Those guys were all young. Dealing 2nd, 3rd, or 4+ round picks for young talented players is not ill-advised. You need NHLers on your roster. Shero chose his spots and sans Subban and Grabner (as a rental for playoffs), you can’t really knock those deals other than maybe he paid too much for Mueller.
But we’ll agree to disagree. And let the thread get back to Nemec.
The Devils were the 3rd seed in the 2019 draft and coming off a thin draft where the first pick they had after their 1st was the #110.
He then traded away his very high 2019 2nd (#34) and two future 2nd and a future 3rd for two players who were 2 and 3 years away from UFA. It was absurdly bad asset management.
Shero never used any extra 1sts or 2nds in any of his drafts from 2015-19. He didn’t do a functional rebuild and the team is definitely worse because of him.
If he wasn’t gifted two 1OA and his scouts didn’t find Bratt in the 6th round and Sharangovich in the 5th (and Lou did even less) he would be deservedly torched more.
I’ll just point out:
Buffalo drafted 5 time in the 2nd round from 2018-2022 (They also had 9 1st round picks.)
Anaheim drafted 6 times in the 2nd round from 2018-2022. (They also had 7 1st round picks.)
Ottawa drafted 9 times in the 2nd from 2018-2022 (They also had 7 1st round picks.)
Detroit drafted 11 times in the 2nd from 2018-2022 (They also had 7 1st round picks.)
How many times did NJ draft in the 2nd round between 2018-22?
Twice. Yes, they drafted twice in the 2nd round in the last five drafts. And one of those picks was #61.
They also had 8 1st round picks, but as you can see other rebuilding teams managed to get extra 1sts with losing their own 2nds and in most cases getting more 2nds as well.
