How good does an 18 year old need to be in the SHL before 'potential franchise D' is warranted?
Well, Albert Johansson is 20, and is probably more likely to never play in the NHL than be a "Franchise defenseman". And he has a long way to go before he has a meaningful NHL career. So that one is definitely a stretch and will rub people the wrong way.

Edvinsson, sure. I love him. He has sky high potential. Hopefully he reaches it.

It’s a stretch to say that Johansson is a franchise caliber defenseman, but you also went quite a long way to make it sound like Johansson is shit prospect.

I like Johansson a lot as a prospect. I probably like him more than most wings fans. Personally, I had him 4th in our offseason prospect rankings. But we can still have more realistic expectations

I'm not saying he won't make the NHL. I'm saying it's really really really really hard to be a franchise caliber player... especially when at age 20 your fan base ranks you as your teams 7th best prospect.

Franchise caliber D out of Johansson might be a stretch, but he looks like he has top 4 puck moving potential.

And if you look at Detroit’s prospect pool it’s ranked 4th or 5th in the league. Being the 7th ranked guy there is pretty dang good.

Oh I don't think Albert is anywhere near that label. I was only referring to Edvinsson (and what I assumed was a response to Seider+Edvinsson being called potential franchise D). Albert is underrated but not THAT underrated lol.

How good was Dahlin as a 17 yo? Would you consider him a franchise defenseman right now?

I would still say Dahlin is a potential franchise dman, but I guess hes done developing at 21 on a bad Buffalo team so he could never become one

not only that but "potential" also doesn't mean guaranteed

not sure what the point of that post you quoted even is, would anyone even have disagreed that Dahlin was a "potential" franchise Defenseman at 17?

I think our defensive prospects in Sweden have an advantage over other NHL teams. They have former NHL defenceman Niklas Kronvall teaching and mentoring them on a daily basis and working on their weaknesses. That is why I feel they are better prepared for the NHL than other team's prospects and get this breakthrough performances on their D+1 year. A common theme seems to be is that our prospects are becoming more complete players which kind of mirrors the kind of player Kronvall used to be when he was with the Redwings. Having so many Swedish draft picks as prospects in our organization makes it easy for Kronvall to personally guide them in their career.

I came here to read about Edvinsson but all I'm seeing lately is discussions on Dahlin and Johansson. Hopefully, I can find a Johansson or Dahlin thread to find out more info on Edvinsson.

I recommend the Swedish Prospect Hockey thread in the Detroit Redwings forum if you want up to date discussion on Edvinsson and other Redwings Swedish prospects.

Edvinsson got really soft hands for such a big defenceman as demonstrated in this play last year. He has admitted that he’s spent a lot of time developing his hands over the last four seasons because he wanted to build a game that defies expectations for a defender of his size.

However he still needs to work on his shot which he himself admitted is the weakest part of his offensive skillset.

On that twitter page he is listed as 6'4" last year. He must have grown a bit since then since he is listed as 6'5" in most sites nowadays.

Different meanings of "franchise D" I guess. All the power to you all if you think you have 3 of those when there are barely 10-15 franchise D in the whole NHL.
In for a rude awakening with such expectations
There’s one guy who thinks Albert is one. Two of the highest rated prospects in hockey clearly have this potential.

What is the knock on this kid? The whole package seems to be there.
He doesn't really have glaring weaknesses when I watch him. He has all the tools in the world, his biggest weakness is probably knowing when to use them and when to make the smart boring play. But its only a matter of time before he figures it out.
