Seider would have made the Redwings last year if it weren't for the SHL requiring a full season commitment in order to add him to the roster. Considering our lack of depth on defence, he would have made the top 4 defenceman last year as well.

We will have 4 unrestricted free agents next year on defence. Even if Yzerman signs 3 free agents(either from the current roster or outside) to replace them, I think he would leave at least one slot open up for grabs for one of our prospects.

Recently Kronwall mentioned they look at several criteria before considering if a prospect is ready for callup to the Redwings. One is that he dominates the level he is in that is just below the NHL and Edvinsson seems to be doing exactly just that at the SHL.

Another is that they do well on the national teams of their respective countries either at the World Championships or the Olympics and that still has to be decided for Edvinsson since he has only recently made an impact for the top tier SHL this year and hasn't had a chance to prove himself yet at the international tournament men's level.

There have been calls in the SHL media to have Edvinsson included in the Olympics roster but despite his dominance in the SHL it is still going to be a tall order since he will be competing with proven NHL defenceman for a slot on the Olympic team.

The Redwings have the advantage of having Kronvall and Zetterberg serving as advisers to the Olympics coaching staff which is headed by former Redwings forward Johan Garpenlöv as head coach. I am sure they will take into consideration of the calls to add Edvinsson to the Olympic roster in February if he continues to dominate the SHL since they try to add impact players from the SHL as well to round out the Olympic rosters as they have done in the past. If he does make it there or at the 2022 Hockey World Championships, he will have a chance to prove if he can excel at that level which will go a long way to earning a call up to the Redwings training camp.

I hope that Edvinsson will have the same impact if he makes the Redwings next year. A pair of #1 defenceman on the same team would be difficult to beat.
This is what I was responding to. I get that everyone is excited about Edvinsson but none of what you wrote really supports the argument that he will be as impactful as Seider next year. I never denied he may make the Red Wings. But Rookie D rarely look as good as Seider does now.

Redwings prospects have the advantage of having Kronwall guiding their development. It is one of the reasons our Swedish prospects have been improving so much this season compared to other prospects in other organizations.

Here is a comment on the work he does with our prospects translated from Swedish:

"But Niklas Kronwall, the legendary Detroit defender, who works a lot with the team’s prospects on Swedish soil, of course takes care when he is able to. Talks, checks with the situations, gives feedback, looks at details. In addition to all the phone calls with accompanying video reviews, of course."

He describes Edvinsson as a quick learner. “Simon seems to be the kind of guy that…When he gets something explained to him, then he can apply it relatively quickly.”

“Quite impressive considering his young age, that he looks like he does. He’s got a certain charisma, a certain weight to his game, quite unusual,” Kronwall pointed out.

“It’s early in the season, you shouldn’t pull too big gears, but he’s understandably looked very impressive,” Kronwall said.

Wrong thread bud. Take it somewhere else.

Lol I'm a Wings fan too. But do you really think that Kronwall is some magic weapon that Detroit has and other teams are left in the dust developing prospects?

”I mean, we needed a defenseman and his highlights look solid bit that’s way too early to to pick Marty Snyder from Germany ”.

Quote from draft day.
I'll be the first to eat a heaping pile of crow. My take was asking the lines of:
"Why would we use 6th OA on a player projected to go in the early 20's with questionable offensive upside and very little exposure when we can take someone like Zegras at 6, be really confident he'll be great and get Seider if he's around later"

Man oh man am I happy with Seider now. As time goes by I believe more and more that he's not going to be just a top pairing defenseman but a truly elite player for a very long time.

There is many reasons Redwings U21 prospects are the best in the SHL and have improved so much from last year and having Kronwall guiding their development in such a direct fashion is just one of them.

When asked for example why he has improved so much this year, Edvinsson cites Kronwall as one of those reasons.

I am sure other NHL teams are putting tabs on their prospects in the SHL thru their scouts there and thru their development staff based in NA just like development director Shawn Horcoff does for the Redwings from the US but let me know of an NHL team that has hired one of their retired all star defenceman(like the Redwings has done with Kronwall) personally guiding and training those prospects not only thru video feedback and phone calls but also directly first hand in extra training sessions after practice.

If Seider keeps practicing his slapper and can add some velocity and better placement, he might be the closest thing we'll see to a Chris Pronger clone these days.

Maybe a Larry Robinson clone instead. Pronged was a less likeable version of Robinson. Mo is super charismatic.

He had a pretty bad game last night but overall is still doing really, really well.

I wish he would be more physical, idk if they are coaching him out of it or what
I think he still leads Detroit's defense in hits. For a 20 year old rookie he's physical enough.
By the time he's 25 he probably dominates in the physical play, but it just isn't gonna happen as a 20 year old.

He had a couple bad turnovers last night but overall thought he was still pretty good. Made several nice defensive plays and had some nice rushes. Dunno why they're pairing him with dekeyser tho, guy is such a boat anchor

His mistakes seem to be based on a little bit of overconfidence though - cute passes, hanging onto the puck too long. I think that will sort itself out soon enough. My only long term concern with him is footspeed.

I expect his physicality to increase as he gets a better understanding of timing & speed at the NHL level. It's very easy to put yourself in a bad position to make a hit. Kronwall's ability to make huge hits and rarely if ever put himself in a bad position in terms of getting beat defensively is one of the reasons he was so feared/ effective.

I liked Seider a lot more with Leddy than with DDK. He has been great, but he is also still a rookie. Leddy was a much more supportive partner and better at making smooth outlet passes. Seider/DDK tends to get hemmed into their zone more. He has also been a little cutesy with the puck lately.

So I wouldn't see the MTL or CLB games were great games by him, but he is still having a great season. I hope he gets re-paired with Leddy soon. Wings could really use another LD to pair with Hronek and bump DDK to the 3rd pair or even out of the lineup. He just isn't a very effective dman anymore.

He's a big guy who can move the puck well so he doesn't necessarily need to be the fastest. Pair him with someone mobile (like Edvinsson) and boom, nothing to worry about.
