Was kind of dominant today. Biggest weakness I can see is the shot, mainly the accuracy and how often it goes wide or gets blocked. He's shooting a ton but not getting much out of it. If that improves the numbers could really explode (not that 2 assists in 3 games is bad).

I would love for him to learn Lidstrom's old trick of purposefully shooting wide for deflections/bounces off the backboard in front of the net.

I just read that Edvinsson trains in mixed martial arts. That will help him a lot when challenged in the NHL in a few years. We don't want our potential blue chip top pairing defenceman to play enforcer too much but mentally it will help him overcome the physical challenges he will encounter in the league.

It is nice of a Swedish legend like Hakan Loob to compare Simon Edvinsson to Detroit Redwings legend Nicklas Lidstrom though in the way he glides smoothly across the ice as well as his heads up play.

Well I hope he doesn't kick someone in the face.:-)

I'm getting the feeling that the Wings have two potential franchise defensemen on their hands.

You might want to include Albert Johansson as a potential blue chip defenceman for the Redwings as well particularly when Redwings legend Niklas Lidstrom singles him out as the Swedish player with the biggest potential among the Redwings draft picks to make it to the NHL.

Having 3 potential franchise defenceman as prospects is a luxury very few teams in the NHL possess.

No disrespect but Johansson is simply not a blue chip prospect nor is that Lidstrom interview particularly relevant to Edvinsson (as much as I personally enjoy it).

Even though he wasn't a top ten NHL draft pick, Johansson is thought of very highly in Sweden as one of the best young defenceman in the SHL along with Edvinsson. It is relevant because both young defenceman Edvinsson and Johansson might be playing alongside each other in North America potentially as early as next year.

Interestingly Johansson got the most votes in a Redwings poll thread between the 2 on which defenceman gets the most points in the SHL this season.

Edvinsson vs Johansson

Edvinsson vs Johansson

as someone that voted for Johansson in that poll we're talking about a guy in his D+3 that was already in the top 20 in the SHL in Defenseman scoring last year vs someone in his D+1, that's some pretty important context

That was my reasoning too for why I voted for Johnsson this season instead of Edvinsson. However Edvinsson's performance on his draft year is definitely more impressive. I still hope to see them both in Redwings training camp next year.

The word franchise defenseman is being thrown vert lightly in this thread. Think how many franchise defenseman are in the NHL right now

should be in the NHL forsure next season??

It feels like a distinct possibility after two games watching the Red Wings LD options so far this year. There are a lot of bodies on NHL watch for the Wings next year depending on how their season goes. Johansson will be 21 and coming over from Sweden, Edvinsson looks he's following Raymond's footsteps in being the next Frolunda product that is a D+1 and jump caliber prospect, McIsaac will hopefully have a healthy season under his belt and will be 22 headed into next year, I hate to layer on expectations but Sebrango will be two AHL seasons deep after this year. Naturally we will see most of those guys probably end up in Grand Rapids, and who knows what happens with other depth prospects like Eemil Viro, William Wallinder, Shai Buium, Antti Tuomisto all playing for various European or NCAA teams.

I think Edvinsson is probably option 1A and Johansson is 1B right now, but with as terrible as the LD looks, it could be both of them + a free agent signing (or Leddy extension)
