is still a very useful top 4 D-man. You are not getting him to leave money on the table to join this Leaf's team in therapy sessions all the time. You leave money on the table for a chance to win.

He purposely forced a trade here. Insiders are suggesting he would sign here for cheaper.

Could that have been in the waffle years?

Ideally you'd probably want a bit of a cleaner slate.

Three factors that are crucially important to playoff success in the NHL:

Goaltending: Campbell is fine and reliable

and

Size, and scoring depth.

In terms of size, we still don't have it, not even after adding Lyubushkin. Not enough anyway. And our scoring depth is good, but still not great. Lightning had a slight to significant edge in all three areas.

If I'm Dubas, I'm looking at ways to make our blueline bigger and younger. So Signing Giordano will be a mistake if it eats up crucial cap space. We should go for someone who's bigger and younger and less likely to break down. We could sure use a Dahlin, Dobson, or Seth Jones type, but of course I'm not sure how we magically grab one. I think our best movable piece is Kerfoot, and perhaps TJ Brodie. If we can ship them for a big right-handed defensemen who can do everything, we'd be better off.

Dubas has also gotta be looking at internal improvement. Engvall and Mikheyev would have to play much bigger roles next year, leveraging their size and speed.
I think Kampf and Kase are 100% keepers.

We are right there. Keep moving through that muck.

I didn't realize we are the only Canadian team choked this season 1st round until I checked score of CGY just now.
My god. Edmonton needed 7 games to beat a Doughty-less Kings team and Calgary played the second worst team to make the playoffs in the league this year and were one goal from elimination. Giving either credit for eeking out series wins by the skin of their teeth against such mediocre teams while punishing the Leafs for a close game 7 loss to an actual power house is about as disingenuous as it gets.

I have total trust in whatever Dubas decides. As such I have no interest in debating with GM bros as to what we should do.

Dubas by some miracle has consistently made us better during years I thought we would take a step backwards.

And why is it "one more run with this core"? They each have multiple years left and I have confidence that all would re up here.

They're right there. Don't gotta too much. They're a top 5 team that lost to a top 3 team. One bounce, they could be the ones moving on.

One more run? Matthews will be 25 when the next season starts. Anyone thinking that we're anywhere near a tear down is out of their absolute damn mind. The core will probably have a bit of a shakeup this summer, but this Leafs team is a going concern. We have a next generation of prospects who are getting close to making impacts (Liljegren in particular). And while JT isn't the player he once was, we have years of experience with Marner to see that a good player who underperforms isn't the dagger that people will claim it is.

There might be a big trade this summer, aka Nylander, but Matthews and Marner are young and signed long term. Brodie and Muzzin come off the books at the same time and will be replaced either through trade, UFA, or some combination of Sandin/Liljegren/Niemela/other prospect, with their cap space paying for Matthews' raise.

Seriously guys, the disappointments of the playoffs suck but this team is in absolutely fantastic shape heading forwards. There's maybe two or three teams who are any better than what we've got going on.

I would say no matter whom we played in G7, we will probably lose. Don't deny it. Check the game 7 last season please.
Like I said, NO Excuse please!!

Trade Muzzin for Sean Walker.

Muzzin will probably only accept a trade if it's to LA. LA needs LHD and has a glut of RHD. Walker/Muzzin both have 2 years remaining on their contracts. Both are probably neutral assets at this point.

Trade Mrazek and Robertson to Chicago for Mitchell (or Phillips/Regula).

Mrazek has a 10 team NTC which probably eliminates most non-playoff teams or non-favorable locations. I'm taking a wild guess that Chicago is not on the list. Chicago has no goalies under contract for next season and a lot of cap space. Robertson is the sweetener for taking Mrazek. Mitchell is in the trade to balance it out - he provides the Leafs an NHL ready D with 1 more year on his ELC. This feels like a steep price to pay to get rid of Mrazek. I have no clue what it will actually take. Phillips/Regula provide the same position but different age/value.

Trade Kerfoot to WSH for Hathaway.

Washington is at the very end of their window. Kerfoot gives them offense higher in the lineup. Hathaway saves the Leafs 2M while rounding out a checking 4th line.

Trade Holl and Anderson to VGK for Roy.

VGK need to save money. Anderson can slot in right away for on their 4th line. Holl gives them a RD to slot behind Pietrangelo/Whitecloud. They may not be in a position to afford Paul. Leafs sign Roy 3.5Mx4 (Kerfoot contract).

Signings:

Wedgewood: 1.25Mx2
ZAR: 1.5Mx2 or 3
Giordano: 1Mx1
Sandin: 1.5Mx1
Liljegren: 2.25Mx2
Engvall: 2Mx2
Rodrigues: 3.5Mx4
Campbell 3.25Mx3

If we played those teams exactly how we played Tampa the series would have been over way before game 7.
Probably not, based on history, they would have played undisciplined and wasted a couple of games. This core and management has lost the last three best of seven playoff series and the best of five play in series in the exact same manner.

Still no point comparing the Leafs to the Flames or Oilers. Them also being based in Canadian cities has nothing to do with us.

