Luke and Nemec play different positions.

Luke was challenging Brendan Smith for a spot.
Nemec was challenging Colin Miller for a spot.

Colin Miller is significantly better than Smith.

Except for the fact that Smith will be the 3rd pairing RD Thursday night and Miller will be a healthy scratch.

I sure hope Miller is better than Smith and that he's just having a tough time adjusting to NJ's system, because he's looked like ass this preseason. Nemec looked much, much better than Miller - but the plan was always for him to go back to the AHL to start this season unless he looked insanely good.

I'm a little surprised Nemec hasn't forced his way on to the team. New Jersey's defence is tough to crack to crack though. He won't play over Hamilton or Marino and he's probably better served on the top pairing in Utica than on the 3rd pairing in NJ.

To me he looked easily NHL ready in camp/preseason. Better than Miller and Smith, and as good if not better than Hughes. I suspect that his non-waiver eligibility and NJD not wanting to lose any of the D depth to waivers, incase of injuries, was a big part why he was put into Utica. Hope the injury is nothing major.

Wonder if he will make his NHL debut before Bichsel. So far Jiricek, Mintyukov, Korchinski all getting opportunities to grow their game in the NHL over Nemec
Columbus, Anaheim, and Chicago are not good hockey teams. NJ has a much tougher roster to crack. There is still plenty for him to learn in the AHL.

You realize CBJ, ANA, CHI are 3 lower end teams that need their real young guys to come in and play right? NJ is a top team that had no roster spots open that need Nemec to be in the AHL so he gets ice time and grow his game.

If Nemec was drafted to one of those teams, he would already probably be a veteran dman with 82+ games played

And Jiricek only got his chance with Werenski’s injury. I’m sure Nemec will get his shot soon too.

where? link?

”Šimon's situation is a big disappointment for me. I know New Jersey plays really well as a team. But to have the second pick in the draft and not give him a chance in a single game, I find it hard to believe. Maybe they didn’t have single injured defensman all season, but that's even harder to believe," HC of team Slovakia Craig Ramsay said in the “Goals from the buffet” podcast produced by šport.sk.

Devils defense actually was really healthy last season. 3 guys played 80+ games with a 4th playing 78.

Devils only played 8 defenseman all season, if you exclude Hughes and his 2 games.

It has nothing to do with Nemec's play, NJ just doesn't want two high-risk rookie defensemen in the lineup at the same time. You can't have 2/3 defense pairings be rookies with a babysitter, not when you're a Cup contender at least.

Add on top of that the fact that NJ's defense is a bit of a clusterf*** right now with Colin Miller injured, Brendan Smith stinking up the joint, plus Siegenthaler, Bahl, and Marino all painfully underperforming. The GM publicly called out the defensive performance yesterday:

I think they want to see the NHL vets figure it out first before they throw a rookie into the whirlpool, that's a recipe for disaster.

Nemec had an awesome camp and then had a semi-serious injury shortly after. It makes sense to let him recover fully in the AHL. On the plus side, it seems like Luke Hughes is starting to earn the trust of Ruff. He has almost certainly been the Devils 2nd best defenseman this season after Hamilton. Once he gets some more reps under his belt and the coaching staff is comfortable taking the leash off him, I think Nemec will come up shortly after.

People get mad when teams rush players and also get mad when teams give players time to develop, people just like to complain about things. How dare a top team not want to bring multiple rookies in at once, especially defensemen. Players wont overripen, when he comes in he'll be plug and play and ready to go, everything will be ok
