Crazy that Nemec and Jiricek are both busts going back to the AHL. Thought they would be all stars by now

I'm assuming this is sarcasm. The only thing keeping Nemec out of the New Jersey lineup at this stage is his surname.

Can see him and Kevin Bahl being D partners very soon and for a very long time.

Julius Honka was never as good as Nemec is now at the same age. New Jersey has a lot of NHL depth on D that they can afford to let him play and marinate more at the AHL level for a season and slide his ELC another year.

I wish he’d slide again but I highly doubt that happens unless he gets injured and just can’t play. While the depth helps to have it’s also not the main reason keeping him out. That reason is Luke. They don’t want to break in 2 rookie Dmen at the same time. I imagine in a few months when they feel more comfortable with Luke we see more Nemec. Based on merit Nemec should be on the team. If Luke was some run of the mill 28 year old who has been in the league for half a decade rather than a 20 year old rookie then Nemec would’ve made the team out of camp.

Kid is going to be really really good. He'll start the season in the AHL so he can get top-line minutes while we see if our depth veterans can hold the line, but I'd be shocked if he isn't in the lineup come the playoffs.

He should ask for a trade. He was clearly much better than Hughes in the training camp and in the pre-season games. It's kind of ridiculous that they gave the guy a spot just because he's the younger brother of the first line center.
Luke is also older and more proven.

Yeah, he didn't have a great preseason by his standards but I don't think Nemec was really that much better. They were both good enough to make the team. But considering how Hughes was our best defenseman in our final playoff game, I think he's earned the benefit of the doubt.

It would also be pretty bad form to push a kid to leave college early on the promise of playing in the NHL only to send him to the AHL. That likely had a lot more sway than his last name.

So who is going to play RD in NJ?

Marino and Hamilton and who else? Kind of surprised he didn't make it.

Miller or Smith. Miller was god awful in preseason but he should be figure things out and be a fine bottom pair guy. Nemec being cut was always the expectation. They weren’t going to break in 2 rookie D together

Hmm. I think its fine to send Nemec to the AHL, he is 19 after all, but surprising its for Colin Miller. My guess is he does really well in the AHL and Miller struggles and they bring up Nemec.

I think that's more or less the plan. Give Nemec top minutes in the AHL for a bit and see if Miller/Smith is able to hold down that last spot. I think by January or so we'll see Nemec back up.

Miller’s generally a perfectly fine bottom pair D. Also again he’s not out of the lineup because there’s 3 studs ahead of him. It isn’t like we kept Severson and Nemec is pushed out because of it. Nemec is out because Hughes is ahead and they weren’t going to break in 2 rookie D at the same time. If Luke was some random 28 year old with 5 years of NHL experience then Nemec is on the team

He’ll be back soon enough. He’s probably already better than both Smith/Miller, but running 2 rookie D-men and a pretty young Bahl to start the season is quite dicey. He’ll be here soon though, wouldn’t be surprised if it’s before the new year.

So they're basically saying they only want to "shelter" one D? I would be surprised if Hughes needs sheltering this year to be honest.

Not necessarily, but they also brought in Miller in part so they didn't have to rush Nemec.

Both Miller and Smith are UFA's after this season, so 3RD is for sure Nemec's spot next season...possibly sooner though, depending on how the vets play.

Nemec is still a teenager for most of this season, so no issue with him marinating in the AHL a bit longer.

I agree, I don't think Hughes will need much sheltering once he settles in, and I expect that to happen pretty quickly.

But I think the team would like to confirm that before having Nemec up, and it's hard for me to complain.

Luke and Nemec play different positions.

Luke was challenging Brendan Smith for a spot.
Nemec was challenging Colin Miller for a spot.

Colin Miller is significantly better than Smith.