After setting a franchise record for points in the regular season, before making their same routine exit in round one, I find myself interested in seeing one more run with this core, provided some coaching and roster changes are made in an attempt to get the mix right. I'd love to hear everyone's plan in depth. Here is mine...

Trade Them
Alexander Kerfoot (3.5 million)
Jake Muzzin (5.6 million)
Justin Holl (2.0 million)
Petr Mrazek (3.8 million)

Let Them Walk / Retire
Ilya Mikheyev (1.6 million)
Ondrej Kase (1.25 million)
Jason Spezza (750k)

Re-sign Them
Mark Giordano (1× 1.0 million)
Jack Campbell (3x 4.0 million)
Ilya Lyubushkin (2× 2.0 million)
Timothy Liljegren (3x 3.0 million)
Rasmus Sandin (2x 1.5 million)
Colin Blackwell (1x 900k)
Pierre Engvall (2x 1.75 million)

New Money
Phil Kessel's cap retention (1.2 million)
Salary cap increase (1.0 million)

Roster Forwards
C #1: Auston Matthews (11.6 million)
C #2: John Tavares (11.0 million)
C #3: David Kampf (1.5 million)
C #4: Addition
RW #1: Mitch Marner (10.9 million)
RW #2: William Nylander (7.0 million)
RW #3: Addition
RW #4: Colin Blackwell (900k)
LW #1: Addition
LW #2: Michael Bunting (900k)
LW #3: Pierre Engvall (1.75 million)
LW #4: Addition
13th Forward: Wayne Simmonds (900k)
14th Forward: Kyle Clifford (763k)

Roster Defense
LD #1: Morgan Rielly (7.5 million)
LD #2: Mark Giordano (1.0 million)
LD #3: TJ Brodie (5.0 million)
RD #1: Addition
RD #2: Timothy Liljegren (3.0 million)
RD #3 Ilya Lyubushkin (2.0 million)
7th Dman: Rasmus Sandin (1.5 million)

Roster Goalies
Jack Campbell (4.0 million)
Addition

Total estimated Cap Hit: 71.2 million
Total remaining Salary Cap: 11.3 million

- IMO, this team needs to add a physical, top 6, power forward to play alongside Matthews and Marner, allowing Bunting to slide down to the 2nd line, where he would be a natural fit. I would expect this forward to cost in the $3.0-4.0 million range.

- IMO, this team requires a long term, steady, shutdown partner for Morgan Rielly. A natural RHD that will allow Brodie to play further down the lineup.

- There are numerous players in the system, on ELCs, that should get an opportunity to cheaply fill out some of the bottom 6 roster spots. The 5 names that come to mind include Nick Robertson, Nick Abruzzese, Joey Anderson, Pontus Holmberg and Alex Steeves. I expect at least 2 of those players will make the opening day roster in 2022.

- I think that Toronto will likely stick with Jack Campbell in goal, unless someone unexpected comes available. That said, it's imperative that Mrazek is replaced, with a cheap, solid backup, who has played meaningful games in the NHL. I'm expecting Campbell to cost a little bit of money, therefore, I'd hope that the backup comes in under $2.0 million.

- If the correct addition is made to the defense core, I really like the group on paper. Not only do I think the mix is right, I love the 7 man depth of that group, allowing some of the guys in the system to keep cooking and Sandin to rotate in regularly, keeping everyone fresh. I'd hope the addition they make costs between $3.0-$4.0 million and is a natural RHD.
Wayne Simmonds’s two reckless penalties in Game 2 cost us dearly so why resign him? We traded away Nazem Kadri for a similar reason. No way Mark Giordano signs for $1 M.

If I'm Dubas, I call Gio and Spezza into my office and offer them the same deal verbally:

Take some time to collect yourselves over the summer. I have 2 reserved spots for you on my roster going into training camp. If at any point you decide you want to go at it again, call me and we will work out a deal instantly. I won't guarantee you 82 games, but you will both be in the playoff roster. We should have won a lot more this year, and we can win with this team going forward. An open invitation to Training Camp regardless of whether you have a contract or not. Think about it, call me and we will get it done. We want both of you back here.

Thank you.

As for the roster:

I do all that I can to move Kerfoot and Mrazek out.

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Mikheyev - Tavares - Nylander
Robertson - Kampf - Kase
Blackwell - Spezza - Simmonds
Clifford - Abruzzese - Engvall

Rielly - Sandin
Muzzin - Brodie
Gio - Lilly
Holl

Kallgren
Campbell

If Campbell would accept $4m and Gio could also come in at under $4m, even with slight pay raises to Lilly and Sandin, it would work. Especially with the cap guy working some magic all year long.

Sandin and Liljigren are looking at marginal raises. Sandin because he missed nearly the whole season and Lilly was relegated to the press box during the playoffs. However, I think they're both really good value.

Trade Muzzin for Sean Walker.

Muzzin will probably only accept a trade if it's to LA. LA needs LHD and has a glut of RHD. Walker/Muzzin both have 2 years remaining on their contracts. Both are probably neutral assets at this point.
